campaign, snakes, and pirates
Jul. 3rd, 2006 01:33 amToday... was busy. Got up early to write (didn't get as much done as I'd hoped, though), went to
coramegan's place for my first session of DnD in ages, which went very well through complete idiotic luck on the parts of our characters. I played a fighter, which was something of a new experience for me. The shining stars of the campaign were definitely
maho_kiwi's southern country-girl berserker, and
coramegan's spastic and naive little cleric. Who looks like a girl. And of course Pukey, the party mascot - a cow-sized dung beetle with a useful talent for giving off light at will (or when upset).
Much fun was had, I drank and ate too much and then felt very sluggish and dumb because of all of that combined with the heat, and we discussed sending a letter to Samuel L. Jackson outlining what would surely be the greatest Broadway success since "The Producers" - "Snakes on a Plane: The Musical." The lyrics as we conceived them consisted primarily of "Snakes! On a mother-fucking plane!" sung by, variously, chorus members dressed as flight attendants, costumed as snakes, as plain-clothes passengers, and leaning out of the baggage compartments.
We figure that although Mr Jackson may not be up to singing the lines himself, it would actually be more effective for him to just sort of... shout them, at a few key intervals. Either way, it'd be a cult smash. XD
...Anyway. After all of that, came home and watched Pirates of the Caribbean in preparation for the release of the sequel next weekend, and began learning new crochet stitches out of one of my books. Because I can't crochet things and make them straight, so clearly I need things other than scarves that I can make.
Oh, and for those who are curious - there are actually two September 11 movies coming up - one with the godawful "Flight Whatever" title style, and the other called "World Trade Center." And I don't feel so bad about considering going to see "Nativity," now that I know that it's about the lead-up to the birth of Christ, and that Keisha Castle-Hughes is playing young!Mary. Who? The absolutely adorable and very-good-actress little girl from "Whale Rider." Not bad!
Oh, and
coramegan? I shock even myself sometimes. I'm either psychic... or developing an impressive knack for predicting Hollywood trends. Not that it's difficult, most of the time. :P
Bed for me, now.

Date: 2006-07-03 10:35 am (UTC)Flight 93 has already come and gone. It got excellent reviews but the box office was mediocre, probably because of the subject matter. The Oliver Stone movie on the disaster stars Nicholas Cage (*shudder*) as a firefighter trapped in the wreckage and is based on a true story.
The musical sounds like a great idea. I wonder if it'll sell?

Date: 2006-07-03 01:30 pm (UTC)I love the "Snakes on a Plane: The Musical" idea
It sounds so awesome. Pitch it to the right people and off you would all go! ;D
I had never heard of Nativity, or World Trade Center, but everyone has been talking about the Teenage Mutant Nija Turtles movie for the past few months. I love the turtles!

Date: 2006-07-03 03:40 pm (UTC)The Nativity movie sounds interesting, although I am conflicted about this new Christian trend in Hollywood. "Superman Returns" seems like some Christian right-winger got ahold of the Superman story and changed it to make Superman into Jesus ("They are a good people, Kal-El, they wish to be - they just need someone to show them they way. That is why I have sent them you, my only son" ?!?!?!) As for the WTC movies, how appalling. Do the words "TOO SOON" mean anything to movie-makers anymore?
But as for NOT too soon, yeah, TMNT! Can you imagine how absurd that will be? I can't wait! :D

Date: 2006-07-03 04:34 pm (UTC)The steady rise of Christian themes bothers me, too, but I suspect the same root cause (the war, people feeling very discontented right now in general) is the reason that fantasy movies are going over well, too. Kind of like a cinematic return to the 40s and 50s, when film was an escape for a lot of people. And, to be fair, it turns out that a lot of this stuff is done with a reasonable amount of intelligence, from what I've heard.
And no, it's not too soon at all for them to redo the horrible 80s versions of TMNT. Thank god, no more walking piles of latex!

Also, Alan Rickman has a new movie coming out this winter, with Dustin Hoffman. 'Perfume: the Story of a Murderer' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0396171/).

Date: 2006-07-03 04:42 pm (UTC)I sort of wish I had the knack for lyric-writing. It'd sell better if I already had a libretto in hand. ;)

Date: 2006-07-03 04:45 pm (UTC)I remember that I watched it, and knew kids with the TMNT footie pajamas, but what exactly happened to them to make them TMNTs? Was it radioactive goo, or what? And what was with the pizza? And the Italian names? The more you examine the facets of these characters (just think of each word individually: Teenage. Mutant. Ninja. Turtles.), the more ridiculous it becomes. The creators of the cartoon were either very smart, or very stoned. I am looking forward to the movie!
