Since I had to dig it up for a Tumblr post (which you can see here if you like), here's a link to Greg Aronowitz's blog post in which he tells the, er, fascinating story of how Delenn's makeup in the B5 pilot got to where we saw it (and from where), and how Mira Furlan made sure we got the Delenn we know and love.

http://barnyardfx.blogspot.com/2010/05/babylon-5-you-may-think-you-recognize.html

Choice quote:

"Mira suddenly shot up and said, "HIM!?! Did you say make HIM more human?” For the first time, Mira discovered that Delenn was supposed to be a man. I guess all of the descriptions in the script stated “frail alien” and “wise mystic”, but never really called out a sex. The gender change was something JMS was going to keep secret till the series needed the curve, but I guess it was kept TOO secret!"

PS: Why is the "preview" function on Dreamwidth totally broken? I hate not being able to check my HTML when I'm doing something other than just text and normal links...

Stolen from [personal profile] selenak, the End of Year Fannish Meme!

1. Your main fandom of the year? Old Star Trek: DS9 and ENT. I had a huge personal loss and massive life-change this year, as well as some resulting depression, and the combination sent me scrambling for comfort in the form of both the familiar and long-beloved (DS9) and the familiar-but-slightly-new (ENT).

2. Your favourite film watched this year? I'm terrible at picking only one favorite, so instead I'll list a few: Arrival, Moana, and Hail, Caesar! come to the top of my mind.

3. Your favourite book read this year? Again, terrible at picking only one, but I developed a passion for Georgette Heyer this year, and probably my favorite of her books is either Arabella or Frederica.

4. Your favourite TV show of the year? I'm going to go with "favorite new to this year," so that would be the short-lived but marvelously underrated BrainDead. Seriously, check this out if you missed it, it's hilarious, has a marvelous cast, and is perfectly delightful.

5. Your favourite online fandom community of the year? Meh, I have honestly not been that terribly involved in online fandom this year, apart from individually with a few friends. Mostly I love that there are still fans of the old stuff floating around putting up occasional new things.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year? Uh... The Force Awakens taught me that sometimes I really like Star Wars?

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year? Uhhhhhhhhhh... does the ENT finale count? Because wow, that was a piece of shit. I was prepared, and I was still horrified.

8. Your TV boyfriend of the year? 2016 shall go down in my fandom history as the year that I coped with my messed up life by falling head over heels for Commander Shran, and Jeffrey Combs in general.

9. Your TV girlfriend of the year? Hmm, let's say Mary Elizabeth Winstead, because I loved her character in BrainDead and was thrilled to see her doing something better than Scott Pilgrim.

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year? Seeing "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Globe Theater in London, and then watching the same production several months later when its final performance was streamed by the BBC. That was fucking fantastic.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms? The most missed would probably be Babylon 5, which I've been somewhat restraining myself from (just the thought of the DVD menus is enough to keep me from pulling them out, even though I'd love to rewatch some of my favorite episodes, and I'm a little afraid of falling face-first back into all that madness) and whose online camaraderie I really missed from the old days of LJ.

12. The fandom you haven’t tried yet, but want to? Hmm, dunno. We've been trying Leverage, but it's not really clicking yet? I know, that doesn't totally count. Uhhhh... I might watch Rogue One once it's on Apple TV? I'm afraid it'll be too Saving Private Ryan for me.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year? American Gods and Star Trek: Discovery. I suspect the former will surpass my usual levels of accepted violence/gore and the latter will disappoint me in some way, but I am still ridiculously excited for both and will do my best to stick them out regardless. Also looking forward to the as-yet-untitled (as far as I know) spin-off from The Good Wife, because damn but I miss that show. Oh, and Mass Effect: Andromeda. Man am I excited for that game.

I think I need a weekend to recover from my weekend.

It was mostly good - hen night / bachelorette night on Friday night (hooray for awesome drinking and dancing debauchery with my fantastic friends), followed by a craft day at [livejournal.com profile] shadawyn's on Saturday, and a birthday party for [livejournal.com profile] tavern_wench1's adorable little monster today.

