First week of the job seems to have gone pretty well. I'm still sort of in panicky "I can't really do a lot of things so I feel like a total slacker/loser/lame-ass" land, but I expect that will be changing by next week. I'm already doing some of the work, I just can't do it without my mentor being here to assign it and check it over for me.

K and I signed a lease for an apartment last night, with the start date of July 1. Now that I look, I realize that July 1st is a Saturday, so probably we won't get a lot of moving done that weekend because I figure they'll need to clean the carpets and stuff before we can actually move in. But we've got it, anyway. It's a bit small, but it's in exactly the area we wanted, and it's a very nice little place. Now I seriously need to get my butt in gear on getting rid of junk, packing stuff, cleaning the current house, etc. Loads of fun. And figuring out what of my furniture needs to go away. I'm debating selling/getting rid of my futon and buying a new bed... the futon is huge (which I love, but which is impractical in a small apartment), and it might be handier to have something with more storage space underneath. At the same time, I like my futon, and dislike the idea of having to buy new furniture. Good thing I have a month to make this decision. :P

I foresee a lot of fussing in the next month or so. Fussing, listing of items that I need to get rid of, hauling piles of junk to various thrift stores and such-like, packing away stuff I don't use and sending it home to my parents... Ah, the joys of moving.

Congrats on the apartment!

I worry sometimes about when we move, because I can almost guarantee we're going to end up with a smaller place than we have now (and paying more for it. Boo!).

But I keep trying to remind myself that I once lived for years at a time in a little dorm room with maybe 10% of the stuff I haul around now, and it was kind of nice that way.

Haven't fully convinced post-college "I work 40 hours a week so I can BUY all this stuff and it's MINE MINE MINE!" Self of this yet, but I keep trying.

Thanks! We're really excited about it, even though we're both sort of panicking now that we've actually committed to it. ;)

That's the thing - I lived in the dorms all those years, and the tiny apartment after that... and then I moved into the house and started getting settled there, moving all my stuff from my parents, collecting furniture and what-have-you. And now I'm stuck going "crap... I have too much junk!!!" Must cut back, must pretend I'm moving to a different country or something and cut all the deadwood out of my life. It feels like a good thing to do at this point.

I know what you mean about the money thing - the part of me that was stingy and unwilling to buy a damned thing in college has been progressively shutting up lately, and the part that wants nice things is getting louder. So I'm trying to keep the things little - nice art pens, new CDs, things like that. Nothing that takes up too much space. Hopefully I can keep it to that and to really nice, necessary, long-term kinds of things.

Thanks!

We've still got some stuff of yours in storage that we'll have to send down. Your parents' address is still the same, yeah? I think I've got it saved somewhere... though it might not hurt if you wanted to re-send, just in case. My gmail account (jrosegreen) is probably best.

I had a ton of stuff at my Dad's, too. I think I finally have everything now, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I'm a huge, huge packrat and it's hard for me to get rid of things. I find the best way for me to do it is to do so spontaneously. Just decide on the fly that I'm going through this shelf/box/what-have-you and purging. I do it right there and then and whatever isn't staying goes away right away (trash, donations, etc.).

That way I don't have time to really think about it before I do it and convince myself to keep it :D

Ah yeah, it's still the same addy! Man, I don't even remember what you guys have. Save for like... my VHD statue and my apron.

I'll pop my addy off to you anyway, just to be safe.

Yeah, that's all the stuff I can think of, too, but I'm fairly sure we'll find at least a few other things while we're cleaning out the garage. That garage... scares me. There's probably stuff in there that's developed independent intelligence and is plotting world domination, by now. o_O

Awesome, thanks! I know it's somewhere in my Hotmail account, but the thought of digging through that mess just gives me shivers.

Me, too. Packratting is probably my worst habit. So this month, it's all about getting rid of clothes that don't fit or that I don't wear, books that I thought I'd use but haven't yet opened, and other assorted junk that for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to save, but have no use for. So there. *Shakes fist at the gods of clutter*

Exactly - thinking about it is the kiss of death, because you can always convince yourself you might need something someday!

...Granted, I often find myself going "actually, I do have a mini-screwdriver!" or something like that. So... reality occasionally proves my packrat-ness useful. Which makes it even harder to get rid of things. :P

I'm glad you had a good first week at the new job, and congratulations on the apartment! Let me know when I can help with
the hauling of stuff you want to get rid of, cleaning etc. I'll be there. ;D
