equality for everyone. and also, pie. ...I wish.

Happy Minna Canth Day to the Finns on my f-list, and Equality Day to all of us, because damn it, we all ought to have that holiday.

I, unfortunately, have come down with the Martian Death Cold (tm) that's been running circles around the office for the last few weeks, and am consequently a) brain-dead, and b) exhausted. And incapable of thinking of anything for more than three minutes straight... which, you can imagine, is causing some trouble with actually getting work done.

But! I should be able to concentrate long enough to come up with a handful of awesome female characters, to celebrate the awesomeness of Equality Day, shouldn't I? I hope so. I'll even try not to steal too many of [livejournal.com profile] ruuger's, even though it'll be tough because, damn, she picked some really good ones. ;)

I can't pick just one... but I also didn't want to completely crib from [livejournal.com profile] ruuger, who put down all the B5 women, so... I compromised and picked half of them? My two favorites. Delenn kind of annoyed me at the beginning of the series, because she seemed so stereotypically sweetness-religion-and-light, and then, creeping in over time, I started to get the impression that there was a whole lot more going on under all that. Like a really scary woman who ran the Grey Council with an iron touch, wasn't afraid to drag her whole planet into civil war over what she felt was right, and faced down an entire armada effectively all on her own. And won. Oh, and ordered the complete genocide of the Human race... but she changed her mind in the end, so it's all okay. ;) She may play sweet and innocent, but watching her manipulate the whole freaking universe to protect what she loves and cares just makes me so proud. And Ivanova? Ivanova is just plain God. Of course.

It's funny - I hated Buffy when I first started watching the show, too. The well-dressed California-girl thing just grated on my nerves. Loving her snuck up on me, as we watched the first few seasons, and after that, I was lost. She's neurotic, occasionally a bit prissy, caught up in looks, sure, and occasionally she has all the moments of pettiness and bad taste that you expect from a girl her age, but she's also unfailingly brave, loyal, and tough, and a really human heroine. Not to mention totally kickass.

Because who wouldn't love a brassy, tough, dyke-y girl who wears a leather bomber jacket, hates dresses, and loves to blow shit up? Obviously not me. She and Seven are the ultimate in the Doctor-and-companion as father-daughter relationship, for me, and Ace appeals to me as the complete reverse of the traditional twisted-ankle-pretty-girl stereotype of the companions (which, to be fair, I personally don't think any of the girls really are).

Always. Kickass female skeptic and scientist, with a gun and no-nonsense shoes. How can I not approve? Still one of my biggest fictional heroines.

More later, maybe? Running out of lunch break, as it is. :P ...and I can code, really....

I love them all, esp. Ivanova and Scully! Love for Ace is growing a lot, I really need to get around to watching more stuff with her in. Esp. the episode when she beats up a Dalek with a baseball bat! Not so keen on Buffy, probably because of all teh female chacters on Buffy I like her least, Willow, Anya and Tara will always be the awesome women of Buffy.

Who else? Romana, of course. Suzie from Torchwood, got killed far to early...twice. I would say someone from BSG but I don't really like any of them they're all interesting, but ultimatly unlikable.

I'm so sorry you're sick. I hope it isn't what I had, that damn thing layed me out for 3 solid weeks. Let me know if you
need to reschedule Sunday to get a solid weekend of rest.

is the Martian Death Cold (tm) similar to teh plague monkeys that have been infesting the art institute of late?

Ivanova is God, for sure. And Delenn is cool, though yeah, I sometimes get tired of the side of her that feels like an overenthusiastic acolyte. Fortunately, that doesn't happen often. And she kicks ass amazingly well.

So, I hate to have to ask, but just what the heck is Equality Day? Never heard of it before, I don't think, though the name has promise ;)

I think it's awesome that we have this day, but I'm also a little sad about the fact that people don't seem to know what to make of it/with it. And some of the flippant comments I've heard about it from men, even from friends, are not very encouraging.

I think I have Martian Death Cold, too. Or at least a Martian stuck down in my throat.

Ace and er Nitro 9 and Ivanova - that'd be a scary combination. (Delenn & Scully are cool as well, Buffy not so much - I prefer Willow ;-) )
