kraken rum

I don't normally talk about presents (not sure why, exactly, it just feels odd), but I thought a lot of people here would appreciate the gift [livejournal.com profile] tavern_wench1 gave me. Kraken Rum!

Click to embiggen. And yes, that's what (at least part of) my cube at work looks like. Behind the rum you can see my two African violets, Delenn and Drusilla (Dru is the very dark-leafed one who's between bloomings right now - her blossoms are dark purple with crimped white edges when she has them... and yes, I name my plants). And a page from my Dalek calendar last year, a Serenity postcard, and a postcard from Taiwan. ♥

So... anybody have any really good mixer ideas for dark spiced rum? Preferably something that doesn't involve Coke, as I probably shouldn't have that much caffeine or sugar. :P

That's awesome! And reminds me that I need to get you your gift. It might be a good excuse to get together, y/y?

Getting together would be awesome! ♥ We're pretty booked this weekend, but maybe next week sometime?

I've had that - not bad stuff.

I like rum with fruit juice (something berry-ish, not citrusy), but that probably doesn't help you on the "not so much sugar" front.

Yay! I'd love it just for the bottle, but that's all for the better if the rum itself is good. ;)

No, juice is a good idea! I'm just trying to avoid the OMG TOO MUCH SUGAR in sodas. :P The only thing I'd come up with on my own was to go for the Dry Sodas (not sure if they have them everywhere... might be a local company; they're clear sodas flavored with things like vanilla, lavender, rhubarb, lemongrass, etc, but with about half the sugar of regular sodas). Vanilla sounded like it might work well with spice rum.

Well, my idea of good in mixed drinks tends to veer towards the weird, but I like rum with Juicy Juice fruit punch. I think of this as being a summer drink, though, and I'm not sure I've ever tried it with a spicedrum, but it still sounds like a good idea to me.

My current alcohol project involves making my own liqueurs, after having tried a friend's - so, so good.

Hehehehe. Mine... is kind of all over the place. I think I might have to hunt down some nice autumn-y juices (maybe apple or cranberry sweet cider? Or pomegranate juice?) and see how that works out for me.

Oooo. I had blackberry cordial made by a friend a long time ago - that was late summer in a bottle, let me tell you. ♥ You'll have to let me know how the project works out, and share recipes!

Kraken rum is excellent. I first had it at this huge party my friends and I threw (along with Southern Peachtree Vodka - tastes like spiked iced tea), and it's awesome by itself, too.

Maybe a variation on a mudslide, if you're into sweet drinks? I've got a chocolatey one that's a pretty big hit. These measurements are for one drink, which is how I bartend, instead of batches.

In a shaker or pint glass, combine:

Ice
1 oz (about a 3-count pour) dark rum
1 oz Kahlua
1 oz Bailey's Irish Cream
1 oz chocolate milk (add extra syrup for the best taste)
Splash of vanilla extract

Shake well, and pour into a pint glass.

There's also the Short Island Iced Tea, which is rum mixed with peach schnapps and a splash of coke.

Ooooo. Awesome, those both sound wonderful. I think I could really get into the Short Island Iced Tea, though I miiiiiight have to keep those to very short glasses as well. I'm such a freaking lightweight. :P

Clearly I need to find that mug Kate was looking at last night--it was ceramic and had a tentacle for the handle. *g* So whatever drinks you had, you could use that cup.

OMG tentacle mug! Yes! If you could send me the link to that, it would be fantastic!

Here you go! The whole shop is full of stuff like this, so if you don't like that one, there are other options. :D

I actually don't know much about mixing drinks, but I just wanted to say how I love that you name you plants. *grin*

Lol. I name pretty much everything, but especially plants (and computers). ♥

Happy Birthday! I just saw the notice come up on my LJ page, and thought I'd say it before you get too drunk to read it. :D Enjoy the rum!

Absolutely nothing to say other that I'm jealous - I've seen Kraken rum before, and wanted just for the bottle :P