Less awesome was the fire alarm that woke us up at 2:30 this morning, which turned out to only be our apartment and, upon investigation by some very nice and patient firemen, also turned out to be caused not by fire (fairly obvious) or by carbon monoxide (the less obvious second guess), but rather by the roof above us leaking into the smoke detector and causing it to go off. Maintenance has been notified and a bucket placed to catch any further dripping, but I hope it doesn't rain any more until we've got things settled. :P So yes, I need another darned weekend. Too sleepy.

Anyway! More of the fic.

The piece that [livejournal.com profile] hearts_blood and I wrote together for this year ended up getting a bit too big for a single post, so we'll be updating it in chapters over the next little while. It's not a WIP apart from a few little tweaks and additions that are ongoing... it's just big.

This is also the first part of the Delenn/Neroon AU that we've both been chattering about for nigh on a year, now. Hooray!

[livejournal.com profile] hearts_blood wrote me another side piece for the Neroon/Delenn AU that we've been working on (really, I swear, I've been writing for this thing, too... I just can't seem to finish anything that stands alone so far), and it is here.♥♥♥
rivendellrose: (Delenn2)
Yesterday, The Boy and I went to the art store to pick up some stuff, and I said to him "I need to draw again. I always feel like I should use my free time to write, but I miss drawing."

And then I came home and, after getting in my few hours of writing work, settled in and went absolutely insane. You all know what happens when I draw - something fannish, of course!

Fandom: B5
Character: Delenn (pre-series)
Medium: Mechanical pencil on bristol board, followed by Photoshop & Wacom tablet and some convenient stock photo and texture work (I knew that picture of the giant freaking ginko tree in Tokyo would come in handy some day...)
Notes: For (and all the fault of) [livejournal.com profile] hearts_blood, who gave me the idea in some stuff we were tossing around for the Neroon&Delenn AU of Doom yesterday.

what a day

Apr. 3rd, 2011 04:43 pm
rivendellrose: (orange)
Hell of a day. We ran circles trying to do errands, several of which ended up not being anything we can accomplish today because of stupid things like the apartment office changing their hours so that they're not open on Sundays anymore. Damn and hell, I want my BSG t-shirt! And I wanted to turn in our blasted notice of intent to vacate, too, so that isn't hanging over my head anymore, but nooooo. They had to be closed. Whatever, we'll do it next weekend. *Sigh*

Somewhat amusingly, our toilet spent the vast portion of the day being plugged (as we fiddled and fussed and plunged both our hearts out), and then when we finally got hold of the maintenance guy... he unplugged it in, like, two seconds. Apparently we need a better plunger. :P

But I did my taxes (hooray), and actually am getting a refund for a change, which is quite nice. So now I can stop feeling harassed about knowing I have to do that, at least. It's never actually as agonizing as I think it's going to be, but damned if I don't wish they'd just send a damned invoice or something, since they're already keeping track of it all anyway. Oh well.

There's still laundry to be done and dinner to be made, but at least now I can sort of relax for the rest of the day.

Oh! And look, look, look! [livejournal.com profile] hearts_blood wrote me lovely Delenn/Dukhat fic set in the pre-series days of our AU-verse! ♥
rivendellrose: (Delenn2)
All the B5 fen around here should go take a look at [livejournal.com profile] hearts_blood's Delenn/Neroon fic over here, with bonus Branmer. Not only is it totally awesome, but it's the first publicly-visible bit of the slightly monstrous AU that's been eating both our brains for the last few weeks. XD

And now I am off to pick up my sandwich. This whole online ordering thing from the awesome little cafe next door to the office is very handy, and also totally addictive. ♥
rivendellrose: (Grey)
Ever have that experience where you're working on writing a (non-original) character you've never written before, but you have a strong mental image of in your head... and about halfway through writing, you think "well, it's been a while, I'd better watch a few clips to make sure I'm getting their voice right and all." So you pop in the DVDs, watch a few bits... and are immediately taken by the shocking realization that although technically your mental image of them was correct, you had somehow completely neglected to remember about a zillion little details about them, and they actually look a hell of a lot different than how you'd been recalling them?

