I'm alive, really. It's just been a very busy week.

Classes are going well. I love my English Language study class--it's essentially linguistics for English majors, and I'm fascinated by it. It'll probably kick my ass once we start actually getting into the stuff, but I'm totally enthralled. And I'm tempted to take Old English next quarter, if this goes well. It's the closest UW offers to Gaelic, the language I've always dreamed of learning.

Oceanography is a delight, although the prof kind of rushes through stuff. All the stuff I learned in Astro 150 is coming in handy, as is what I picked up from my two quarters as operator for Geology 101. And the literary theory class is really interesting, although the reading is already turning out kind of evil. Such long, complicated, hard-to-figure-out sentences! But I seem to be getting through it as well or better than my fellow students, so I figure I'm in good shape. And it's a pre-req if I want to graduate with Honors... which I've officially been offered!

Work has been going well, too, and they seem to be doing their best to give me a decent number of hours, for which I'm very grateful.

Now, the real news. Tonight, I saw Phantom of the Opera at the Paramount, for only the second time ever. It was beautiful. The actor playing the Phantom had the most astonishingly lovely voice at times, although I disliked his interpretation of the character at other moments--he was working to bring out the tragedy and weakness of the character, where I'm used to a different take. I don't appreciate a whining, sobbing Phantom... at least not *this* much. Christine (despite her tendency to pronounce Raoul as "Rowl"), Carlotta, and the Managers were quite lovely, the costumes and sets amazing, the dances beautiful, the orchestra fabulous. Raoul was the weak link--flat in places, and taking the character entirely too seriously, from what I saw. He ruined a few very good moments.

Also, perhaps it's just that I'm used to the British pronunciation in the original cast... but the American pronunciation of "ask" just is not appealing when held out and sung. I could have sworn that was something my singing teachers always taught me... but, ah well. It was still lovely. Not quite so magical as it once felt, but I sure as hell understood it a lot better this time, and I had a wonderful night.

I hope you are all well!
