Just a quick update, as my contacts are currently attempting to fall out of my eyes and I have to get up early tomorrow morning to go to the Grand Canyon (!!!), but the trip's been wonderful so far. We got all The Boy's old stuff sorted and the stuff he wanted to keep packed and shipped up to us back in Seattle, helped his mom with some stuff, drove around and saw a lot of beautiful scenery. Last night after all that was done we went out to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which was exceptionally pretty and well-directed but with which I took a few serious issues, which I'll take up in a moment. And then we drove out to (somewhere in the middle of nowhere) to do some stargazing, which was fantastic, particularly because we had a bit of a meteor shower and we saw a bunch of big, beautiful bats, one of whom decided that he wanted to come up barely a foot away from my head. I admit, though I adore bats, I did find that slightly unnerving, because in my experience wild animals are not supposed to behave as if they might land on your head. But I was completely enchanted anyway, particularly when said bat did not actually land on me, and I do admit that as soon as I'd recovered from the shock I sort of wished another would show up and come as close again, so I could appreciate it, but alas, such was not to be.

Today, I got to visit with the lovely [livejournal.com profile] theladyfeylene, who I haven't seen in way too long, and we spent a good few hours doing some wonderful catching up before we (the Boy and I) had to run off and finish with packing and sorting and shipping, and then return to the B&B for re-application of sunscreen and water before running off to a family picnic up at Granite Falls (or some place-name very like that). Met the aunts and uncles, all of whom were lovely and fun, and also a crazy woman who wanted to tell us all about the time someone stole her house from her and so on and so forth ad infinitum, to the point that the Boy and I escaped under the pretext of a bit of a walk, and got to see a hilarious little squirrel who ran like a bunny-rabbit. We also saw some very scary-looking hornets and wasps (I survived without being stung, so I count that as a win), and I discovered that there is mistletoe on the trees down here. I had no idea that it grew in the south, to the point that I spent several minutes craning my neck and staring at it before admitting "that looks like mistletoe up there," probably convincing his adorable aunt that I was some kind of complete idiot who thought mistletoe only came in plastic, when in actuality it was just that I was flabbergasted to see it in the freaking southwest. I don't even think we have it in Washington, so I'm honestly not sure I was aware it grew in America. Anyway, I appear to have made a good impression, and thought his aunts and uncles were all adorable, so it's overall been a good run.

Tomorrow, Grand Canyon, with possibility of Jerome and Sedona on the way. The B&B is lovely, and there is liquor in all the stores here, which is novel and bizarre to me, coming from a state where the strongest thing allowed to be sold in grocery stores is wine coolers. Have not managed to see any javilina (sp?), but have seen a kangaroo rat, several golden eagles, and a skunk. Am hoping tomorrow will include further exciting wildlife. Also hoping to actually remember to use my camera, as I have a nasty knack for forgetting its existence in the excitement of everything I'm seeing and doing. Further, will hopefully go stargazing again tomorrow night - if I come home smuggling a fruit-bat, do you suppose airport security would notice?*

*I ask in part because I inadvertently smuggled a jar of face cream onto the flight with me on the way here. We'd just got through security (which is much more lax than they used to be, although I was upset to notice that they patted down a very nice-looking older Indian lady in front of me and waved me and the Boy both through without a second look, so BAD on them), when I went to put my tickets back in my purse, as we had about an hour and a half before our flight would board... and was horrified to see the jar nestled in with all my other stuff. We are still not supposed to have liquids/creams in carry-on, but I apparently got confused and packed it there (in addition to the two jars (yes, I'm crazy - one of them is a different kind) in our check baggage). I was convinced one of the security guards would come tearing after me, convinced I was going to blow up the plane with a jar of Burt's Bees daily moisture cream, but no such disaster befell us, and I was allowed to travel comfortably with the dangerous, illegal substance. Almost makes me want to push my luck and try to bring aboard hand lotion on the way home... almost, but not quite. I do, after all, quite like the idea of getting home on the correct flight, without undue harassment or sighs of long-suffering exhaustion from security guards as they explain to me, poor benighted moron who has not traveled major airlines since 9/11, that we are not allowed the simple pleasures of non-dry skin on planes anymore.

Anyway, the stuff I'm using right now is hemp hand cream from The Body Shop, and I'm a bit afraid someone might misunderstand that. :P

Quick, tired and SPOILERY review (mostly random thoughts and fussing) of 'The Half-Blood Prince' )

Okay, so I lied about the "quick" part. Going to bed now.

Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] nekokoban because I'm sleepy and braindead. Or something. :P

Six Pairings I Like:

1. Doctor/Tardis (Doctor Who, and stop looking at me like I'm crazy...)
2. Romana/Doctor (Doctor Who)
3. Sarah/Harry (Doctor Who... can you guess my newest fandom?)
4. Mal/Inara (Firefly!)
5. Snape/Lupin (Harry Potter... though I haven't written it in ages)
6. Giles/Jenny (Buffy, and yes, I know I'm living in the past...)

Three Ships I've Abandoned:
(For the sake of expedience, we'll just go with "pairings from fandoms I no longer actively read and/or write in," 'cause honestly, I'm incapable of actually giving up on pairings. And fandoms, for that matter... XD)

7. Garak/Bashir (DS9)
8. Scully/Mulder (X-Files)
9. Lucius/Narcissa (Harry Potter)

Three Ships I've Never Liked:

10. Giles/Buffy (Buffy, obviously, and eew)
11. Sirius/Snape (HP
12. Harry/anybody (HP)

Two Ships That Have Piqued My Interest:

13. Master/Doctor (really, I think of this as Master-->Doctor, but either way)
14. ...umm.... okay, I'll admit a mild fascination with Romana/Sarah (Doctor Who).

Questions! )
rivendellrose: (seeress)
I know I promised a while ago that I'd written my last in the little first-war collection of fics, at least until the last book comes out... but I apparently I lied. Turns out there was one last bit that demanded writing. Fortunately it came to me just in time for me to finish it before the last book comes out.

Title: The Coming Storm
Fandom: HP
Characters: Narcissa, Snape, Lupin
Timeline: Set during the first war, somewhere between set in this era, and presuming their backstory. I'll try to edit this to include the links soon, but they're not strictly necessary.
Notes: Unbeta'd and written a bit quickly due to time constraints - if you find any errors, please do let me know!
Summary: Narcissa and Remus find a few things in common, and two school friends share a tense understanding.
Rating: P-G

I frigging hate how un-user-friendly the interface at The Leaky Cauldron is, but they're the only place I've seen these so far. [livejournal.com profile] zinjadu and other interested parties, here's our first look at Bellatrix Lestrange! The first two are uber-fuzzy and poor quality, and the second has a weird faux-lightning flare over it... but it's not bad! Also, the teaser trailer should be available on the Happy Feet website (yeah... I know) as of Monday and is already available on YouTube, at least til they find it and remove it for copyright infringement.

...Also, why did you tell me about this? Even if it sucks, I'm almost required by pure nature of self to get hooked on it. I mean... Noah Wyle. As a "meek librarian." Who apparently has to go tromping off after some kind of mystical artifact that's stolen from his library. Update: Ah, excuse me, that's the old one. Apparently the new one (yet to come out) is here.

Why can't I come up with this shit? I mean... It's like, every fantasy I've ever conceived of stuffed into a single TV show. Clearly, my ability to actually come up with the ideas that I would want to read/watch is severely limited! Granted, I think Adrien Brody would've been a better casting choice... or, you know, Peter Wingfield, but I guess he's busy with some other thing in England? Anyway, Noah Wyle's still pretty damned hot. It occurs to me that this is a Bad Thing, as it means that my particular obsession with geeky guys is turning into somewhat of a mainstream deal, and thus I am in no way alone in my search for a hot but completely dorky intellectual academic type guy. Alas. Why could I not have been born when this was less cool? I won't have a chance if geek becomes the new hot, there'll be too much competition!

Why are there no glasses in the one picture I see? Also, where is the tweed? I must be the only person on earth with a tweed fetish, I swear... And surely there will be tea? Or at least beer? Sweaters? Oh god, I'm hopeless.

Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] razycrandomgirl: the 12 characters meme. I love this game!

Choose twelve characters from your fandoms, then answer the questions under the link. Do not look at the questions beforehand.

1. Mal (Firefly)
2. Inara (Firefly)
3. Ivanova (Babylon 5)
4. Garak (DS9)
5. Mulder (X-Files)
6. Remus (HP)
7. Zoe (Firefly)
8. Methos (Highlander)
9. Snape (HP)
10. Londo (Babylon 5, for no real reason)
11. Bashir (DS9)
12. Elphaba (Wicked)

And the Questions! )
rivendellrose: (Default)
One of my very old plotbunnies got a bit of a second wind tonight, and while chasing down a few details for it (yes, I fell victim to my research illness again), I ran across a collection of JKR's quotes about Snape. Most of my HP friends will already know that I have a deep love for Snape, and a great distaste for the way Rowling talks about him in her interviews, but I feel the need to explain myself somewhat, as we near the end of the series.