...Yeah. That's what I get for starting to write fic in a fandom I haven't touched in a while without getting the DVDs out first.

The irony is, I'm pretty sure my voice was right all along. I'm just kind of boggled by how wrong my mental image was, physically. Very strange.

Also, I cannot find my home headphones. I know precisely where the pair at work are (on my desk, where they always are), but the pair at home has vanished. So much for my plan of listening to faintly embarrassing YouTube videos and such while I write... of course, at the moment, my brain is still reconstructing what I'm writing and considering the possibility that I have a highly revisionist hind-brain. Seriously, what is it about B5 in particular (for that is the fandom in question) that causes literally everything in it to be remembered in my mind as about 50% more awesome and attractive and visually appealing than it really was? Is it some kind of magic? And, if it is, can I borrow it? I can see how magic like that could come in seriously handy...

And then, if you're me, you're left wandering around vaguely wondering if you've misremembered other things, and muttering things like "I could have sworn he was taller than that." Bit unnerving. ...And very confusing to one's fiance, when one tries to explain why one is wandering around in a vague state of confusion.

What I have decided: is to borrow a line from that beloved children's book, The Velveteen Rabbit, about how when you love something, it's real. When you love something, it's just that much more beautiful in your mind than it "really" is. The sets often appeared to be made of cardboard and the costumes were often couch fabric, especially early on, and the guest actors often chewed the scenery (hell, so did some of the main actors), but I love this damned show so much that in my head, it is absolutely untouchable. In my head, it is myth and legend and sheer beauty. ...Even if, occasionally when I go back and look carefully at the details, the ink is a bit runny and the pages are more than a little careworn. And possibly someone scribbled a bit in the margins. That's okay. It's good. It's been loved.

The Five Questions Meme

How this meme works:
1 - Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 - I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3 - You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 - You'll include this explanation.
5 - You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

Anyone want questions?

My answers to her questions:

I natter, so answers are under the cut. )

So, as some of you know, I completely dropped the freaking ball on [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking due to a combination of family/holiday stress, crazy life events (read: omg!engaged!), and a pathetic and debilitating bout with writer's block. In short, I suck, and I apologize for that.

But do you know who doesn't suck? Freaking everybody else over at [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, that's who! They (including several of you!) freaking rock, because when I went my guilty little way to check my stocking this evening, I had a ton of absolutely freaking amazing stuff. I'm serious, there was wibbling. ♥

[livejournal.com profile] icepixie wrote me the most fantastically adorable Marcus/Susan fic ever, designed around the five poems that Marcus Cole knows by heart (and oh, are they perfect, and it's all so very Marcus. ♥

[livejournal.com profile] sophia_sol, who I don't even know, is my hero because she wrote me this awesome little Expendable drabble, and it made me very happy. ♥ Likewise [livejournal.com profile] sentientcitizen (whose username alone makes me grin), tried to write Expendable fic, only got one good sentence out of it, but it is one hell of an amazing sentence. I'm going to have to keep an eye on her from now on, because I bet the rest of that might come out eventually.

[livejournal.com profile] paranoidangel42 wrote me Harry Sullivan and Sarah Jane Smith and space octopi!!! And [livejournal.com profile] cosmic_llin wrote wrote Ace and Romana!

Lastly but not in the least bit leastly, [livejournal.com profile] isilrandir, who I must clearly keep an eye on in the future, wrote me an absolutely beautiful bit of Abe/Liz from the Hellboy comics, and I squeed a lot because this is my favorite little slightly-canon and oh-so-perfect pairing. Seriously, I love those two, and this fic just catches them perfectly.

So much wonderful fic! ♥ So happy!!!

more fic!

