I couldn't resist.

Fandom: BSG (2003)
Characters: Kara and Socrata Thrace
Timeline: Pre-series.
Warnings: For once, for a miracle, I can think of nothing to warn for! Except possibly dubious craft practices. I'm fairly sure one could make ornaments this way, but I've certainly never done it, and I'm sure it'd be trickier than I've indicated.
Note: For [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge. I didn't manage to get Leoben in there, but I managed to explain why Kara was making these ornaments... ♥

[livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge, this made me think of you:

I was looking around Anthropologie online today, because I do strange things when I'm being lazy, and they have a Rippled Suncatcher Ornament that I think Kara would recognize. The progression of colors isn't quite perfect, I don't think, but I still had a moment of OMGWTF when I saw it. ♥

I'll be over here, telling myself that if I bought this lovely $50 ornament, yes, it would amuse me immensely to put it up on our tree... but only until my cat knocked it off and broke it into a million destiny-inducing (and inevitably sharp) pieces.

(New-series) BSG fans should check out [livejournal.com profile] 13th_tribe, a new discussion community created by [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge and [livejournal.com profile] rose_griffes for the appreciation and love of all the lovely Cylons of the 2003 series. I'm already signed up to mod a 2-week stint in late February, and am bouncing with glee at the idea of a whole community of love for our favorite toasters.

Speaking of which, Google is working on robots. (Apologies for the NYTimes link, which may not work if you don't subscribe - if I find anything about it later I'll try to remember to add the new link, but the article doesn't appear to be behind the pay-wall from where I'm sitting, at least.) Remember a few weeks ago when I said that I welcome our new Toaster overlords, in reference to another article about robotics? Yeah. That again. From now on, let's just take it as read that I've said that, shall we? ;)
rivendellrose: (toaster)
I can't beat IO9's headline for this story: The Folks Who Made The Robot 'Big Dog' Are Building a Real Cylon.

...Is it too early to say that I, for one, welcome our new Toaster overlords? ♥

Also, snagged from [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge:

In honor of All Hallow's Eve, I'm inviting trick-or-treaters to my 'door'.

Comment "trick-or-treat" to this post and I'll give you a treat. Treats can be anything that strikes my fancy (pics of fave actors or pairings, one sentence fics, graphics, a few words why I'm glad to have you on my flist, etc. etc.). The more "houses" to visit the more fun it'll be, so go ahead, open your journal and help spread the fun!

Can't promise I'll be prompt (y'all know usually happens when I do, after all... and I am actually at work, alas), but I'll try to get everybody!

Apparently this is the most "serious" Starbuck icon I have. *shrugs* I guess it works.

Fandom: BSG (2003)
Characters: Kara Thrace, Leoben, mentions of others.
Warning! Warnings: Blood, gore, and character death.
Summary: Kara can't seem to get away from death. Or from Leoben.
Spoiler Warning! Spoilers through the end of the series.
Notes: All [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge's fault, mostly for dropping a Leoben-muse in my lap. He won't go away. This whole thing was his idea.

DUDE.

Bear McCreary (he of the awesomely fantastic BSG soundtrack, among other things) wrote the official fanfare for the last shuttle launch tomorrow. Official NASA press release here.

That's tomorrow assuming it doesn't get delayed because of Weather. Either way, I'm such a crazy mix of sad at the end of an era and happy for another launch because that's always a cool thing, and now happy about Bear getting to do this, and aaaahhhhh.

BSG fans really ought to check out this discussion on NPR's Science Friday. It's about the origin of the word "robot," but I think you might recognize the plot description of the play the word was invented for.

Relevant bit of transcript from the interview under the cut: I think I've heard this before... )

There really is no new story in the world. ;)

Right, everybody - tell me that I don't want to buy this t-shirt.

Quickly. Before I decide that I really, really do.

Edit: Too late. Just ordered it. I am such a nerd... XD

Title: "To Be My Own"
Summary: She's meant to be his. They both are.
For: [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge, with thanks for the loaning of her muse. He really is very amicable, even if he did insist that a drabble was far too short.

Warnings: Kidnapping of a child, and reference to this fandom's would-be Stockholm Syndrome situation.

Notes: I cannot for the life of me remember what we called the marketplace on New Caprica (if it was ever called anything?), so I have dubbed it 'the agora.' Agora means marketplace in Ancient Greek. *Shrugs* And if I've totally borked canon somewhere along the line, please forgive me - TwizTV's scripts are helpful, but only go so far. :P

Whee, first finished fic in a good while, and the first ever in BSG.

Fandom: BSG (new)
Title: "A Relationship in 200 Pieces (With a Few Screws Loose)"
Characters: Helo, Athena, Boomer, and Starbuck.
Summary: Any relationship has its complications, and theirs is by no means normal.
Pairing: Inevitably, Helo/Athena (you didn't actually think I'd do something else for my first fic in this fandom, did you?).
Warnings: A lot of swearing, but since the majority of it is as technically safe as the show, I suppose I'm okay on that count. Other than that, I can only say that this follows canon through S4, so spoilers for anybody like me who didn't catch it first time around.
Notes: Unbeta'd, because I could sense a tendency growing in me to twiddle with it forever. If you see errors, please let me know and I'll try to correct them ASAP.

