I'm going to break for this one - I think this is the kind of thing no person can actually say unless they're in the moment. I've been in situations before where I was aware of a sort of mental plan to put myself in harm's way if something happened (I'm obsessive and paranoid - the kind of person who looks for emergency exits and plans how to gouge an attacker's eyes with her keys on a daily basis), but I believe that only the moment can or will prove something like this. I would hope that I would, but I also value my own life, and I'm a pragmatist, and often a cowardly one, at heart. Anyhow.

Fire is very pretty. And I'm the (mostly) harmless kind of pyro - the worst I've ever done was accidentally light my thumbnail on fire while trying to start a little campfire.

But that was my dad's fault.

No, really. I was making the fire, and he handed me the lighter and then said he was going up the hill to use his cellphone. The last words he said to me before he left the campsite were "don't light your thumb on fire." It was a curse.

Nah, I had long(ish) nails back then, which was what got me in trouble, but also fortunately prevented anything other than an unsightly char mark on the tip. I tore it off before my dad came back.

The sad thing, for me, is that yes... I'm really that bad with conventional lighters. This is why I keep a huge box of matchers, but not a single Bic in my house.

Although when I was a kid, I remember lighting most of a big box of matches out on the porch because watching them burn was pretty.

I used to have trouble with book matches (kitchen matches are totally the thing to have!), but I don't have trouble with them anymore. Lighters, on the other hand... I can never seem to get the hang of the gesture. I'm forever getting my thumb too close and all... umm... hence why my dad knew it'd be a potential problem. He'd watched me struggle with the damned thing a few too many times. :P

He meant it as a joke. And may he never know how true it was....

I was a good little former-suburban urban girl, before - trust me when I say that it's hard to find urban intellectuals who don't freak out if they hear that a person likes a bit of country music on occasion. When explaining my folk-dancing habit, a guy I was dating asked "but... it's not like square dancing, right?" I could see the "ohgodno" in his eyes. XD