Happy Halloween, and Blessed Samhain to everyone who celebrates!

I'm going to be heading off pretty quick to make dinner and to make sure I have a few candles laid in for lighting later on - it's my first holiday in quite a while that I actually intend to celebrate with something approaching a ritual (not much of one, mind, but this year Samhain seems like something I need to do for my own mental sanity, and... I've missed it), so I want to be sure I can find the few things I'll need. ...That being pretty much candles, matches, and a seasonally appropriate BPAL, so once I've tracked down my candle collection I guess I'm good. Maybe in the next house I'll put up an altar again, maybe not. Not sure. Either way, this'll do for now.

Oh, and here's one more fic. ;)

Fandom: B5
Characters: John and Delenn
Title: Trick or Treat
Summary: for [livejournal.com profile] kungfuwaynewho, who wanted to see Delenn asking about all the little kids running around asking for candy. Just a short bit of silliness.
Rating: Totally G.
Disclaimer: I don't own 'em, I'm not trying to make money off 'em, I'm just playing with 'em for a little bit.

Trick or Treat )
rivendellrose: (Delenn2)
Fandom: B5
Characters: Delenn, Susan, Lennier.
Warning / Rating: Safe and G.
Disclaimer: I don't own them, I'm not making money, I'm just playing a little bit.
Summary: For [livejournal.com profile] hearts_blood, who asked for Delenn/Lennier (natch), post-"Sleeping in Light," with the prompt of The Wild Swans at Coole, by W.B. Yeats. This was a tricky one, not least because I got a little caught up in my time-scheme issues. And also because Susan insisted on being involved. Borrows a little from the continuity of my earlier fic Out Here, although it should still be entirely understandable without reference to that.
Title: The Nineteenth Autumn

The Nineteenth Autumn )
rivendellrose: (Delenn2)
This one's for [livejournal.com profile] icepixie, who asked for Ivanova and Delenn on Minbar in the fall, and suggested that the trees might turn blue or something like that. I liked that idea, though I decided to go a little different with it.

Fandom: B5
Title: The End of Summer
Characters: Susan and Delenn
Timeline: after 'Sleeping in Light' (spoilers through season 5)
Disclaimer: I don't own 'em, don't make profit off 'em, just having a bit of fun.
Summary: Autumn comes to Minbar, and brings a new beginning with it.
Warnings: Unbeta'd. If you find any errors, please do throw them at me and I'll do what I can to clear things up.

Delenn said the year would soon be turning to autumn, but so far Susan had seen little to indicate the change. )

The last day of [livejournal.com profile] babylon5_love for this year is almost upon us, and since I'm still all a-wobble with fandom love, I want to do one more thing for the fest this year, for the free-for-all day. But I can't seem to figure out what I want to do. The headache I've had for half the day finally went away, but it seems to have left me somewhat brainless. And so I apply to you, LJ hive mind.

[Poll #1612133]

Keeping in mind, of course, that if something actually grabs me, I'll be doing that, and that this is all dependent on my actually finding time before Wednesday to actually finish whatever it is. But hey - I'm curious.

Title: "Another Time"
Fandom: B5
Note/Summary: [livejournal.com profile] eye_of_a_cat once told me that every Lennier fan is required to write at least one redemption fic. Likewise, I suspect that every Marcus/Susan fan is required to write at least one reunion or resurrection fic. This is that fic. I hope you'll forgive me.
Characters: Delenn, Marcus, Susan, and, yes, OCs. Sorry.
Rating: General Audiences.
Spoilers: Through Season 5.
Warning: Mention of character death (and not just the one you might be thinking of), OCs, and shameless romanticism.
Many warm thanks to: [livejournal.com profile] icepixie, [livejournal.com profile] velvet_midnight, and [livejournal.com profile] aris_tgd, who all provided invaluable advice in polishing this thing up. Any remaining errors are entirely my fault.
Disclaimer: I'm not trying to infringe or make any kind of profit, I'm just playing.
