Sooooooo.... it looks like I'm hopefully going to the ocean for a few days this weekend with [livejournal.com profile] narsilion!

I didn't even know it was a possibility until Tuesday night, and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to go because of my work-load with an essay due Monday night, but it looks like I ought to be able to make it work. There's a computer there, it has a USB port... so I ought to be able to work on my paper while I'm there, and still be able to walk the beach and stuff! So we'll probably be leaving late-ish (9 or so?) on Friday evening, and coming back Sunday in the afternoon... as I have no work Sunday night! Yay!

I'm so relieved by all of this - it'll be nice to just get away for a bit, have a change of scenery for a few days before the final plunge of trying to get everything done for the last week of classes and then finals. I'll miss spending time with the roommates and the Theo-kitty (eeep... I know it's just a few days, but I hate being away from my monster-kitten), but it'll be nice to spend some time with Mom where I'm not so exhausted that I feel like just passing out, or so stressed that I'm going back and forth between shrieking and crying. Heh. At least I hope I won't be. ;)

Oi, let me forget about getting feeding instructions for the kitty from you. Unless you want him to go on the starvation diet. =P

XD

No, no - no starvation for kitty. If you wouldn't mind, I'd say he could probably use someone filling his bowl every evening, and if he's really fussy in the morning he might need a bit extra... he's really variable about how long it takes him to get through a bowl, so I usually just check in the morning and evening. I'm going to clean his box and put new sand in it on Friday night before we leave, so hopefully that won't be a problem. He's never gone without it being cleaned for more than a single day, but he's only one cat, so I figure it probably won't be too bad.

"as I have no work Sunday night! Yay!" and hopefully no school monday, so that you would have even more time to work on said essay?

Oooh, I love the ocean. Can I come too? Please! ...actually, they'll need someone to run sounds and calling blocking for the drama rehearsal Sunday. Why don't I just go in your place? That's the easiest thing to do.

*Laughs* I miss theater, but I've never run a light board before - they might not be too pleased to have me instead of you! What's the production?

Hopefully I'll be able to take a few pictures, at least... *Makes note to actually pack camera*

It's Wildest Dreams by Alan Ayckburn. Except for the first time since I've been at Nova, it actually looks like a highschool production. The play is in... 5 days and they still don't know all their lines. We haven't once made it through a complete run-through... even when we have 3 hours to rehearse. Yeah.

Two of the actors might be dropping out at the last minute, but we've got a double cast because there were too many people who auditioned, so it's okay. The director kinda regrets making that decision now.

Eeep. I've had shows like that... it's a nightmare, but they usually manage to pull it together at the last minute. How often do you rehearse over the next five days? Have you tried just a line-through and then a full run? Sometimes once people get their dialogue really firm, they can concentrate more easily on everything else. Another answer, with only five days left, is to just keep them going no matter what happens. At a certain point, you just have to refuse to let them stop for anything less than a serious injury. Force them to get through it, and they'll learn to do it.

I've never liked the double-cast convention, myself, but I know a lot of highschool shows feel like they have to do it. It does tend to make the rehearsal process a lot messier, though, and neither cast comes out as strong as they might have been with the full time and attention devoted to them.

We've got one full run through with Cast B today. Then a full run through with Cast A tomorrow. Then Tuesday we're doing the tech in the theatre and cast B is showing up to do a run through for tech (read-not really rehearsal but maybe enough to keep it fresh in their minds). Wednesday Cast A gets a dress rehearsal in the afternoon and the performance in the evening. Thursday same thing with Cast B. Cast B seems to be looking better than they were a few days ago, but I'll have a pretty good idea in a couple hours what the performance is going to be like.

We have been trying to force them to rehearse, but when they just don't show up and wont answer phones there isn't a lot we can do. Plus one of them has been in and out of the hospital with some sort of medical condition. He says he's relatively sure he can perform on Tuesday though. Friday he had to sit down and just read his lines for most of his part.

That's scary, especially the one with the medical condition. We had one guy, once, who had to drop out of the performance something like two weeks before opening because he had a massive fever. Thank god we were able to call in a guy who'd graduated the year before to take his place, or we'd have been in a real bind.

I can't believe people who just don't show up. Granted, theater ate my whole life when I was in highschool, but I just can't imagine committing to something like that and then, the week before performances, just disappearing.

Other than one scene (the last scene in the first act), it actually looked pretty good today. Though the costume changes were a disater, but hopefully they worked out the bugs. Though the fact that the scene that's falling appart is the one that people are going to be thinking about when they decide whether to leave during intermission is a little troubling. I think it'll be okay.

I wish I'd been in drama all these years. It's so much fun seeing everything come together--even with things being as bad as they are at this point. Up until this year, I've only done projects for drama as extras because they didn't have anyone else.

Yeck. Well, costume changes are usually the hardest bit, especially if this is the first full dress rehearsal you've had. Gods, I remember when we did "The Sound of Music," every single costume change for the leads was a nightmare. We had to have folks backstage ready to help Maria and Captain Von Trapp with their costumes, especially for the wedding and competition scenes. I'm sure it'll work out - it always looks the worst for that week before performances start!

It's really an amazing experience. I did something like fifteen shows through highschool, and every single one was such a learning experience.
