Today's kind of a half-ass good day, so far. I woke up on time, was feeling pretty good despite not getting a whole ton of sleep, the cat was being really sweet and snuggly if slightly obnoxious, and I skipped putting my makeup on (why do it at home when I can just as well use time here that I'd otherwise be bored?) so I could eat breakfast! Who cares that I couldn't find my brand new pink Mary Kay lipstick that would go perfectly with the shirt I'm wearing today... Okay, so I was a bit bitter about that. But anyway.

Cut to the trip to campus. I'm holding my nice big travel mug of vanilla chai tea, because I like to have tea to sip while reading first thing in the morning. The cup slides out of my hand, spilling all over me. What fun.

And, finally... The basics, first - It was a beach, it was pretty, there was no shade whatsoever, meaning that I am as close as I've ever been to having a tan (which those who know me by sight will realize is a pretty shocking state for me). No, I don't like it. I want my normal paleness back, damn it. I also learned that you can sunburn your feet if you wear sandals for a week in the sun (ow), and that burying said burned feet in sand to get them away from the sun, while a clever thought, is really painful.

Other than that... it was a week with my dad's family. I know - it should be nice to spend lots of time with them, since I've hardly seen them except on Christmas visits back home for the last four years, and it's great that we were all able to get together to go camping, despite distance and what-have-you. And sometimes it was honestly fun - like tormenting the older of my two stepbrothers for his big fish stories, and visiting a WW2 bunker with my cousins and stepbrothers... and realizing that, at almost 22, I could be considered the "responsible adult" of the group if some island policeman cought us being goony. Eep. Chatting with my oldest cousin (almost 18, and, gods bless her, considering NOT going to Brigham Young University) was fun, especially when we realized that a meteor shower was going right above us. And my grandpa and I continue to find things to talk about that interest us both - a surprising fact, at times, considering that my grandma and I might as well be from different planets. Of course, she and my stepmom get along perfectly - added fodder for the "Jen feels like a stranger in her own family" complaint.

Still. I am not going to make this sound like it was torture, because it wasn't. I got along with everyone, my stepmom only pissed me off twice (and I managed to hide it both times), and the short (and VERY wake-filled!) boat outing with my dad was quite worth it, as was wading in bath-water warm low-tide water watching baby fish and hermit crabs. I got my yearly dose of wood-smoke, too, and my annual reminder that running hot water is a miracle, and all was happy.

Especially the coming-home part. ;)
