I keep forgetting to upload this, so I'll cheat and link to her upload - look at the gorgeous gorgeous thing that [livejournal.com profile] starbirdside drew for me!

Lovely drawing of Abe and Nuala. ♥ Yes, I'm shameless when it comes to my favorite pairings.

And she's still taking commissions, too. ♥

Can you explain your attraction to this pairing to me? I'm really curious!

It's a bit odd, I know. :)

I think the appeal comes down to a lot of mixed factors. I tend to like pairings where the people involved are very different, or from different backgrounds, and look at the world in totally different ways. In the context of the comics/movie, Abe is very much the rational science guy (to the extent that anybody can be in this universe). I'm already given to liking that type - skinny geek boys are so my type. ;) For me, there's always been something terribly appealing about Abe's personality, particularly as it's played in the movies - he's endearingly frank, a bit of a distracted intellectual, earnest, and a bit socially clueless. I keep picturing Odo from DS9 in my head as I'm trying to explain this - there's the same kind of man-on-the-outside thing going, and that always gets my sympathy going.

As for Nuala, I've always felt a little guilty being as drawn to her as I am. I usually pride myself on liking independent women who can handle themselves... and Nuala's none of that, poor thing. As much as I love Guillermo Del Toro's movies, he's a bit out to lunch when it comes to writing female characters with actual agency. More than anything I feel like Nuala has potential, and there's something in the fairy-tale set-up of her story that I do still unconsciously find very compelling. I read too much mythology and fairy tales not to be intrigued by those themes when they show up in modern media, even if the feminist in me gets angry about them. And there are shining moments of possibility for her character, I think - she's willing to stand up to her brother and do whatever she can to prevent him getting the power to control the golden army, even though she's very clearly not really a match for him. She looks on the Bureau team as needing her help, not the other way around. And the first time she meets Abe, she pulls a knife on him because she thinks he's working for her brother. I do like a fairy-tale princess with a bit of spunk. ;) At the same time, I'm about the least-tough person I know, so I identify with a character who can't really fight when it comes down to it, even if she wants to.

Together... they're just so sweet that I think it would make me ill if I weren't so fond of both of them individually. They're both so socially awkward that a relationship with someone more forward would be almost appalling in its power differential, while together they seem to balance nicely (particularly important given the not-so-subtle indications of some degree of abuse in Nuala's background).

And a big part of it is that I've been on-and-off writing a huge fic about them that started off as a quick little mythology homage and ended up diverting into an effort to deal with some of the gender stuff I see in the series. I may or may not be doing it well, but it means the characters have taken on a life of their own in my head, and I've grown more and more attached to them. And of course they're both exceptionally pretty, IMHO. ;)

Apologies if this is incoherent in any way - I'm in a rush to finish before I end my lunch break, so I haven't had a chance to go back over things. I hope at least some of it makes sense. Sorry for any tl;dr, as well.
