So, I registered for next Autumn's classes today, and I'm really looking forward to them.

I knew I had to take a class on American lit previous to 1917, so I signed up for Late 19th century American Lit (my favorite period in lit). Then Late 19th century English novel, because it looks fabulously fun - the theme is Individuality, and we're reading a section of J.S. Mill's On Liberty, Carrol's Alice Through the Looking Glass, capitalist and Darwinian theories, Middlemarch, and a few interesting-sounding short stories, among others.

Lastly, my honors seminar. There were a bunch of choices, several of which sounded interesting... but one that I just couldn't pass up. I'll just post the course description, since it's fairly short:

The Devil. This course will examine a variety of religious texts, literary works and political discourses which have informed, and been informed by, the Prince of Darkness. Possible topics include the Hebrew, pre-Christian, early Christian, and pagan influences on the evolution of this character, the iconography associated with Satan, treatment of the Devil in works of fiction, and portrayals of the Devil in popular culture.

*Crosses fingers* I wasn't able to register for that one quite yet, since I didn't remember to get my add-code from the honors department today. But I'm hoping.

OOoohhh, how quickly do the Honors seminare fill up? Better hurray, I will enjoy any discussions that would come up from what you read in that class!!!!
In other news, Kaylee and I have made a date to go and see Van Helsing Sunday, the 15th, I've told her what you said about it and we're looking forward to the slliness and all the pretty men, YAY!!!

Devilish fun

Good luck getting into the Devil class! That sounds like a real enjoying and interesting topic.

I saw Van Helsing a couple days ago. Agree with most everything you said about it. Much prettiness, but I didn't care for the excessive camp. David Wenham *was* good in his part. I did love the distended jaw thing they did with the vampires, though. Also saw Hellboy. Now that's entertainment. Very amusing.

Can't wait for Troy. It looks like they're leaving the gods out of it entirely, but at least there should be plenty of quality violence.

Then there's the pretty factor....

Ooh, interesting classes. John Stuart Mill is quite interesting, we read him for my freshman seminar. I would squee more, but I'm currently nursing a deep hatred of english, due to my final paper. Good luck with the Devil seminar too, seems like that would be very interesting.

Lol - final papers will definitely do that to a person. I'm sure I'll be bemoaning my choice of major in a few weeks, too.

Mill is fun, isn't he? I read a bit this last fall, and more before that, in US History... it's good stuff.

Good luck with the final paper!

Yeah, finals do not inspire much love. I'm currently hating English (for being hard), Italian (for having too many tenses), Astronomy (for involving physics) and Russia (for having too much goddamn history). My room is also on the hate list for being too hot to study in.

But I'm sure next week I'll be back to my usual cheerful self! ;D

NO FAIR! I want to see Hellboy, but can't find anyone who wants to go see it with me. I guess I could go and see it by myself, but that doesn't seem near as fun-Kathleen, why don't you still live around here???

I so totally hear you on the English and Astronomy - I cleared my science requirements with basic Astro courses and I was always having to beg math help from my roommate. God bless science majors - I may not understand them, but I love when they help me with homework.

Whee!

Not sure about Troy... I really kind of want to go, but I'm such an amazing wimp when it comes to battle scenes... And I keep laughing every time I see Orlando Bloom as Paris, so I'm sort of afraid I'll get mauled by the fangirls. ;) And yet, Sean Bean as Odysseus might be worth it all...

Hellboy, hm? Suppose I should try to see that one - I heard it's massively depressing, though.

It's out, sadly - no more spaces left when I got there. *pouts* But I got a women's lit class instead.

LOL. I would love to see Hellboy with you! Too bad I don't live closer. I was actually planning on applying again to the UW for graduate school. I'm planning to go for my Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing after this next year, but UW specifically says that they aren't interested in people who write genre fiction. *grumble grumble* Most places aren't incredibly eager for a genre fiction applicant, but at least they've encouraged me to apply.

Going to movies alone does suck, but Hellboy's definately worth seeing (in my humble opinion). I don't think it'll be in the theatres much longer though. Maybe you can rent it when it comes out.

Yes, Orlando was the pretty boy of middle earth (albeit with bad-ass archery skills), and now he shall be the pretty boy of Troy. hee hee. Nope, no risk of type casting there. I've been kind of disappointed with the previews, I know Odysseus wasn't a *huge* player in the novel, but they haven't shown Sean Bean at all in the commercials. I do think, though, that I heard his voice in one.

Hellboy is depressing? I thought it was a lot of fun. Much with the dry sarcasm. I've heard that some of the overall story arc of the graphic novel is a little dour, but I thought the movie was just enjoyable.

I had also heard that it was a fun movie!
