a sort of PSA
Aug. 3rd, 2004 05:07 pmNo pity. No shame. No silence.
I've never been a victim of sexual violence, thank the gods. I am, however, intensely acquainted the fear of it, and the way it can limit one's life. I'm afraid to walk alone at night, to go out with guys I don't know very well, to wait for a bus alone, or even, at times, to be alone in my own home. Now, I'm a naturally fearful person, so this is not entirely society's fault. But I stand by my conviction that we are not a free or enlightened society until all people are safe to go where they will, when they will, whering what they will, without fear of being violated or attacked.
To all the people who've stepped up and spoken about their experiences today, I applaud you for your courage, and I pray that you regain the peace and confidence that was taken.
