Snagged from a bunch of folks:

1. How did you name your pets?
Theoden was named "Jupiter" when I got him from the animal shelter, and as appropriate as that was for a big, rather round, buff-colored boy, it didn't shorten well for calling. At the time Lord of the Rings was my most overwhelming fandom, and particularly the Rohirrim, but "Eomer" didn't work... which made me think of his resemblance to Bernard Hill as Theoden, and that stuck.

Our other cat, originally The Boy's, is Random. Because his acquisition of The Boy was very random. :)

2. Poirot or Miss Marple?
Neither, really, but I've probably seen more Poirot.

3. Do you have a FB account too?
Yeah, but I tend to avoid it mostly.

4. Books - hardcover or paperback
I read mostly on my Kindle and from the library, nowadays, but am perfectly happy with whatever. Slightly prefer paperbacks for being less heavy and also generally cheaper.

5. Mobile: Windows, Android or Apple?
I didn't get a phone at all until very late, and when I upgraded to a smartphone I was very happy with my Palm Pre. Currently have a very old iPhone, but planning to switch to Android whenever I finally convince myself to upgrade.

Ganked from [personal profile] nostalgia: A writing questions meme!

1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?
2: What scene did you first put down?
3: What's your favorite line of narration?
4: What's your favorite line of dialogue?
5: What part was hardest to write?
6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?
7: Where did the title come from?
8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?
11: What do you like best about this fic?
12: What do you like least about this fic?
13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn't listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?
14: Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?
15: What did you learn from writing this fic?

My fic is all here, and I would love a few questions to distract me from the frustrating formatting issues in this edit I'm working on!

30 days of fanfic meme, days 5-7. Yeah, I'm cheating a bit. I'm so far behind that if I don't, I'll never catch up.

5 –If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?

Ohyes. Yes, I definitely have. The most egregious was Dukhat (B5), who not only took over my brain for a Day of the Dead alternate scene, but also insisted that he wanted to have a chat with Sheridan, forcing me to write Where No Shadows Fall. I can't complain - the latter is still one of my favorite fics that I've written. It's probably not among my best technical pieces, but I had a lot of fun with it, and I still enjoy some of the ideas that came up. In short, if a character insists on pushing themselves into a fic, I let them. The results are always more interesting than whatever I had planned, anyway, and I enjoy letting the characters do whatever they want.

6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?

I probably have a preference for writing female characters, judging by my track record, but I enjoy both. I pick characters based on whether I like them and how much they interest me, not based on gender.

7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?

I assume this means the process of writing my own fic, not reading someone else's (in which case the answer would still be "yes, definitely," but for a different reason). It's definitely happened a few times - I think the process of writing a character is always going to change how one views that character. They become a person. Layers show up that you weren't expecting, you think about them in a different way. That definitely happened to me with... oh, Narcissa Black, John Sheridan, Leoben Conoy. Probably a few others I've forgotten, as well. I get very attached to characters I write, even the nasty ones.

Best wishes to everybody on the east coast who's prepping for Hurricane Irene! Take care!

I haven't been posting, so here's an awesome meme that everybody around me seems to be doing:

If I made Cinderella, the audience would immediately be looking for a body in the coach. —Alfred Hitchcock

When I write a story, what do readers immediately look for?
rivendellrose: (Default)
4 – Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?

Hahaha, lots.

The characters who 'live in my head.' )

It didn't take me long to get behind in the fanfic meme, but I'm picking it right back up and making up for a bit of lost time!

2 – Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.

3 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?

Oh boy.  Okay, in my world, fandoms never really die - things I don't write for anymore are marked as "on hiatus," because I never really know whether or not I'll come back to them at some point, if someone requests something or if I come up with a new idea or decide to finish something that got dropped partway through.  If I mark something as "still writing," it's because I either have something I'm currently working on, or I'm actively seeking and looking forward to new ideas in that fandom. A Lot of Fandoms )

Short version: Still unpacking and cleaning old place, haven't seen new Doctor Who yet (no spoilers!), loving the hell out of Portal 2 (no spoilers here, either!♥), enjoyed wonderfully sunny beautiful warm weather in Seattle today, characters keeping me up late trying to get through angsty scene to hopefully a moderately happy conclusion.

And because I am clearly not thinking clearly at the moment - how about a meme gacked from [ profile] paranoidangel42 and [ profile] ariastar?

Give me a character and I will tell you:

* How I FEEEEEL about this character
* All the people I ship romantically with this character
* My non-romantic OTP for this character
* My unpopular opinion about this character
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

The Five Questions Meme

How this meme works:
1 - Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 - I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3 - You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 - You'll include this explanation.
5 - You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

Anyone want questions?

My answers to her questions:

I natter, so answers are under the cut. )

Hard at work with the writing and plotting practice (...not right now, as I am at work, but in general!), so the following meme gacked from [ profile] velvet_midnight seemed apt:

The first ten people to comment in this post get to request that I write a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level.

That should be a good warm-up exercise for my writing for the next few days, if people request things. ♥

[ profile] ogew points out that I didn't say anything about fandom restrictions - I would say that anything I've written before is up for grabs, and if you're thinking of a fandom you don't see listed on that page, just ask me - if I know it well enough, I'll probably be willing to give it a go, but there are a lot of things out there that I just don't know a darned thing about.

Snagging from [ profile] icepixie because... well, see icon. Yrgh.

I think it would be fun to talk about stories, but the usual memes are like, "What happens next?" "Tell me about Character A?" What isn't so much talking about stories as it is writing more of a story. But you know how sometimes you read something and you're like, "I got ___ out of this story, I wonder if that right?" or "What on earth was ____ supposed to be?" and it's too awkward to ask the author? Now you could totally ask!

I've heard people say that writing is hard because you have to make decisions, but we never really talk about the decisions we make with stories or why we make them. We talk about plot bunnies, but not about how we actually turn them into a story.

And it seems like a lot more fun to do that than to do working.

So, if you wanted, ask me questions!

What were you trying to do [here]? Why did you decide to ____? This is what I thought about xyz, is that what you were going for? What made you write ____? And so on.

I'm totally ass at coming up with good questions on this kind of thing, so I totally understand if there's nothing people are interested in, but I enjoy the hell out of them anyway.

I'm bored. So have a meme, gacked from [ profile] akashasheiress:

The problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away.

Old hat, but hey - if you have any thing you want to know (or, you know, just want to entertain me on this very boring Tuesday) ask away! ♥

I really need to get back into the habit of saving my writing to Google docs so I have something to work on during lunch if the internet fails to entertain...

For no real reason other than curiosity's sake and because I kept hearing about it, I've joined Formspring. If by some random chance you have questions for me, feel free to ask. ♥

I am desperately attempting to write fic and not necessarily succeeding, so... meme! Gacked from [ profile] velvet_midnight. ♥

Give me a pairing I know and a word/color/lyric/location/kink or cliche and I will write you at least 100 words of smut. You heard me.

Short prompts are the kind I can usually do efficiently. :D

Food meme from [ profile] nekokoban!

1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you've eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Optional extra: Post a comment here at linking to your results.
5) (added on) italicize foods you can't remember if you've had or not, but it seems like you
should have, or you're pretty sure you have, but can't remember when.
6) underline foods you would eat but haven't had the opportunity to.
