something wicked this way comes....

Hey, [livejournal.com profile] zinjadu (and all other Sean Bean and/or Shakespeare fans)...

Take a look at this.

♥ ♥ ♥

Update: Oh, and while I'm linkspamming... I did a little checking at the official Star Trek site (www.startrek.com, as though any of you couldn't have guessed it...) and found this:

In addition to clarifying that he may or may not direct the film, Abrams also distanced himself from Variety's report that the plot of "Star Trek XI" would revolve around a young James T. Kirk and Spock at Starfleet Academy.

"We've made a pact not to discuss any specifics," he said.

At the same time, though, he confessed to being a fan of the Original Series and remarked, "Those characters are so spectacular. I just think that... you know, they could live again."

I'm a bit relieved by this, honestly, mostly because the Starfleet Academy plot idea seemed even further from the usual Trek movie than I'd expect. Still very interested to see what comes of this.

YES. I can't wait to see what they do with it! And it's filming this fall, in Scotland!!!

*Nods* I'd heard the same rumors about the Academy show, but I'd always figured it'd never work, same reason you cited. A movie... is possible, but I still think it'd be iffy. There's just so much potential for people to misunderstand, think it's a kids movie or something... I don't know. I'd vote that the go with something a bit more general, but hey - if they find a good way to do it, I'm interested to see what comes.

Wouldn't that be hilarious? I'd just die of laughter. And I was going to say in my original post that I wanted to see the original actors in cameo roles, preferably as far off from their usual parts as possible... but then I realized that pretty much no matter what they did with Walter Koenig, it'd leave me snickering about Bester. :D

Awesome! *wiggles excitedly*

*nod* I do have faith in J.J. Abrams as a director even though it would have been SO AWESOME if they'd given it to JMS... so we'll just have to wait and see what develops.

Ben Affleck... just trying to put him in my head together with Leonard Nimoy is causing major system failure. Ben Affleck can be a decent actor (but if, and only if, he's acting alongside Matt Damon, it seems) but he's just so very... un-Spocky.

Well, if they did do actor cameos, they wouldn't have that many left... Will Shatner, George Takei, Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols, and Walter Koenig are the only original crew-members still alive.

Hee. And yes, Bester. And the thing about Bester is that whenever I see him, I just go "Heeheeeeeee, Chekov."

See, much as I love JMS... Okay, so he's like the plot god. Nobody does big huge plot arcs like he does. I'm less enthused by his ability as a director/writer of dialogue, though - sometimes he's great, and then sometimes it goes off the deep end into total melodrama. And while it might work, it might also go too far and end up shooting the script in the foot, you know what I mean?

On the other hand, I would still so totally back it if he'd been given the chance. If only because... damn, it'd be nice to see him work with a real budget. ♥

No, no - Affleck is totally not Spocky-y. Although I'm not sure who is, come to that. They might have to go with a total uknown... at the very least I can't think of anybody who'd work.

I know. It's like whichever one he's supposed to be, I'm automatically thinking of the other. They're just such great contradictions! XD

Yeah, cos overdramatic dialogue never happens in Star Trek. XD But yeah, I do think Abrams does have a better grasp of dialogue. And he is very good at twisty-twisty plots. Not so much overarching-epic plots, but still.

Hmmm... you know, the only person I can think of who could maybe pull Spock off is, actually, Johnny Depp. He doesn't really look much like Leonard Nimoy, but I think he could play the character well.

Walter Koenig for the win! It's too bad he didn't show up for COmedy Central's Will Shatner Roast. That woulda been awesome.

No, never. XD

Johnny Depp. As Spock. ...Are you trying to bring back my insane pre-adolescent crush on Spock, or would this just be a fun side-effect? I... honestly can't decide if that would be terrifyingly wrong or terrifyingly possible.

It would! He plays comedy well enough that I'd imagine he has a good sense of humor, too.

[identity profile] miss-arel.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
*snerk* Well, I do think Depp's a very good character actor, and he seems to love challenges (I seem to recall him saying once that he'd love to be in a movie where he could play a woman because it would be such an intersting challenge). And Spock's an unusual character to begin with -- add to that that he's got 40+ years of the fan love for the character (and the side effect that the fans would crucify anyone who didn't do Spock justice)... I could see him being all over that role.

Plus, heck, I know my mom was a fan of the original Star Trek for Spock. (Shatner who? XD) It would make sense for the new Spock to be another actor who's popular with women.

If this is at all incoherent, I apologize. I really need to go to bed.

Oh, he's a fabulous actor, and I know he could pull it off from that end. Physically, it'd be weird... but who knows? And there's always the fear that people just wouldn't take him seriously... hell, I'm not sure I could take him seriously in that part, and that's despite the fact that I think he's one of the best actors of this generation. It's just such a bizarre thought.

I think everybody who liked ST was a fan for Spock. At the very least all the women. ;)

I could potentially see Affleck as a young Scotty.
