Hell, I've occasionally made that problem with fiction writers, so I understand. Workshopping is great, the potential to go over someone else's work before anyone else sees it can be terribly fun, but it's damned dangerous if you aren't already familiar with the level of their work... and with the word-count. ;)
Which reminded me of having my American Philosophical Association membership revoked after I called the secretary of the APA a "pedantic twit."
I gained some notoriety after that, which caused a great number of people ask if they could send me their philosophy works for review. I, fool I was, assumed that they were, you know, academics, and I ended up with more than one tin-foil-hat missive scribbled by some bedridden flake.
Imagine getting that "What the drug companies aren't really telling you!" book written by someone with a jr. high education. 3 or 4 times a month.
Aiya. Fun stuff. :P At least the tin-foil-hat crazies are usually kind of amusing, in their fucked up ways. I mean, they're insane - but insanity can definitely be funny if you look at it slantways.
