Computer is definitely getting reformatted as soon as I get my hands on a copy of XP and manage to copy over all my files to data CDs so I don't lose anything. She needs it. She's been running too damned long without a reformatting.

In other news, this means that most of my online time will now be at work or school, because I can't leave IE open, which means signing into everything each and every time I need to do something. And I'm doing most of my schoolwork here on campus as well, too, because I'm afraid to open important files at home right now. So... yeah. No big deal, just a bit frustrating sometimes.

Seeing as how she will be getting a completely new brain and operating system and all, I'm considering giving Claire a new name, as well - as a way of starting completely fresh, you might say. So, I open the question to you, my friends-list - what shall I name my computer this time?

As a bit of background, I prefer mythological/literary names - "Claire" is the slightly bitchy and self-righteous main character in a series of very fun modern fantasy books by Tanya Huff. So the best options will be something like that... I'm not stuck on gender, but I want something with meaning for me. And anyone who suggests a name like "Loki" or "Puck" will be summarily raspberried. There's no way I'm tempting fate like that. ;)

Clio - the Muse of (history?)...maybe the papers will get written faster!

I would say Pandora but that would probably get me smacked...

Nimitz - the treecat in the Honor Harrington series by David Weber - empathetic hexapod, fiercely loyal, bonds for life to a human.

Clio, huh? Hmm... I like that one. Pandora is a cute one - I like a quasi-feminist reading of Pandora, taking the view that life wouldn't be what it was if it weren't for curiosity that brings out the unpleasant realities of the world, and retains hope.

I've never read David Weber - might have to look him up, over the summer.

Speaking for myself, I named my computer Achernar, after the star. This was because, like it's namesake, the comp is a red giant (huge full-size blood-red case) and alos, Achernar is very cool in comparison to other stars. And running cool is always a good trait to inspire in one's computer. XD

As such, perhaps name your comp after a star you like, or perhaps a constellation?

Perhaps....Sirius? *duck*

Ooo, good point... I'll have to look at the names of the stars in Orion, or perhaps just "Orion" itself. I've always loved that constellation.

*snorts* Right, 'cause I really want my computer behaving like a spazzy teenager... ;)

Good names for a computer:

Pallas Athena (she actually *was* a computer in Heinlein).

Mira (the librarian who restored Memory Alpha in a Star Trek episode. Also, a red giant star).

Bellatrix (yes, I know, but it's also the female warrior star in Orion)

Penthesileia (Amazon queen in the Homeric cycle).

Camilla (Amazon in the Aeneid).

Bradamante (lady knight in Orlando Furioso).

Belphoebe/Belphegor (another lady knight from the Amadis de Gaula cycle).

Caterina (Caterina Sforza, the virago of Imoli, led her own troops against Cesare Borgia).

Louise (Louise Labe, 16th century French poet who fought at the battle of Calais).

Hope this isn't too many....

Bradamante! I haven't thought of her in ages, but I adore her. Mira and Penthesilia are also good, and I'm going to have to look up Caterina and Louise - whether or not I rename the computer after them, I'd love to know more about those two!

There's no such thing as too many names - I'm such a complete name nerd.

Fey, computers acting like Hex are a bad thing. Very bad. I don't think we have enough ants.

ermmm...I'm sure that re-naming the computer Methos is probably not necessary a good idea, but....an idea.
Joe??? Joe is kind, intelligent, easy going. I still sort of like the Methos idea though.

Wow, that's a hell of a mental image. "Joe, would you - don't freeze up, Joe! Joe, what the hell do you think you're doing?!"

You've heard me talk to Claire. I think I'd feel rude talking to Joe that way.... XD Although I've certainly mentally divorced computer!Claire from book!Claire... I can't picture book!Claire being as spazzy as computer!Claire.
