I am sick to death of hitting up against Torchwood: Miracle Day trailers everywhere, but I've sort of got used to tuning them out. It's Starz, for god's sake. When was the last time they did something worthwhile?

And then I09 goes and says something like this:

And all indications are that Torchwood will be this summer's answer to Inception: a huge mindfuck with a human story at its center.

In which I rant, and come to the conclusion that this is really all about me not having any TV to watch right now and feeling the need to remind myself that I, personally, will only be disappointed if I allow myself to even consider getting sucked into Torchweek 2: The Revenge. Warning: These are the ramblings of a person who Did Not Like Torchweek 1. If you liked it, you will probably not agree with anything I say in here, and that's totally cool. Just a fair warning. )

I don't care how many alums of my favorite sci-fi shows you cast for this year, Torchwood - we're through. I told you that last year, but you wouldn't listen to me, would you? You keep coming back, flaunting your fancy new American digs and casting people I love. I don't care.

I kind of loved you when you were stupid and campy, Torchwood. I even kind of loved you when you tried to go serious, at the beginning. But every time we get together, it's great for the first 3/4 of the time... and then absolute shit for the last 1/4.

...I might forgive you if you brought back Tosh and Owen, though. Oh, and you could always throw in a few more BSG alums if you really wanted to get my attention.

And go back to Wales, for god's sake. It's just wrong, thinking of you in America.

Work is insane, so this is just a brief stop-off to say:

Oh, shit - this is going to be bad, isn't it? Spoilers in that link for, um, what I pray Torchwood will never actually become. o_O Please, no.

I thought we had a deal, RTD. I thought you were leaving. But it turns out you just won't go away. If you can't bring yourself to make Torchwood: The Victorian Era (which would be awesome by virtue of having Victorians with alien technology, Victorians having sex with aliens, evil imperialism, Jack before he got turned into a total angst-whore, and those psychotic sadistic girls shooting Jack all the time), then please just let the franchise die. Because I don't think I can stand watching you torture it any further.

Oh, and this bit? "Tranter might try to reboot "Doctor Who" for U.S. audiences" - don't the people at Fox remember the last time they tried to do that? When they totally destroyed it? No memory?

Oh, Fox. Get your dirty little hands off my things, you money-grubbing destroyers of all that is good.

I've finally finished the Torchwood Christmas wallpaper that I started working on last year. It's pieced together from the two halves of a Daily Mirror spread a few years ago, and... let me tell you, if I ever see that stupid wallpaper in the background of shot ever again, it'll be too soon. Seriously.

Click for the full-size version - it's 1440 by 900, so feel free to size as needed.

To absolutely no one's surprise, John Barrowman confirms that there will somehow be a 4th season of Torchwood with the normal 13 episodes.

No word yet on whether it will have actual characters, or for how long they will live. :P

I know I say this every year... but I am so freaking done with this show. Unless their cast for this coming season turns out to consist of PC Andy, Martha Jones, all three fantastic female characters created in Children of Earth, and also That Guy They Killed in the First Episode of Children of Earth, with special all-series-guests Naoko Mori and Burn Gorman in a special "sorry, we were stupid, we should never have killed our best actors!" last minute turnaround... I just don't freaking care anymore. Don't get me wrong, I love the remaining normal cast, but... well... not that much.

Oh, and they can make Mfanwy a major character, too. That'd help. I might watch that.

Stay tuned for six months from now, when, by virtue of BBC mind control, I still somehow end up getting excited for this stupid thing for the fourth year in a row and end up unwittingly watching the whole series, while all the while bitching and moaning about how it really could be good, if they would just get some decent writers.

Edit: In other news: New Moon in Fifteen Minutes. ♥

Title: Water Under the Bridge
Fandoms: Hellboy and Torchwood/Doctor Who.
Characters: Yvonne Hartman, Jack Harkness, Liz Sherman, Hellboy, and Abe Sapien, and one other brief cameo if you a) squint and b) aren't too attached to canon.
Pairing: Jack/Abe
Summary: The BPRD wants some help from Torchwood, and Yvonne sends someone she wants to get rid of for a while. Jack decides he doesn't mind one bit.
Warnings: Again, it's Jack-fic. There is sex. It's consensual and not graphic, but if you're underage or that's not your thing, don't read it. Also, spoilers for Hellboy II.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters, and I don't mean to infringe.
Notes Originally posted here, but I wasn't satisfied with the original version, and now I've done enough editing and tweaking on this one that I figured I'd just repost, rather than quietly editing the old one.

Set, mysteriously, pre-series for Torchwood, and yet post-movie for the Hellboy crew. Don't ask me how that works. The back-stories here are not compliant with the Torchwood episode Fragments, which I, personally, detest. Because really, there are so many more interesting and sensible ways that all of that could have happened. None of them, unfortunately, involve the BPRD. Except here.

And it’s all [livejournal.com profile] beam_oflight’s fault. This one’s for you, sweetheart. As usual, you managed to send me exactly the bunny I never knew I needed to write. ;) (And look! Despite being Jack, it even has a sort of a plot!)

This is still not the Abe-fic I've been working on for a year. That, with luck, will come later.

Because you, Mr Harkness, are a problem for Torchwood. )

Unedited (apologies, and please let me know of any mistakes!) and bizarre, but I do love when I can finish something in one day. ♥

Title: Jack Does the Universe, Part 2: The Continuing Adventures of Jack Harkness in His Efforts to Dance with Every Sentient Species in Existence
Summary: Does what it says on the tin. Jack's had a rough time of it in canon lately, and I, personally, would rather get back to happy-go-lucky shag-anything-sentient-and-possibly-that-sexy-potted-fern!Jack. So, I have done. No spoilers here. The original "Jack Does the Universe" is here at my LJ, or here on Teaspoon.
Warning: Do I really need to be specific, here? It's Jack. There's sex. Please don't read if you're under-age.

