The Five Questions Meme

How this meme works:
1 - Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 - I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3 - You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 - You'll include this explanation.
5 - You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

Anyone want questions?

My answers to her questions:

1. On which fictional planet would you most like to live?

Since I assume we're talking live long term, I think I'd prefer Minbar - technologically advanced and therefore quite safe (high medical technology and other comforts), a really fascinating culture (or, really, three of them) with an immensely long and varied history that I could spend decades learning about and understanding (and I bet their archaeology and historical records are both first-rate), and when one accounts for seeing it through 90s CGI, the planet itself seems like it would be beautiful. Plus, I love the people. I think I would miss greenery and trees, though.

2. Which fictional universe do you think does religion best B5 or BSG?

I think B5, because it deals with a greater variety within the subject, it (for the most part) doesn't rely on miracles or deus ex machina to solve its problems or create plot-points, but it does always leave me faintly wishing I was more deeply involved in my own beliefs. BSG does that to some extent, but then lose it by dropping off all reference to the Colonial religion that I identified with. :P Also, Delenn and her 'star-stuff' and the universe discovering itself through us is pretty much a case of me pointing at a screen and going "THAT." I have a lot of love and nostalgia and complicated feelings toward polytheism, and shuttle back and forth between embracing it and not, but pantheism is where my spirituality lives on a daily basis (at least recently), and it's nice to see it there.

That said, I think BSG dealt better with a lot of the more objectionable aspects of religion - holy wars and self-serving cult leaders and all that. They both definitely have their moments.

3. If you were single would you date Lennier?

I probably would if he were willing, but I doubt very much that it would last more than a few weeks. I'm not nearly noble enough for him to really feel something for, after Delenn, and he's not nearly forward enough for me. I think we'd be better off as good friends who could pine after Delenn together.

4. How are things going with your original fantasy novel?

On hold, at the moment, sadly. I have some friends who are starting a new niche publishing company, and I'm doing proofreading for their initial offerings and hoping to maybe throw a few short submissions their way in the future, and another set of friends are awaiting a second installment of something I've written before for their start-up erotic mag. That on top of the busy season at my work and planning a wedding for the fall is putting the "interesting" in "interesting times" at the moment. But I do mean to get back to both it and another idea that I've been actually trying to outline before writing, for a change.

5. If you could magically erase from canon any episode of any series, which would it be?

Just one? There are parts of B5's 5th season that beg the treatment ("No Compromises" springs immediately to mind...), but in the end I would have to use the zap on "The Woman King" from BSG. Good concept at its heart, but absolutely hideous writing, and the poor actors look physically pained by how out-of-character they're suddenly being made to play. The rest of B5's early fifth season was almost equally weak - it doesn't really start to recover, IMHO, until "Day of the Dead" - whereas BSG was almost uniformly well-written with a few glaring one- or two-episode holes in the middle of seasons. So the overall improvement gained by losing that single episode is greater, and it wins the boot.
