For a minute I read that as "thongs," and I, too, was very... curious.
(Random thought: I was rereading The Hobbit a few weeks ago, just for the hell of it, and there's this lovely little line... in which the elves "put the dwarves in thongs."
Oh, Professor Tolkien... I know what you meant, but the mental images you just left me scarred with... they'll never go away. ♥)
Ahh... good times with Tolkien. Almost as good as reading his translation of Gawain and the Green Knight and getting to (entirely truthfully) shout down the stairs at one of my housemates, "KARI - PROFESSOR TOLKIEN IS WRITING BONDAGE!!!"
