A lot of things may be wrong with the US right now, but two things give me hope:

1. The campaign against Alito is, if not actually managing anything, at least making a significant stink. Good on Massachusetts. :D

2. As of this morning, the Washington State senate passed a 'gay rights bill' today. According to the Seattle Times, "Opponents warned the legislation [...] would lead to gay marriage and force people to hire gays and lesbians against their religious beliefs."

Sane people the world over reply, "Yes. That's exactly the point."

Oh, and folks may be amused to know that I went to a panel on "Careers in Writing" today, and ended up chatting with a very nice lady who, it turns out, wrote for both The X-Files and Star Trek: The Next Generation. I restrained the desire to fangirl her with much giddiness, and instead praised her commentary about mythology and classic literature like Shakespeare as necessary in the background of any good writer. :D

I'm still trying to figure out which episodes it was.

*Laughs* I did get some good advice, yes. Mostly stuff I'd heard or thought of before, but it was still a very useful panel, overall.

I just thought that was the most universally amusing bit of the experience. ;)

IMdb lists only three X Files staff writers with "female" names -Kim Newton, Valerie Mayhew, and Vivian Mayhew, and none of them have a Star Trek writing credit.

(But oddly enough, the Mayhews have some soft-core porn producing/writing in their resumes)

Not that that means anything, X Files used a lot of non-staffers in writing.

*shrug*

just an excuse to cruise IMdb at work :)

*Nods* The TNG episode was a one-episode spec script gig that was pretty much the start of her career, and it sounded like the X-Files stuff was fairly short-term, as well - recently she's done stuff with House and a few other things I don't remember.

Ken Hutcherson's head will explode any moment now. I sooooooooo want a cross-dresser to go apply for work in his church. JUST to piss him off.

I'm very happy that it passed. I heard an interesting interview on the radio with the woman in charge of dealing with sexual orienation discrimination cases filed in Seattle (which has a city law already on the books, apparently. As does Tacoma. I did not know that.) and she said that about 1/3 of the cases filed that meet standard for investigation were filed by heterosexuals. Interesting...

Hehehehehe. Can we get a live video feed for when that happens, please?

1/3 of the sexual orientation discrimination cases... are filed by heterosexuals. So, heterosexuals claiming that they're being discriminated against... by gays? That's new. And rather odd.

I love it when the privilaged majority gets mad over "special rights" for other groups. I haven't heard anything in the gay rights movement that couldn't be boiled down to "Please let me live my own personal life, which doesn't interfere with yours. Oh, and please don't fuck me over because you don't agree with my personal life". Asking for those things is not asking for special rights, it's asking to be treated the same as everyone else.

Sometimes I would just love it if I could flip a switch that made white straight christians a minority with all the problems that go with it. Hell, actually I want a large red button that releases lions to eat them instead. I could just be grumpy.

Glad to hear the writing panel was interesting, any good leads there?

How did the interview go?

I managed to be 30 minutes late. They set four different appointments for it, and I remembered the wrong one. Doesn't look like there was any harm done.

Everyone who is involved with the desicion has worked with me the entire time I've been here, and hasn't ever said anything negative. Hopefully it's just going through a formal process. They are still interviewing actively, so I don't know when I'll find out for certain.

No kidding. I swear, the entire history of Christianity is essentially still based on the "ohmigod we're being persecuted by outside forces!!!" feeling. They haven't been persecuted since the fucking 3rd century or something like that. 1700 years later, you'd think they'd be over it. And, generalizing beyond Christianity, this whole "the way you live your life threatens our majority lifestyle!" shit just needs to fucking end.

More like it gave me better perspective about a few of the leads I have now, and how I can move toward a better break in the future, but yeah, also some good leads toward future work. And things I need to work on. So yay, very productive, and quite worth skipping out of two hours of work.

I wish you caould have asked her which episodes she wrote! Darn.
I left you a phone message earlier, but now I see that you are terribly busy tonight. Get back with me about dinner at Benihana's as soon as you can ok?

It should be fairly easy to work out - the episode she wrote for TNG was one dealing with the Borg, which limits it down significantly, and I know her name, so I just need to troll episode lists for The X-Files until I find the right one.