In a recent post, [livejournal.com profile] vonquixote commented on media that "constructs its gay couples as doomed, fraught relationships between people who are in some way wrong (which Torchwood has done frequently throughout its run) and presents its straight couples* as the human side that reminds everyone what they're fighting for." (Original post is here.)

In a word - YES. This is what I've been struggling for so long to find a way of commenting on, in regards to RTD's writing on Doctor Who and Torchwood. And it leads me to another situation that's been driving me crazy for about a year and half, now - ever since I suddenly noticed that somehow every time RTD has a gay couple on one of his shows... something goes terribly, terribly wrong. Specifically with one or both parties of the couple. One of them is abusive (DW, "Midnight") or crazy manipulative (TW, that one with Tosh's alien 'girlfriend'), or... well, it would take too long to describe everything that's wrong with Jack and Ianto's relationship, as much as I love both of them.

This entry contains, but does not center around, spoilers for Torchwood 'Children of Earth' )

Thoughts, comments, thwacks upside the head?

I just listened to two of the Torchwood audio plays while packing (the third I'm saving for next week at work, since I could download it...), and you know what? Miracle of miracles, they were actually pretty damned good. I mean, whatever tiny bits of science crept in sucked (particularly on that last one...), but the writing was actually really good (for Torchwood, at least), and the cast didn't ham it up horribly like they did with the one last year (I can't blame them for that, mind - with that shit script hamming was the only option).

But seriously, these plays read like good episodes, rather than shoddy, cheap-ass junk. Color me impressed - maybe these specials coming up will actually be good, too, even without Tosh and Owen!

In other news, I love my new haircut... so here's one shot of that, and a few other random bits.

Images are thumbnails, but cut for convenience - beneath are pictures of me, the boy, a little local scenery from hiking last week, and, of course, my cat )

How to Meet and Woo a Nerdy Girl.

It amuses me how many of those are accurate to me and my relationship. With the exception of the video games (I appreciate them, I just suck at them!) and... I actually had to look up Liz Lemon on Wikipedia. Still, good list. ♥

In other news, the Torchwood radio dramas are theoretically available here, but for some totally strange, random and thus totally typical of the BBC and their random decisions, I cannot seem to download any but the middle one. This upsets me immensely. It says I can, so why do I keep getting a nasty little file that says "not allowed?" And if I can't, then why can I download the middle one? *Sighs*

Gwen icon used purely for the Torchwood thing. And now, off to get dressed, get a little packing done, and get out to my stylist's! Wish me luck on not having to have too much of my recent growth chopped off due to how long it's been since I've had a trim!

The second round of [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang has been released, and I wanted to take a moment to pimp the whole collection of fic and art, but most especially the two I had the pleasure of reading while they were still in beta:

Centre of the Universe by [livejournal.com profile] azarsuerte. In the aftermath of the Time War, a wounded TARDIS brings a dying Doctor to the one person who might be able to save not only his life, but also his will to live: Nyssa of Traken.

Old Horizons, New Skies by [livejournal.com profile] lorannah. During a fight with a figure from his past Jack is transported to a parallel Earth - faced with alternate versions of his Torchwood teams, both old and new, he begins to wonder whether Torchwood only ever ruins people's lives. Can he avoid drawing them all back in to the danger and madness again? And will he get home?

Check them out, and be sure to let the authors know what great jobs they did!

And, in a note tangentially related to my last post... apparently Barrowman got himself in trouble for exposing himself on a live radio show?

Because... penises are so dangerous that we can't even hear about them being shown? I'm confused...

It's turning into Christmas fic, but I'm still plugging along!

Title: Aflame
Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: Ten, Jack, Martha
Timeline: Set during the end of “Last of the Time Lords.” I always wondered how they got from the Master’s pyre straight on to Martha, Jack, and Ten in Cardiff having a grand old time. This fic gave me a chance to fill in the blanks a little.

Written for [livejournal.com profile] sigelphoenix, who asked for Ten/Jack/Martha that doesn’t spoil for anything past S3 in Doctor Who, and doesn’t need Torchwood canon to make sense. I hope I managed. :)

Summary: After the Year that Wasn’t, the Master isn’t the only one who’s burning.

I refuse to take pictures of my bandaged up knees (because, honestly, having co-workers say things like "but, please tell me you were at least drunk when this happened" after I tell them the story is bad enough), but I did finally take a picture of the Torchwood t-shirt this morning, as I promised I would ages ago.

Oh, and there's also a picture of one of the rabid evil boots.

And a brand-new, hand-stenciled red Torchwood t-shirt. Reads: Torchwood Institute: World's Most Famous Secret Organization, under the Torchwood t-logo.

Roommate made the stencil - her shirt is red-on-black, mine is black-on-red.

Current news in archaeology brings up an issue that's been bothering me for a long time. First the news. Archaeologists at a site first discovered in 1900 have found sophisticated tools linked to Neanderthals. This is a big deal because it's still more evidence that we've misunderstood Neanderthals since their discovery back in the 19th century - they were definitely not the stereotypical cavemen we all picture when we first hear the name, and it's looking more and more like they were anything but stupid. The question of how our closest cousin species disappeared is still a mystery, but we can be certain now that it wasn't because they were just lugs who couldn't figure out how to use technological means to keep up with us Humans.

And now, those of you who've read the subject-line of this post are thinking "okay, but... Weevils?"

I've got an analogy, and I'm not afraid to use it! )
