chasing "the lord of the rings"
May. 18th, 2005 01:25 pmOkay... I know one of these damned books had a big thing on how the interaction and portrayals of Gondorian and Rohirrim culture mirrored that of classical Rome and the Germanic tribes. Now, why is it that I can't find the damned passage???
Overslept this morning (I blame the cat) and felt like crap when I finally got up, so I stayed home from archaeology. Many apologies to Toby, who recieved what might have been a rather incoherent call letting him know I wouldn't be in class. I'm feeling a bit better now, although still not fabulous. And still having a damned hard time getting any actual work done. I did my readings for anthropology, though.
I now need to get back to tearing my room apart in an attempt to find the last of the Lord of the Rings books. I must be missing one, because I fecking remember reading that passage in my research. Next time I'm writing something like this and not taking notes or at least bookmarking pages as I do my initial readings, I hope someone is kind enough to slap some sense into me.
Edit: And why the hell didn't it occur to me earlier that 'narrative nonfiction' might be the right field for me? Other than because it didn't really occur to me that it was a field, obviously... And because the only classes in it are through the UW Extension program. But I can work with that! At least I think I can.... *ponders*

Date: 2005-05-18 11:46 pm (UTC)What's the market for that kind of work, though? It's a place where writers fear to tread. It's not hack work, but it takes the research and legwork of a good reporter. What would you write about?
Oh, and P.S., I'm getting fed up with the absence of relevant local media. It seems like there is a viewpoint for everybody but the people I know. As a solution, I'm going to try to put together a zine. Perhaps your venture into creative non-fiction would fly well there?

Date: 2005-05-19 12:57 am (UTC)Hmm, I actually dread/hate journalism and lean more toward a sort of... essay-writing or book-writing kind of style (ie, I hate writing about 'current events') but it might be something to consider. Depends heavily on what you're looking for in terms of subjects, I guess.