It's not that I think he's a good person. It's that I empathize with the very fact that he's a horrible person. )
rivendellrose: (love)
...Or at least six seven of them. :D

Okay, so most of them are a bit more than just the kiss. What can I say - I love dialogue, and some of these characters are hard to shut up. ♥ I'm not sure how I ended up with a semi-theme of "surprise kisses," but there's definitely a little bit of a trend running through these. [livejournal.com profile] nekokoban is at fault for one, because I needed a little bit of prompting, but beyond that... I guess it was just something on my mind.

Kiss #1: One Night in the Elysian Fields Guest House - from Tanya Huff's 'Summon the Keeper,'Claire and Dean )

Kiss #2: Nearly Sweet Sixteen - Snape and Narcissa )

Kiss #3: Night of Victory - Snape and Lupin )

Kiss #4: Portrait With a Cup of Tea - Garak and Bashir )

Kiss #5: The Art of Love and War Wash and Zoe )

Kiss #6: Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog Lily and James )

Added 'Bonus' fic! When I put this entry in my "fic" category under my memories, I realized that this was my 70th entry in that category. Since I was already thinking that seven is a much better number than six, here's one more kiss to fill out the entry.

Kiss #7: Uninvited - Mal and Inara )

Figures that one of the few things I still care about in the Harry Potter universe would turn up still more mysteries. The Black family tree!!! Here's the link, but the pertinent quotes are below.

"There are several familiar names visible, including Callidora who married a Harfang Longbottom. Her sister Charis who married Caspar Crouch. Intriguingly there is a Dorea (1920-1977) who married Charles Potter and had one child, a son. The time frame seems to be consistent with them being James' parents."

He also says there is another listing of a name that is very intriguing to Potter fans "Arcturus Black (1884-1959)." The article goes on to mention these items will be on display Monday, February 20th at 24 Maddox Street London W1 [...]This paper from Jo , along with others, will then be auctioned off the next day."

Conclusions from this:

1. Narcissa is no longer the only known Black with a name not derived from a star or constellation. Belvina? Dorea? Callidora? Elladora? (Incidentally, what was the name of Samantha Stevens' mother in "Bewitched"? I want to say it was close to that...) No more doubt that the family is full of sadists, considering those names...

2. Where the hell are the men of the Black family? I mean... somebody must be carrying on the name, right? But I see no men other than Phineus and Arcturus... WTF? And of course it would appear that the lines leading to Sirius and Regulus, and Bellatrix, Andie, and Narcissa are the ones that are covered. *Growls*

3. Harry is either blind or illiterate. Seriously, how else could he have missed seeing "POTTER" on the tapestry???

4. There are a hell of a lot more burned-out folks than I expected, considering the two we see can't possibly be the ones we know from the books. Huh.

Heh. I forgot about this... I must've written it just after I read HBP, but it never quiiiite got finished until just now. Lucky thing I checked it before deleting the document in my by file-cleaning spree I've been on. *g*

Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Snape/Lupin
Title: "Farewell"
Warnings: HBP spoilers
Rating: Probably a PG-13, just for good measure.
Notes: This is probably the last (or 2nd-to-last, depending on how 7 goes...) in the series that began with Pre-Dawn Etude, A Drop of Oil, and The Sun in Your Eyes (and included the fluffy little interlude Tin Stars, as a sort of Christmas special), which supposes that Remus and Severus were briefly a couple just before and during the First War. This installment is set, obviously, in the 'contemporary' era of canon.
Dedication: As always with Snape/Lupin fics in this series, this one's for [livejournal.com profile] theladyfeylene, because it was her Snape that got me started on this whole crazy endeavor.

You're a Slytherclaw!: By nature you are rational
and a realist. Some people may call you cynical
and elitist but this doesn't matter to you. You
don't depend on other people's opinions to

generally cautious and prefer to weigh the
consequences before you act. In conflicts you
prefer to remain neutral and aloof. You value
intelligence and you are a natural diplomat,
you can convince people to do what you want
them to do. Your weakness is that you sometimes
think more with your head than with your heart
and it leads to isolation. With the
intelligence of a Ravenclaw and the subtlety of
a Slytherin you will be sure to achieve all
your goals!

The last question really tore me. Remus... or Snape.... or maybe Hermione?

And then [livejournal.com profile] zinjadu told me which to answer, and, like the uke I am, I rolled over and went with her decision.

Last night, I finally saw Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

I enjoyed it, for the most part, although my desire to duct-tape Emma Watson's mouth shut in order to prevent further abuse to the fine art of acting has increased about ten-fold. That girl is bad. Melodrama liek whoa. Did the director tell her to be on PMS the whole movie? That's my only potential explanation.

The rest of the review: Ralph-demort, Weasleys, pill-popping Ddore, champions, and Madame Maxine's future off-Broadway career, etc. )

First, write down the names of 12 characters. Then read and answer the questions. You can't look at the questions (or click on the cut) until you write down the 12 characters you are going to use.