When asked why they do the things they do, Humans talk about gut instinct. )

Last night after work I went upstairs to wait for The Boy, and was attempting to be a Good and Quiet Person because our CEO (...well, he's not really the CEO anymore since the crazy buy-out over the summer, but he's the highest-ranking guy in our building and he's still the CEO in my head) sits just a few desks away from him. (Yeah, I know, how awesome is that? My fiance sits right by the CEO! But gloating over that isn't actually the point of this story.)

The point of this story is that while I was waiting for The Boy to finish a few things up, my phone rang.

See, a while ago I thought "I need a new ring-tone." And it just so happened that this was after we'd just finished BSG. ...You can imagine what happened. Spoilers for plot significant music cue in season 4 of BSG ) Anyway, I love my stealth-geek ring-tone. But of course, all I'm thinking at that moment is "perfectly silent office, almost everybody's gone, CEO trying to work, god damn it, why can't I find my phone?" Eventually I got it, called [livejournal.com profile] miss_arel back briefly, and hung up... whereupon my phone, which had apparently decided it hadn't embarrassed me enough that evening, rang again, this time for no apparent reason. AHHHH!

Today, The Boy tells me he ran into the CEO in the office.

CEO smiles at him. And says, "So, is your girlfriend a Cylon?"

I admit - when he told me this, I squealed. I've worked for this company for almost four years without attracting the slightest attention from the CEO. If there is going to be only one thing he connects me with, I can stand that being it. ♥

Gmail regards a conversation about BSG as a good time to show ads for... the Android phone.

Context, Google. You do understand it. Sort of.

At least it wasn't one of the image ads with the red eye-light...
rivendellrose: (end of the world)
You know that thing when you've finally dragged yourself out of a few weeks of not being able to write anything, and you've managed to write most of a story, but then when you get to where the end ought to be you just sort of keep staring blankly at the screen, twiddling with dialogue that goes absolutely nowhere, and vaguely feeling like you should probably just give up and have the ship explode or something?

Yeah, that's about where I am right now.

Writing woes! These characters hate me and I can't particularly blame them! And some spoilers for BSG, given, well, those are the characters that hate me. )

In short: Somebody please tell the characters hanging out in my head to play nicely?

Time to get back to work. Only one and a half days until the new office. ♥

I know it's wrong on a number of levels, but I really want someone to make a BSG vid to Jonathan Coulton's "Chiron Beta Prime."

Seriously. I dare you to listen to that song with that in mind and not giggle. It has so much potential for hilarious wrongness...

Oh, look, my fonts folder finally loaded - back to work...
rivendellrose: (tease)
You know how when you go to the grocery store (or, worse, the drug store...), you sometimes catch yourself looking at the collection of items that you're purchasing and thinking "god, I hope the cashier doesn't pay attention to the image all this paints together" (like when you buy, I don't know, vaseline, eyeshadow, lipstick, and chewing gum? All for innocent purposes! But together it looks like you're thinking about making a really scary porno, which... is totally not really my point, but is perhaps somewhat related, tangentially)? Well, over the course of this weekend I bought:

Books
Mystic Cults in Magna Graecia
Sacred Space: The Quest for Transcendence in Science Fiction Film and Television
The Myth of the Goddess: Evolution of an Image

Music
Battlestar Galactica soundtrack: Season 3
Battlestar Galactica soundtrack: Season 4
Wailin' Jennies - Firecracker
Marian Call - Got to Fly

Gee, I wonder what picture all of that paints when put together. I'm not subconsciously (and over-academically) gearing up for a post-NaNo fic-writing binge... no, not at all...

g.i.p.

Went icon-hunting this afternoon, as a break from NaNo. Newest fandom now much more properly represented.

I feel better, now.

It's been a very big 24 hours for BSG in our household - last night we settled in with pizza and wine to watch the whole extended cut of Daybreak (and a number of the little extended features on the making of the series, afterward), and then today we went to Seattle's adorable little Sci-Fi Museum and Hall of Fame to see the special exhibit on BSG, which opened last month but which we've been waiting patiently to go see until we'd finished the series.

Spoilers for the whole series, and some photos from the exhibit, beneath the cut! )
rivendellrose: (six)
Getting waaaaaaaaaay too close to the end of the series for my comfort, and we seem to be gaining more and more questions rather than answering them, which makes me wonder if the last episode isn't going to just be 50 minutes of the writers scrambling to clear things up... or, you know, totally not.

'Islanded in a Sea of Stars' )

In other news, hormones are evil, and I hate them. I really wish my mood would stop taking sudden veers toward random free-floating panic and/or depression. And I wouldn't mind if I didn't have to keep taking ibuprofen every few hours, either. Stupid hormones. Can't I just put my uterus and all other associated bits in a box until I'm ready to use them?

Behind on NaNo for the first time this year, as I got busy with household stuff once I got home last night. Been letting things slip a bit over the last week, so I had to play catch-up, and by the time I finished up The Boy was home and I felt too sleepy and lazy and not-wanting-to-work to go lock myself in the office, so... surprise... we watched more BSG.

'Someone to Watch Over Me' )

Time to get back to work. Sigh.
rivendellrose: (fierce)
Okay. The last few episodes have been awesome.

'The Oath' through 'Deadlock' )

Also, I've finally given up on avoiding IMDB and went there last night because The Boy was talking about something that Alessandro Juliani (sp?) was in, and... I've just spent four seasons confused about the names... of two of my favorite minor characters. *Headdesk* It's not my fault that Tamoh looks kind of like a girl's name... *>_>* No need to shame me, I assure you that I feel quite silly for the whole thing. Aaaaaanyway....
