In case anyone is interested, this is Ursula K. Leguin's reaction to the miniseries bearing the name of "Earthsea."
I've met Ms. Leguin once, at a panel on the Clarion West conferences held here in Seattle every summer; she's an amazing woman. Her books are fabulous, and she's exactly the kind of sparkling, brassy, wonderfully intelligent woman who doesn't deserve this kind of shit from producers.
Just think if they had gotten Phillipa Boyens like they'd said they did, and made it full-length like they'd said they were going to... now that would've been an amazing thing to see. If only because I'd love to see what she and Phillipa could have done, working together.

Date: 2004-12-17 09:56 am (UTC)I haven't read the books in a very long time, so I wasn't offended by the changes to the story, but I also wasn't expecting it to stick too close to the books anyway, it IS a sci fi channel thing. They make entertaining stuff, but not very deep for the most part.
It has however made me want to go find the books again and re-read them to get the real story. And I haven't wanted to read any fantasy books in a long time, so that's something.
But it was pretty well done, and was an enjoyable watch.
