kraken rum
I don't normally talk about presents (not sure why, exactly, it just feels odd), but I thought a lot of people here would appreciate the gift
tavern_wench1 gave me. Kraken Rum!

Click to embiggen. And yes, that's what (at least part of) my cube at work looks like. Behind the rum you can see my two African violets, Delenn and Drusilla (Dru is the very dark-leafed one who's between bloomings right now - her blossoms are dark purple with crimped white edges when she has them... and yes, I name my plants). And a page from my Dalek calendar last year, a Serenity postcard, and a postcard from Taiwan. ♥
So... anybody have any really good mixer ideas for dark spiced rum? Preferably something that doesn't involve Coke, as I probably shouldn't have that much caffeine or sugar. :P

I like rum with fruit juice (something berry-ish, not citrusy), but that probably doesn't help you on the "not so much sugar" front.

No, juice is a good idea! I'm just trying to avoid the OMG TOO MUCH SUGAR in sodas. :P The only thing I'd come up with on my own was to go for the Dry Sodas (not sure if they have them everywhere... might be a local company; they're clear sodas flavored with things like vanilla, lavender, rhubarb, lemongrass, etc, but with about half the sugar of regular sodas). Vanilla sounded like it might work well with spice rum.

My current alcohol project involves making my own liqueurs, after having tried a friend's - so, so good.

Oooo. I had blackberry cordial made by a friend a long time ago - that was late summer in a bottle, let me tell you. ♥ You'll have to let me know how the project works out, and share recipes!

Maybe a variation on a mudslide, if you're into sweet drinks? I've got a chocolatey one that's a pretty big hit. These measurements are for one drink, which is how I bartend, instead of batches.
In a shaker or pint glass, combine:
Ice
1 oz (about a 3-count pour) dark rum
1 oz Kahlua
1 oz Bailey's Irish Cream
1 oz chocolate milk (add extra syrup for the best taste)
Splash of vanilla extract
Shake well, and pour into a pint glass.
There's also the Short Island Iced Tea, which is rum mixed with peach schnapps and a splash of coke.

Here you go! The whole shop is full of stuff like this, so if you don't like that one, there are other options. :D
