Dear friends-list:

Please stop it with the "DO NOT READ" meme. If I see something labelled "Do Not Read" I will, miraculously, not read. I will also assume you are wangsting and have forgotten how to use the "private" or "custom-friends-locked" functions. If the point is to find the friends who will read it.... I'm not one of them. Plus, it makes me go "What the fuck is up with people today?" until I figure out that it's a meme.

Dear world:

Please give me my left ear back. I've very tired of it being plugged all the time.

Kari and I spent waaaaaaaaaay too much time talking about random shit last night. It was fun. Topics of conversation (as I remember) included politics, religion, Highlander and a very bored Methos attempting to freak out Richie by coming on to him, our characters at IB, and how we'd like to someday play late-teenaged Lucius, Bellatrix, and Rodolphus as the Anti-Trio. And, somewhere in there, how we plan on writing an essay on why het is a Good Thing sometimes, and why some canon het pairings just shouldn't be fucked with.

Pretty much. And that's saying a lot, on the internet.... ;)

Ooh, I want to read that. And then show it to the people who were bitching about (what passes for) canon het on Good to Be in DC.

Het is good. Slash is good. What gets me are people who seem to be of the feeling that only slash is ever worthwhile, and if you write or draw het you are boring and stupid, or something.

I'm sorry, folks - I'm a straight female. I frequently like to see male characters get together with women. *Gasp* Especially if those women happen to be (*more gasp*) written or drawn or conceived of as Realistic People, rather than stick-figure models with perfect everything. And if it's a canon relationship that is shown in canon as happy... for god's sake, leave it alone, please. That's not so much a problem in HP fandom as it apparently is in some others, but it just irks me.

Nice icon, by the way!

Yes! Exactly! We had this on Good to Be in DC, because there were new people who joined and people who took up new characters (specifically John Kerry, Teresa Heinz and John and Elizabeth Edwards). There was het and slash and some of the old people were all "OMGWTF HET? EEEEEEEW"

*headdesk*

I hate the destroying of the happy canon relationships. Probably why reading post-RoTK fic where people break up Aragorn and Arwen or Eowyn and Faramir bugs me so much. I just don't get it.

And thanks! I wish I could say I made it, but I got it from [livejournal.com profile] octoberine

That's so sad. I'm all for the fact that homosexual relationships are accepted in fic and fan-art - that's lovely. But the fact that people have gone the opposite direction and now discriminate against artwork and fiction portraying heterosexual pairings just drives me nuts.

I can't understand at all why people would want to break up those relationships. Yeah, sometimes I kind of think that Eowyn and Aragorn would've been a good couple, but that's not what happened, and, Liv Tyler aside, I like Arwen, and I certainly like Faramir. It's just stupid to go along and break up canon relationships just for the hell of it.

It really is. People need to understand that refusing to accept heterosexual pairings is every bit as bad as refusing to accept homosexual pairings. Discrimination is discrimination. Period.

Eowyn and Aragorn might have worked, but people should really just deal with the fact that it didn't turn out that way. I remember one fic that got sporked on [livejournal.com profile] deleterius that had Eowyn begging Legolas for sex because Faramir was impotent and she didn't really love him anyway. I almost cried. It was bad.

o.O No. I'm sorry, there are so many things wrong with that summary... Holy fecking crap. For one... yes she did! She totally loved him!!! And... dear sweet gods, why Legolas???? Why? Because teenage fangirls are insane, that's why!

Oh, this wasn't a teenager. I believe that was a fic by the infamous ZeeDrippyVessel, who, IIRC, is in her 30s and has a son.

That story was one of the most God-awful pieces of shite I've ever had the misfortune to lay eyes on.

Oh dear. That's just sad. You kind of expect that adults who write fic will at least be slightly more mature than the usual teenybopper twit.

You'd expect that, yes. This woman was just sad. Absolutely one of the least mature people I've ever encountered. All of her fics were awful, and it's not that they were badly written, it's just that they were massively OOC. And full of purple prose and bad Elf!pr0n. Every time one showed up on deleterius, Zee and her sockpuppets would follow, foaming at the mouth(s). It was just sad.

I don't know, exactly - out of pure anti-contrariness I've refused to click any of them, so all I know is that a bunch of people have been posting LJ-cuts where the tag simply reads "DO NOT READ."

I think the idea is basically most people (like me) can't resist clicking links they've been told not to. It's the red button syndrome. So this meme is testing to see how many people will click the link. Then they have to comment admitting that they clicked and post the link in their journal. It's your basic mindless meme.

(and yes I admit I went and looked up the meme on your flist because there haven't been any on mine and I wanted to know what the deal was.)

*Laughs* I figured it was something like that. For once, I manage to restrain my curiosity!

I only really like memes if they offer some sort of information about the person that is unique and interesting. Or, you know, if they're random stupid fandom shit. ;)

Why the heck is your left ear so plugged lately? Is that the one you had the problems with before you went to Hawaii?
Maybe you should get it checked.

It's the same one, yeah, but it seems to be related to air pressure - I think it gets plugged when the weather changes. It's not painful, just kind of irritating, and once the plugging goes away, my hearing's fine.
