Edited because I should not write political commentary without having caffeine first.
Offers of Aid for Katrina Victims Pour In, but the US hasn't accepted them yet. Aside from direct monetary aid to organizations like the Red Cross, none of the offers have been accepted. My original commentary here was based on a bit of hearsay and my reading just a wee bit too fast for my tired brain. Thankfully, all is not so scary as it looked.
Anyway.
Yesterday, I woke up early (all of my own accord, *gasp!*) worked on my writing, worked on some mending (I have jeans that don't have holes anymore, yay!), watched some DS9 while I sewed, and went to the farme's market with
nekokoban. There, I tasted the most amazing peach I've ever eaten, had some truly fabulous samples of homemade focaccia, honey, and chevre, and ended up buying some potatoes, some little apples (big apples make me sick, the small ones are usually enough that I don't get nauseated), and... three asian pears. Huge nostalgia thing, that. We used to have a pair of asian pear trees in our front yard, before my dad moved, so every year around this time I start getting really really wistful for them. It still feels weird to buy them, but I just couldn't resist when I saw them there. And the nice lady only asked $2 for all three, because they were packing up for the day!
The peach slice was pure nectar, dripping down my hand and making me laugh because I couldn't resist licking it off my wrist, but the pears were the real joy. Crisp and sweet, with just enough tart right at the center when you eat really close to the core.

Date: 2005-09-04 05:30 pm (UTC)But the other, I read it and reread it and took off my glasses and cleaned them and reread it again. First, let me say, that if we need the money,(and how the hell could we not?) to help all the now homeless people post Katrina, and the US refuses, then we have a real problem. And one we'd better look at.
*But* no where did I see where the US has denied any help. In fact, what the article does say is:
State Department officials have not yet said if any of these offers -- beyond specific offers of cash to humanitarian organization -- have been accepted.
Is there another part of the article that I missed? (is possible, I'm tired)

Date: 2005-09-04 06:02 pm (UTC)Oh dear. Looks like I need to reread it, now. This may be a case of me hearing that we'd denied aid from several people, then reading the article and letting my caffeine-less brain over-interpret. Thanks for catching that, I'll look into it right away!
