it's cold, but wonderful

My new office is straight across the way from a fabulous Asian grocery called Uwajimiya (locals should all know it!), and in the food court there are a bunch of little bakeries, delis, grills, and so on. I don't usually eat there, because it's easier and healthier to buy a few packages of veggie steam buns at the beginning of the week and heat up a few every day for lunch, but yesterday I stopped by to replenish my stash of satsumas and buy a little candy... and I noticed that the little frozen yogurt place in the food court, which has looked exceptionally sad lately because it's been too cold for people to think of buying from them, has avocado lime listed as one of their flavors.

I'm kind of obsessed with unusual flavors of ice cream and frozen yogurt and sorbet and things like that. It's a Thing. As long as the flavor is not meat-based, I'll probably try it (no, no horse-meat ice cream for me, and if you think I'm making that up you really ought to do yourself the favor of Googling "japanese ice cream flavors"). There's a place in my neighborhood that rotates all kinds of unusual flavors, and out of them, Cardamom, Spring Garlic, and Cucumber have been some of my favorites.

So I couldn't possibly resist Avocado and Lime. There was no way.

I came back today and happily rang the bell and ordered Avocado and Lime. But they don't have it. They rotate their flavors by the day. Tragedy!

So I had coconut instead, with pecans. It's very good. ...But I'm going to have to come back every few days and check what flavors they have available that day, because I'm determined to have my avocado and lime frozen yogurt.

If you don't mind my asking, what exactly are "veggie steam buns"? We don't have a lot of food variety in my neck of the woods. :(

Which is doubly sad because I would be all over Cardamom Ice Cream. (Which I misread as 'Cardassian Ice Cream.' I'll go away now.)

There's about a dozen variations that go by a dozen names in different regions - I call them all "bao" (Cantonese for "bun"), thanks to Firefly. :P This article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manapua) has some specifics, although it seems geared entirely toward the more common pork buns. I don't like barbecued pork, so when I get them fresh and hot from the vendors I get chicken and mushroom if it's available (it's apparently popular with a lot of other people, too...) or taro (sweet purple potato). In the frozen section, though, there are variations (specifically Nikuman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikuman), I think, as they're from Japan) filled with things like leeks and mushrooms and Chinese spinach or mustard greens or what-have-you. Those make me happy, because they're smaller and come in packs, and they're easier to freeze, and they appease my desire to avoid eating too much meat.

...Yeah, welcome to Seattle. We steal the cuisine of every part of the world! ♥ I never realized how shocking that was until I started dating my Boy, who is from Arizona and was somewhat flabbergasted by the Indian restaurant we went to on our first date. ;)

Ohgod the cardamom. It's unbelievably tasty. These are the guys who do it (http://www.mollymoonicecream.com/), they're flat-out amazing. If you're ever in the area, let me know and I'll make sure you find them. ;)

...And you know that Cardassian ice cream would end up tasty like fish. It so totally would. Probably like one of the flavors here (http://www.who-sucks.com/food/101-frightening-ice-cream-flavors-from-around-the-world). :P

Oh my, I want chicken-and-mushroom buns now. I want chicken-and-mushroom ANYTHING now. My mouth is watering, literally.

On the upper part of the east coast, the cuisine tends more toward Italian and Greek, although it mixes up when you travel into the college towns. There was a Thai place in my school's town, the only one I've ever seen in this area.

I might have to make a trip just for the ice cream! It sounds heavenly.

And that site is horrifying. Although now I want to write a Garak/Bashir fic about fish-flavored ice cream.

It'd be nice to have more Greek and Italian food. We have some, but not a whole lot, and it's hard to find the really good places. There's one good Greek place that I know of nearby, and our favorite Italian place closed a while ago, and we still haven't found a replacement. *Sniffles*

Oh, Thai food. ♥ I love Thai food.

I might have to make a trip just for the ice cream! It sounds heavenly.

They change out their stuff about once a month, but they always have good stuff (The Boy swears by their coffee, but the honey lavender and balsamic strawberry are both fantastic, too, and they also always have vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, and salted caramel), and the variations are things like... oh, sweet corn, peach and basil, sweet basil, mulled wine sorbet, blood orange sorbet, things like that.

Although now I want to write a Garak/Bashir fic about fish-flavored ice cream.

Ha! You should, that'd be awesome! (Poor Julian, he'd be so horrified.)

If you're ever on my end of the country, stop by and I'll make you homemade cheese lasagna, chicken alfredo, or something else spelled strangely. :)

the honey lavender and balsamic strawberry are both fantastic

*drool* I might be hopping on a plane soon.

Poor Julian, he'd be so horrified.

Y'know, I don't have any plans this weekend...

Ohhhhh lasagna. ♥ The place that closed down recently had the best lasagna bolognese ever. It just kills me that they're gone.

Lol.

Wheee!

Uwajimaya!!!! Soooooo jealoussss!

I work in Bellevue, but honestly, if not for being stalked and harrassed, I'd wish I worked in the city. There's so much in Seattle. Ah... I shall envy you from across the lake. I'm glad you're in your new office though!

Oh yesh, I've been tempted by that place but I fall in with the "it's too cold for frozen yogurt" train of thought. Every time we walk by, though, my resistance wanes just a little bit.
