A little while ago I promised [livejournal.com profile] narsilion that I would post a link to the official "Serenity" DVD cover art. I kept forgetting, but now I realize that what I really ought to do is something far more interesting. Okay... maybe it's really only more interesting to me. But hopefully you'll all humor me. ;)

Beneath this cut are four images. One is the official cover art. The other three are fan-covers designed by the lovely folks over at the official message-board. I'll just add that I dislike the official cover (opinion slightly upgraded from hating the very pixels it was made of when I first saw the damned thing), and that I will definitely be seeking a way to print out one of the beautiful fan covers, which I think are much better and more professional-looking... but hey, I'm interested to see what other people think, too.

It probably won't be too hard for folks to figure out which is which, but I'll still be amused by reactions. Which do you like best?

So... here goes. Warning: big graphics under the cut!

Ughhh. I still hate the official one. It looks like some second rate sf flick. But that top one, I like.

Resignation has dulled my feelings toward it somewhat. I still very much resent our beautiful movie being represented by that monstrosity, though.

The top one's nice, isn't it? I think it's probably my favorite, although I really like the second one, too.

I just wish they could use something more like the series' cover. I mean- those are nice. And they suit the theme, and the feel of the series.

I know. I love the series' DVD cover. In fact, one of the fan covers did exactly that....

*Didn't go through 25 pages of stuff on the message-board collecting all of these, really, of course not* ;)

Ahaha. I would so have done exactly the same thing ;) And that's nice. Not my favourite- I still prefer the top one, although the other commenter is right about the pose *g*

The second one I like, but it reminds me of the original Star Wars, for some reason that I can't put my finger on.

I definitely prefer either the first or the second, too. The first is based off the international poster for Serenity, which was damn pretty. Too bad the US (and Canada, I assume?) got the blue text-y thing instead.

Huh... that's an intereresting connection. Maybe it's the color scheme? There is something strangely... familiar about it.

Image 1: Not bad, not bad. I like the muted colors, although River's pose bothers me.

Image 2: I REALLY like that one. I mean really. Yum.

Image 3: Pretty standard, but nice.

Image 4: ZOMG River's hed iz pastede on yey? Though as a general rule I like contrasting cool and warm colors, this takes it to the extreme. And is probably the official art, yes?

1. Yeah, the pose sucks ass, but I like the rest of it. I'm especially fond of the way the rest of the crew looks in that one.

2. Neat, isn't it? Classic, simple, and I love the shot of River they chose.

3. This one appeals in a "if they wanted to be consistent but lazy" sort of way. I'm not a huge fan of the US movie poster, but I'm used to it, so... Meh.

4. Yup. That's the real one. My favorite nitpicks? Horribly-airbrushed!Summer, the non-sensical laser battle in the top right corner, and what I can only assume is meant to be a landscape full of Reavers at the bottom. WTF? Also, what the fuck is the landscape just above the text on the right? 75% of this cover has no connection to the movie whatsoever.

I love the second one. The first one's good too -- it looks very professional, at least. But the second's my favorite.

I'm planning to make one of my own. I've collected some images to use, but I probably won't have the time to put it together until the first week of December. Or so.

I tend to think the second is my favorite, too, particularly since the graphic combination is, as far as I know, totally original. The first is lovely use of the international poster, but the second is just so creative.

Alas, I have not the graphics skills to make my own - I'm still trying to figure out how to make something as simple as a wallpaper for my desktop, sadly. But it means I'm all the more appreciative of folks with the talent and ability for making these things really shine!

1) I thought this was the Official one until I read the comments.
It looks to me like a cheesey take off on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with the pose that River is in.
2) I like this one, it's good, (although Simon looks a little dorky.)
3) Meh. It's the poster....it's ok.
4) Ok, so this is the sucky, actual cover. I really don't think it's bad at all. I actually kind of like it. I was expecting REALLY bad. Like, campy.
5) The one with the ship....THIS is the one I REALLY like. It's simple, to the point, and, hey, the ship (boat) is a very interesting design, and I like that. JUST the ship, and...yup. That's the one I like. Also, silly I know, but I really like the script.
So, yeah, I guess I like the ship one best, number 2 second best,
the last one (real one) 3rd best, the poster one 4th best, and the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon one,(#1) least.
ok...I weird. ;D

The pose is the one thing I don't like about that cover - the poster its based off was just beautiful, if you ignored the stupid flying!River motif.

Yeah, Simon does look dorky in the second one, poor guy.

Far as I'm concerned, that one is campy. But I'm fussier about graphics (not to mention more neurotically protective of the show) than you are. *Shrugs* It's not as absolutely horrendous as I thought it was way back when it first came out, but when you realize the others I posted were all made by non-professionals just having fun.... yeah.

I like the ship one, but I recognize that it probably wouldn't be the best choice for a movie. There's simple, and then there's too simple for the mass-media market.

Speaking of the script, I seem to recall I found the font somewhere... I'll have to see how it came out. XD

Yeah, I do understand, especially since the others were made by people just plain proving they can do the same or better than the professionals. I think the first one would be totally wonderful if it was the pose of River when the doors open after she's killed all those Reavers in the movie, and she's just standing there, holding the two weapons. THAT would be my favorite of all, and why they didn't do that is beyond me. It makes perfect sense I think.
It's just the pose in the first one that makes me feel weird.
Have a great day!

Exactly. I'd love to see a DVD cover that's centered around River's silhouette, backlit just as the wall comes down with the Reaver weapons in her hands. There could be other bits goin on in the darkness around her, potentially, but that image would just be perfect. Wish I had the graphics chops to do it.

Thanks, you too! I'm hoping the weather stays nice, as I'm headed downtown to the museum and I'd love to not get rained on while I'm out. ;)

From: [identity profile] narsilion.livejournal.com
Well, it's so much faster than the other one, It has a dvd player, and cd/rw, and so many other things that I need to read and learn about.
And SOUND! my poor thing didn't have sound anymore.
Thank goodness for friends that are going to buy things at best buy the morning after Thanksgiving and are willing to do that over and above the call of duty for friendship and pick you up the computer deal, because you have to work and can't stand in line at the store overnight. And hurray for computers that are $600.00, $398.00 on sale, and the after Thanksginving special sale (30 only) of $149.00!
What a deal! My poor old computer was starting to make some scary noises. Did not want to be computerless.

Oh, and I forgot, I went and saw HP Goblet of Fire today. I thought it was really good, except for Mad Eye Moodies eye. That kind if sucked in my opinion, but Fred and George were darling, the little bit of Snape we get to see in wonderfully fun, and Cedric....you'll find him yummy! I will be seeing it again! Daniel Radcliff and Rupert Grint, I think did wonderful jobs, as did Jason Issacs in the small amount that we see him. Ralph was ok, as Voldemort. Hermione was cute, though very not so great. Fleur was wonderful. Oh, and Ginny, what a cute girl!

Yay, I'm glad you like your new computer, and I'm glad the movie was good! I have no idea when I'm going to see it, 'cause I have to do grocery shopping and stuff tomorrow and write my paper and everything. But hopefully I'll get to it (and RENT!!!) soon. Especially Rent. OhgodRent. *Squee*
