continuing at a snail's pace...
Aug. 26th, 2011 02:30 pm30 days of fanfic meme, days 5-7. Yeah, I'm cheating a bit. I'm so far behind that if I don't, I'll never catch up.
5 –If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?
Ohyes. Yes, I definitely have. The most egregious was Dukhat (B5), who not only took over my brain for a Day of the Dead alternate scene, but also insisted that he wanted to have a chat with Sheridan, forcing me to write Where No Shadows Fall. I can't complain - the latter is still one of my favorite fics that I've written. It's probably not among my best technical pieces, but I had a lot of fun with it, and I still enjoy some of the ideas that came up. In short, if a character insists on pushing themselves into a fic, I let them. The results are always more interesting than whatever I had planned, anyway, and I enjoy letting the characters do whatever they want.
6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?
I probably have a preference for writing female characters, judging by my track record, but I enjoy both. I pick characters based on whether I like them and how much they interest me, not based on gender.
7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
I assume this means the process of writing my own fic, not reading someone else's (in which case the answer would still be "yes, definitely," but for a different reason). It's definitely happened a few times - I think the process of writing a character is always going to change how one views that character. They become a person. Layers show up that you weren't expecting, you think about them in a different way. That definitely happened to me with... oh, Narcissa Black, John Sheridan, Leoben Conoy. Probably a few others I've forgotten, as well. I get very attached to characters I write, even the nasty ones.
