Dear friend,
Congress is about to vote on amending the U.S. Constitution to deny marriage equality to same-sex couples.
Never before has our Constitution been amended to take away anyone's rights. Yet our Senators will vote on this amendment in the next 48 hours.
It's urgent that we speak up now. This hateful divisiveness has no place in America. Please join me in saying so, at:

Equality in marriage is the civil rights issue of our generation. We can't let anyone, or any group, be singled out for discrimination based on who they are or who they love.
Thank you.

ursule pointed out, Prohibition should count as a previous time when the US Gov't has amended the constitution to take away people's rights. So we have alcohol, and marriage. Wheee. Of course, they repealed that one when it became clear that you can't keep people from drinking - unfortunately, you can't make moonshine marriage licenses, can you?
Anyway, so they missed a little in their research. It's still a worthy fight.

Date: 2004-07-12 05:51 pm (UTC)Ah, good, went through on the second try.
Don't forget that if it manages to get through Congress, it still has to be ratified by 3/4ths of the states. Think it would survive that bit?

I'm not saying that I think it definitely will get through, or even that it's likely that it would get through. I am saying that it's frustrating and disturbing, however, and that I wish people as a whole would grow up.

Date: 2004-07-12 09:11 pm (UTC)They finally deleted my account. Figures. I've been waiting for them to do it for ages. Still, means I can't leave signed reviews. Rather annoying. Shall sign up with PSA asap.
Go to Canadia land. They have less murders and there's still anime, cats, and Harry Potter fanfiction. Everything a person needs.

Date: 2004-07-12 10:39 pm (UTC)Yeah, Canada's a possibility, definitely. As are the UK and New Zealand - it can't be any place too hot, and they have to speak English, so I'm a bit limited. My French is just soooo not up to me actually living somewhere with that as the primary language, and I don't think I'm up to learning another language, either.

Date: 2004-07-12 11:11 pm (UTC)I think you can get by in most other countries speaking English, but people will resent you for it.
Do you know anything about politics in Spain? My friend is thinking of hopping onto a plane at the end of her lest year of high school and going there. I think that might be a bit young to make such a huge switch, but any info you know would be useful.

Date: 2004-07-13 12:27 pm (UTC)No, I don't, sadly. I'm sure there are plenty of travel books and the like, though, that would have information on the politics there. Or she could try to meet people from there online and ask them!
