Aug. 1st, 2005 10:57 amNames have been changed to protect the presumably-innocent denizens of a nonetheless totally creepy town with which I am acquainted.
Title: "A Brief Detour"
Fandom: X-Files
Warnings: None
Notes: Mulder and Scully are traveling, and take a wrong turn. They end up in a place that goes a bit beyond the usual. This is just me being silly, and I'm not saying a damned thing about where any of this came from. Except to say that I did not make up the Manitou Motel. I'm not that clever. It really does exist, and the town where it exists is more creepy than I can properly express in the space of this fic. *Cues the X-Files theme music*
"It says to take the Hoquellum exit."
"Which one?"
Scully lifted her head from their printed-out directions. "The one going... wait. Puget View is south of here, but the signs go either east or west. That makes no sense."
"Gotta pick one or the other, Scully. That trucker behind us isn't gonna wait, I don't think."
"East."
Mulder turned off in the indicated direction. "You sure?"
"No. But it's too late to worry about that now. If it's the wrong way, we'll circle back." For a moment, things looked to be going well, but then... "Umm... Mulder?"
"Yeah?"
"These houses are a little..."
"Creepy?"
Scully pursed her lips. "I was thinking more along the lines of 'run-down,' but... Mulder, that man is staring at us."
"I expect they don't get a lot of cars with the modern amenities in a town like this. Or maybe he's just shocked to see one off the cinder-blocks, if his yard is any indication."
They slowed to a stop, waiting for the light to turn. "He's still staring..." Scully muttered out of the corner of her mouth.
"I can see that. Just look somewhere else."
"Like at the closed-down tux shop? Or maybe that hair salon?"
Mulder glanced over, tapping his fingers in an irregular rythm on the steering wheel. "I didn't think people still painted them that shade of pink..."
"They don't, if the weathering on that paint-job is any indication. Oh dear God... tell me we're not staying there." She pointed.
"Why not? Cable, lots of vacancies... oh, look, they've got a pool..."
"'Manitou Motel,' Mulder? Why not just call it the Roach Inn and be done with it?"
Mulder snickered and started to turn in, stopped only by his partner reaching across and taking firm hold of the wheel. "We are not stopping here, Mulder. This town is... not right."
"Now who's the paranoid?"
"Call me whatever you want, just get back on the highway and take the western exit."
"Alright, alright... but I do think we should stopp in for lunch. That pizza joint doesn't look half bad."
