Still more BSG.

First off, I knew from
icepixie that Nana Visitor would be showing up sometime in the fourth season, but I was utterly unprepared for how completely gobsmacked I'd be to see her again - I haven't actually seen her in anything since my days as a bitty geek absolutely idolizes her as Kira in DS9, so it was bizarrely affecting to see her in this. Lovely performance - she and Mary played so well off each other, and I was heartbroken that Emily died so soon. Inevitable from a story standpoint, but still very sad.
And it was a very good thing that we had a nice, slow, contemplative plot like that running against the madness over on the Demetrius, because whooooooo boy was that a lot to take in.
First off, Sam? Please do not be shooting out people's knee-caps. This is not acceptable behavior! I realize you're Starbuck's husband and you spend a lot of time around her, but I just last week went over how it is not okay for her to be randomly cold-cocking people and threatening Roslin with a gun. And now you're doing it, too? Except WORSE? WTF? Poor Gaeta! Poor, poor, poor Gaeta! o_O I have been told there are some webisodes we need to see (which we will have much better access to soon, as our internet provider is being changed this very afternoon so that we may, with luck, actually have the level of service we pay for) in which he's made out to be rather a less pleasant person than we might have thought previously, but dude. Unless he's smothering puppies for fun, I'm having a hard time picturing getting his knee blown out by Sam for pretty much no reason as fair. (...And if he is smothering puppies or something, don't tell me. ...Or, you know, maybe do tell me if it's that, because that way I can just refuse to watch the webisodes. But other than that, don't tell me, because we should be finding out in good time.)
That said, I am glad that Sam accepted my brainwaves of "so help me, if you blow out Helo or Sharon's kneecaps I will hate you forever, you bastard" to heart, and did no further damage after capping Gaeta. So, that's good. In fact, he's bizarrely sympathetic half an hour later when the Centurion kills one of the Eights - poor Sharon can't cope with holding her 'sister's' hand while she dies, so he does it. Guilt over shooting Gaeta? More sympathy for a woman than for a man? Bizarre quid pro quo for how Six saved him from a moral dilemma later in the episode by blasting her own 'sister's' brains out for killing the random sergeant girl? Or just starting to sympathize more with his Cylon brethren?
I loved Sam being drawn to the wet-works of the Cylon ship. Oh, dear. That's a very understandable moment right there.
Speaking of the random sergeant girl, it was way too obvious that she was going to die. Right as they're climbing into the Raptor, she's all "don't worry, I don't care what you do, I've always believed in you" to Starbuck. Hello, death sentence. *Sigh*
And Six killing 'herself.' As The Boy has pointed out several times, it's always Six when there is Cylon-on-Cylon violence going on. Because she's just scary like that.
The other Eights certainly don't seem to have much in the way of the passion and determination that Boomer and Athena did, do they? Wiiiimps. I'm not quite of the "you don't ever change sides, ever," attitude that Athena espouses, but I definitely see where she's coming from, and it's a decent philosophy for at least some situations.
Loved loved loved the real starscape with the big gas giant and the base-ship-as-comet melting into Starbuck's painting - that was a beautiful moment. Absolutely stunning.
Loved how the Centurion shot Eight to try to keep her from unplugging the Hybrid, and everybody had to kill it together. Gee, guys, that might be the problem with giving your creations sentient thought - sometimes they're going to disagree with you! And if they can't speak, and you've built guns into their hands, well, how the hell do you think they're going to communicate?
And of course the arrival of the Raptor and the base ship seconds after the count-down is finished was waaaaay too predictable, but I forgive them because what the hell else are they going to do? That's just the way that's meant to go!
I also notice that the title of the next episode is "Guess What's Coming to Dinner?" :D Yes, I'm sure Adama and the rest of the fleet will be just thrilled when Our Heroes return in a giant fricking half-destroyed base-ship that's asking for a truce. I'm sure that will be a very popular thing.
Current bet on the Final Fifth: I've worked myself down to Roslin as the most reasonable and best-for-the-story option, but I'm not either very sold or very certain on this. Not sure. I'm just along for the ride.
