Aug. 4th, 2006 10:45 amBeing female sucks. Have some random questions and answers while I contemplate the suckiness of biology.
1. How much time do you spend on the Internet daily?
Let's see... eight hours at work, minus about four hours in which I'm not sitting at my desk... plus the occasional messing around online at home... But really, the internet is a big part of my actual job, so it's legit.
2. What are your favorite 3 websites?
Livejournal, NPR.org, and... hmm. Probably Anthropology in the News, run by Texas A&M (don't kill me,
nekokoban - it's not my fault they have a cool anthro website!).
3. Do you eat at your computer?
Oh yes. The only one I don't eat at is the laptop.
4. Pick one and why - Reading the news online or in a newspaper?
Online, of course. I can never re-fold the paper ones right, and I hate getting newsprint all over my hands.
5. How many people are on your instant messenger buddy list?
Umm. *Counts on fingers* Many. I actually have no idea, and I'm hardly ever online anymore. Although I am on MSN all day at work (*hint hint*). Username same as my listed email.
1. Are you named after anyone? If so, explain.
Not unless you count the other seven zillion Jennifer Marie's born within ten years of me. No, seriously. I go to a very tiny optometrist's office, and there's another girl in their files who has exactly the same name and birth date as me, except a year later. I've learned to say "the one who's turning twenty-four this fall," so I don't get someone else's prescription mailed to me by accident.
Although I do have my great-grandma's name as my middle name. (Was that intentional, Mom?) And I recently found out from my grandma that my first Irish ancestor in this country was named Jenny, so... I like to think of her as my unintentional namesake. ;)
2. Do you have your children's names picked out already? If so, is there any significance?
I don't, although I come up with ideas all the time. I love names. I believe in one slightly odd name, one mostly-normal name, so that the child can go by whichever they want at different times in their life. Probably one or both would have spiritual significance for me, for which any child of mine may or may not want to strangle me. ;)
3. If you were born a member of the opposite sex what would your name have been?
Joshua. (Joshua Michael? Or am I making that up?)
4. If you could re-name yourself what name would you pick and why?
This is a tricky one. There was a time when I would've done it in a heartbeat (sharing a name with five other girls in a single class will make a person a bit bitter...), but it's become a part of me, now.
5. Are there any mispronunciations/typos that people do w/ your name constantly?
Nope. :P
1. What talent(s) do you have that could make you famous?
Acting. All arrogance aside, I think I'm pretty damned good. Not amazing, but with practice...
2. If you could be famous for one day, what would you do?
Hide? I'm joking, but really fame = not anything I'm interested in. I've seen how people talk about celebrities, and it ain't pretty. But I'd make a go of good publicity for all my pet causes, go out to one of those big cat refuges (because everybody lets celebrities into those!), and then go out on the town and into all the sorts of bars and restaurants that only the People In The Know can get into. And flirt shamelessly with some of my favorite actors/actresses. ;)
3. If you were so famous that money was no object, where would you live?
One of the very nice neighborhoods of Seattle, England, or New Zealand.
4. If you could meet any famous person, who would it be?
At the moment? Christopher Lee. Because he's had an amazing life, met amazing people, and I'd love to talk to him before he goes into hiding for a few hundred years. (What? You don't honestly believe that man's mortal, do you?)
5. What would be your famous catch phrase/quote/motto/last words?
I have abosolutely no clue.
1. What about you makes you unique?
...Nothing? I'm very non-descript. But I suppose my hair is reasonably unique - natural blondes are coming to be fairly uncommon, and mine has all sorts of interesting shadows and highlights in it, right now, from the sun.
2. What aspect of your physical appearance do you think makes you stick out from the crowd?
Size. I'm tiny.
3. What do you always have with you while out in public? (for example, earrings, purse, wallet, watch, etc.)
Nothing always. I usually have my watch, and a ponytail.
4. Is there anything about your body that you think isn't normal?
My torso is abnormally short. No, really. It's disturbing, and makes it very hard to find clothes that fit properly.
5. What are you complimented on (looks, smarts, anything) the most? Why do you think that's the case?
Actually, the most frequent comment people make is that I'm tiny. In exactly those words. "You're so tiny." I'm not convinced that this is a good thing. After that it's my hair, which I do think is a good thing.
1. When you were a child, what was your favorite game to play?
Pretend. My friends and I acted out elaborate (and frequently ongoing) stories. Is it any wonder that I grew up to want to be an actress and a writer?
2. What is your favorite game to play right now?
The same. That'll never change - I'm just better at hiding it, now. XD
3. Can you share a good story about playing with others or yourself?
Hmm, must think of something suitably non-incriminating... Just kidding. Pretty much everything I can think of somehow involves my knack for weaving whatever I was doing into a pretend of one kind or another - building blanket forts over my friend's apple trees, tromping down their huge overgrown hill, digging potatoes... There was also the time my friend and I both managed to hide ourselves in the cupboard up above her vanity. It was a lot bigger than it looked, but it was still darned impressive, looking back.
4. What do you do for play time fun now?
I play with my cat, or I go for long walks, tell myself stories (how do you think I come up with writing ideas? I have to tell them to myself!), role-play with people (not that way, you pervs! ...after all, I don't have an SO!)
5. If you were able to invent a game, what would you call it?
I'm really not inventive that way, but I think multi-fandom Scrabble ought to be a more universal concept.

