little bits
Apr. 11th, 2006 04:22 pmIf you are at all interested in almost any sci-fi fandom currently running or recently 'departed,' the odds are good that you will find something to sporfle at in this link.
As a side note, today in my expository writing class I brought up X-Men's Professor Xavier as an example (and, I think, a very good one in terms of positive portrayal) of a disabled character in cinema... and only one other person in the 20-person class had so much as seen one of the movies. It was a bit surreal.
Needless to say, I quashed my temptation to launch into how, from a symbolic standpoint, the entire X-Men phenemona can be understood as a commentary on disability and social outcast status. Clearly, not the right audience.
Still guzzling tea. Must write papers. Blaaaargh.

Date: 2006-04-11 11:37 pm (UTC)There is actually an entire school of thought and study in regards to disability in film. I have a couple of text books that deal with it. It's interesting, but people sometimes take Body Genre stuff too far.

Date: 2006-04-11 11:57 pm (UTC)I'm not surprised. We're just doing a film review on a movie called Murderball as our first assignment, so we're barely dipping into the theory surrounding the whole deal. It seems like a fascinating subject, though - I've really enjoyed what I've read so far. And some people take every school of thought too far, seems like.

Date: 2006-04-12 02:33 am (UTC)He totally does. He rocks. I really need to come up with some good text so I can make an icon of that picture. XD

Date: 2006-04-12 02:46 am (UTC)Dude, I think just "Jedi Master" would be good enough text. (And if you make it, can I borrow it? Cause... Ron Glass + Jedi = Kari wants.)

Date: 2006-04-12 02:48 am (UTC)You may certainly. Terra has already requested it, and I originally thought of it as a "hey, must make an icon for Mom" project. *g*

Date: 2006-04-12 03:12 am (UTC)Uhmmmm, pardon the pun, but he looks dead.
Ron Glass is totally the best. Summer looks good,
and Morena and Jewel, they just look so cute.
if they were coming at you with that light saber, it would not strike ANY fear, it would just be like, Ahhhh,
you're so cute!

Date: 2006-04-12 03:29 am (UTC)Yeah, I know, Alan's isn't the greatest picture in the world, poor boy. Summer's amuses the heck out of me, because it looks like something that River would do. She looks so tiny and cute. But yes, Ron wins. He is so very kickass and adorable.

Date: 2006-04-12 01:31 am (UTC)What type of tea?

Date: 2006-04-12 02:32 am (UTC)I'm trying to stick with mostly herbals, so the caffeine doesn't dry out my system - right now, rose-hips and hibiscus; earlier it was green tea with honey, and earlier than that I had a bunch of an herbal tea specifically designed to sooth sore throats. That one has licorice root, fennel seed, black cherry bark, cinnamon, orange peel, slippery elm bark, cardamom, ginger, mullein, clove, and black pepper. I'll probably have another cup of that before I go to bed. ...I'm a tea-fiend. ;)