1. Remus Lupin
2. Simon Tam
3. Malcolm Reynolds
4. River Tam
5. Methos
6. Garak
7. Julian Bashir
8. Aragorn
9. Eomer
10. Miss Clara ;)
11. Severus Snape
12. Austin from Summon the Keeper

And the Questions: )
rivendellrose: (reading)
rosalindjen: Harry's abdomen is a scary place.
Zinjadu2: ... why?
rosalindjen: when he sees Remus in the pensieve in OotP: "Harry's stomach gave another pleasurable squirm"
Zinjadu2: ... does he have a beast in his chest?
rosalindjen: that too.
Zinjadu2: ... o_O
Zinjadu2: what the fuck all does Harry have for innards?
rosalindjen: *reconsiders her opinion that Harry is asexual*
Zinjadu2: no, really, what's he got in there?
rosalindjen: aliens.
Zinjadu2: oh noes!
rosalindjen: he has gay aliens in his stomach.
rosalindjen: and straight aliens, too.
Zinjadu2: *blinks* wow.
Zinjadu2: poor Harry.
rosalindjen: I know. it's impressive.
rosalindjen: poor guy must have horrible gas.
Zinjadu2: you should post this converstion, you know

Alrighty - I just turned in my commentary for my anthro class, and my archaeology midterm this morning went pretty well, so I get to write more drabbles before getting back to work!

For [livejournal.com profile] narsilion, who requested "fun and fluffy" Amy and Methos romance. This one's a double, because... well, I liked it a lot, and Methos won't shut up. :D

Tell Me All Your Secrets )

And for [livejournal.com profile] coramegan, who requested Cho and Luna coming to an understanding:

For [livejournal.com profile] the_rocklobster, who requested something melancholy and shippy with Harry and Luna. In my own defense, I don't write either of those characters much... but I did what I could!

...And I have no idea where the title came from, either.

Radishes in Love )

Now that I'm getting used to it, I'm really starting to like drabbles as a format for writing. It's amusing, to see how much I can get across in 100 words. *Eyes the rest of f-list* I promise I won't make you all put up the meme yourselves - I just want more prompts!

Dear friends-list:

Please stop it with the "DO NOT READ" meme. If I see something labelled "Do Not Read" I will, miraculously, not read. I will also assume you are wangsting and have forgotten how to use the "private" or "custom-friends-locked" functions. If the point is to find the friends who will read it.... I'm not one of them. Plus, it makes me go "What the fuck is up with people today?" until I figure out that it's a meme.

Dear world:

Please give me my left ear back. I've very tired of it being plugged all the time.

Kari and I spent waaaaaaaaaay too much time talking about random shit last night. It was fun. Topics of conversation (as I remember) included politics, religion, Highlander and a very bored Methos attempting to freak out Richie by coming on to him, our characters at IB, and how we'd like to someday play late-teenaged Lucius, Bellatrix, and Rodolphus as the Anti-Trio. And, somewhere in there, how we plan on writing an essay on why het is a Good Thing sometimes, and why some canon het pairings just shouldn't be fucked with.

I solemnly swear that I will never again return a set of DVDs in which I have avid interest (particularly a set that cost me $11.something to rent from Scarecrow) without fucking double- and triple-checking to make sure that I have seen every second of potentially important extra footage on the damned disks. If my computer decides that she hates the interviews, I will move upstairs and muck my way through using the PS2 controller to navigate. If that fails, I will sit there patiently until one of my housemates comes home, and then beg them to do it for me.

THIS is why. Because damn it, the final, edited ending sucked compared to what they apparently originally had to work with, and their editors are assholes for not sticking with it as originally planned. Grrrrr.

I'm glad there are people out there who are smarter with DVDs than I am, that's all I can say.

Also, I'm amused that everyone has their own theory of what the cover of HBP indicates - I've so far heard that Dumbledore is dead (which I thought all the way back in OotP), and that Snape is dead (more sensible, in my opinion, because of the Potions text. I, however, believe that this vindicates my theory on the identity of the half-blood prince: it's so Snape, folks. I'm telling you, he's the long-lost grand-son of Rasputin and the last czarina of Russia. It all makes sense, now, doesn't it?

Oh, come on. Just humour me. ;)

Right. Working on paper, now.

And Happy International Women's Day!!!

ETA: Okay, I get the confusion, now. See, there's the normal cover and there's also the British 'adult' cover. So what does this tell me? Well, obviously, the pensieve will be important. And potions. And Dumbledore. And possibly Snape. I'm siding with the folks who suggest that Snape dies in this one, even though by story!logic, it's time for good ole Dumbledore to kick it... because just by saying that, I will probably ensure that no, she'll kill Dumbledore. Just to 'spite' me. So there!