Brilliant answer -- just brilliant. XD

Date: 2006-08-04 06:46 pm (UTC)It's funny, though ... that's one of the very few things I remember from elementary school. I just sort of blocked the rest out, cause I didn't enjoy it too much. I remember getting in trouble, though ... of course.

Date: 2006-08-04 06:56 pm (UTC)Best case-in-point: I took a Very Boring Seminar a few years ago - the prof was just about the most boring human being I've ever met, and the books were interesting but she had a knack for sucking the life out of them, anyway. And so every day I came into this 15-person class, opened my notebook, dated the page... and wrote fic. One page of scribbled text looks about the same as any other, right? And because it was a small discussion class, I had to be able to write whatever I was working on and follow the conversation, make comments and analysis and such, and take notes whenever something important came up. And so that's exactly what I did, every day except the one the professor sat down right next to me.
I know what you mean. Elementary school and middle school are both just a series of flashes, for me. Kind of funny - especially with middle school, three years seem to telescope down to about the length of a week in terms of what I actually remember. God, I hated middle school. :P

Date: 2006-08-04 07:04 pm (UTC)I'm relieved to hear you agree with me about not remembering much ... it worries me sometimes that I can hardly even remember my teacher's names, and then I hear other people talking about all kinds of vivid memories from their childhood. I just don't have that, really.
You know, now that I think about it, I think those two things might have something to do with each other. I was never very firmly planted in reality as a kid, which may be why I have a hard time remembering it. I just wasn't paying all that much attention. Hmmmm ... interesting thought.

Date: 2006-08-04 08:02 pm (UTC)I don't think anybody remembers that much of their childhood. I have some very vivid memories (mostly really, really random), but for the most part? Lots of blanks, and lots of things I can't figure out why I remember, or that I remember for really weird reasons. Which is probably just proof that I was always a really weird kid. ;)
no subject
Date: 2006-08-05 04:27 am (UTC)I was a weird kid too. I think being a weird kid makes you an okay adult. In my experience. XD

Date: 2006-08-04 11:48 pm (UTC)you would go around either helping other students with there work or correcting their work. I don't remember which it was. We got called in to see your teacher, and she made your Dad and I sit on the little "kiddie" seats while she towered over us in her big teacher chair, and she shook her finger at us. She was such a bitch. After that, I was hoping you'd keep doing it, just for spite.

Date: 2006-08-05 12:38 am (UTC)Honestly, she was a bitch, but she was right.

Date: 2006-08-04 08:39 pm (UTC)In all seriousness, though, pretend is wonderful, and I guess it's basically what ever writer still does, although I never really thought of it that way before. Cool thoughts, though - thanks for memeing!
Sorry you're hating being a girl right now. I would love to play multi-fandom Scrabble with you any time to take your mind off it!

Date: 2006-08-04 08:56 pm (UTC)You would have made the ride to Canterbury fun! Someone should do a rewrite of that, for the modern day - it's such a fun story. And yes, I figure most writers passed their time like that when they were kids... I don't talk about it much, because I still feel like it's kind of a weird way to live as a "grown-up," but hey - if I can ever make something of it, it'll be worth being weird, right?
Fandom Scrabble is the best.

Date: 2006-08-04 10:42 pm (UTC)Actually, when I first read (some) of The Canterbury Tales in high school, I toyed with the idea of writing a modern version in which a bunch of people get stranded in an airport terminal, waiting for a repeatedly delayed flight, and tell each other stories to make the time go faster. I might still do that, actually, if I ever get the plot bunny off the ground.
I love talking about writerly/geeky/childhood/anything stuff with people who are on the same page. I think talking to writers about childhood pretend games is so fun - it's like an awesome secret club!
Harry Potter scrabble would be awesome. So would Firefly Scrabble, although the latter might require a Mandarin dictionary.
no subject
Date: 2006-08-05 12:45 am (UTC)That'd be so awesome - you really do have to write that one!
Exactly! We're a secret club by virtue of being so weird that only other writer-geeks can understand us.
It is. And Firefly... oh wow. Yeah, you'd have to find a way of agreeing on a single Anglicization (?) scheme, too, which could be tricky. But just think of the possibilities for all those letters that aren't much used in English! Not to mention all the 'verse slang!
no subject
Date: 2006-08-05 04:10 pm (UTC)Hmm... We'd have to decide on a policy regarding dialect - for example, is "gettin" a word in FF Scrabble, or not? And what about "ruttin"? So complex! You're right about the Mandarin, though - standardizing that English spelling would be TOUGH!

Date: 2006-08-05 04:14 am (UTC)OMG I didn't know that stuff was supposed to be taken like one instead of the other! :x I've been taking them at the same time. Like 800mg of Motrin and then ??? mg of Napro blah blah blah.
This was my reasoning. I'll take Motrin for the cramps and Napro for the burning / inflammation in my uterus. Hey it works for me, when there horrible (which is like the first 2 days. Grrrr!

Date: 2006-08-06 07:28 am (UTC)Also, what I think is better is when roommates IM each other from across the room. Freshman year, we'd be sitting three feet from each other and be on AIM. One would make a joke, the other would crack up, and the joker would turn around and wink. Only then would we talk about it.
no subject
Date: 2006-08-06 04:13 pm (UTC)Yes! One of my roommates and I used to do exactly that, way back when we lived in the dorms. Mostly we'd just send links to each other and stuff, but sometimes we'd forget and just chat back and forth until it struck one of us how weird that was.
