Just when you thought the franchise had finally died... they're planning Star Trek XI. With new actors cast as Kirk and Spock. So, apparently they've given up on the more recent branches and are trying to get back to their roots... not a bad choice

What do you think, folks? Will this resurrect a dying dinosaur, or will it be the last godawful blow that makes all of us who were once fans wish we'd never heard the name Star Trek?

Also, casting thoughts? Because it's fun to make silly stuff up for things like this. XD

Seeing as TOS was the last Star Trek I actually followed, and I still haven't seen any of the films after the Hamlet Star Trek, I figure this means *I'm* probably more likely to ask Netflix to send this to me when I'm bored and vaguely curious, anyhow. (:
(Note--I have not ignored the new Star Trek offerings out of spite or malice. I just can't be assed to spend the time.)

It should be interesting if nothing else... I'm intrigued, let's just say that. Nervous, but intrigued.

Matt Damon has already been confirmed as Kirk. o.o I am still wrapping my mind around it.

Matt... wow. Okay, is it bad that I actually think that's a fabulous idea? I mean, seriously... I might actually see that!

Now they need Ben Affleck as Spock.

I think he can do it, but it's just...not... Shatner. o.o I like MD.

Ben as spock = hahahahahahaahha!

Really? I think he's amusing. And he's a good actor, too, which puts him leaps and bounds ahead of Shatner...

Crap. I really can't stand Matt Damon. I was hoping they'd get somebody like...like...well, maybe Sean Bean. Now he would be a wonderful Kirk!

Um, slight correction...NO actors have been confirmed at this point. The Matt Damon rumor has been floating around for years, and there is no truth to it (nor is it likely, given that the new movie is supposedly a complete relaunch set at Star Fleet Academy, with Kirk in his late teens, Spock a few or two older, and McCoy and Scotty around thirty).

Personally, I think it's a great idea. J.J. Abrams is producing and has strongly implied that he wants to go back to the old velour uniforms and brightly colored sets. He's also giving Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner input/partial approval of the actors cast as young Kirk and Spock.

Sounds good to me, and I was a Trekkie as far back as 1973....

It's still listed on IMDB:

It is noted as rumored though... :(

Didn't know that - interesting.

IMHO, it's not a great choice - Damon and Shatner don't look anything alike, Damon is way too old o play a young Kirk, and if he signs, I have this awful feeling he'd want Ben Affleck to play either Spock or McCoy. Besides, why would an actor with more than one successful franchise of his own (the Ripley movies, the Bourne movies) want, or more importantly in Hollywood, *need* to pit himself against an icon like Kirk? This is like Jude Law suddenly deciding that he wants to play Rick in a remake of Casablanca.

I could be wrong, but I don't put much stock in this one....

I can see where you're coming from on this one (and it's probably still a fairly shaky deal - I expect if it were certain it'd be all over the news) but honestly... I kind of think Damon would be good for it. He's got a knack with comedy that would suit Kirk well, he can play a lot younger than he is (a definite plus, since a lot of younger actors simply don't have the chops needed to play an iconic character like this, or to play someone as... naturally spoofy as Kirk is), and he's a fair match in terms of physical type. Perhaps most importantly, he can play a bit of an ass and still make the character completely charming - which is something it often seemed they shot for with Shatner's Kirk and completely failed at.

And, of course, there's no denying that Damon has a following that would bring an audience that otherwise wouldn't look twice at a Star Trek film. Honestly, I'm having a hard time thinking of down-sides on this one, the more I think about it.

The trick with this kind of thing is that if they try to cast exactly to someone who looks like a young Shatner or a young Nimoy, they risk either never getting it, or ending up with someone based solely on appearance, which could ruin the production in terms of acting.

In terms of Damon's choice to take the role... what little boy of that general generation didn't want to be Captain Kirk at least at some point in his life?

Now, on the Ben Affleck gripe, that I'll give you. It's a funny mental image in terms of parody (you know they'd put him as Spock...), but I can't see it actually working. I'd like to think neither Damon nor the producers would be that dumb, though.

I wonder who they've got writing this monster...

Ok, you got me on the comedy thing. I did like EDamon in Dogma, but that's the only thing I've liked him in. Maybe he would be good.
Affleck as Spock? Hmmmm, probably not. Scotty maybe? ;P

See, I just picture him in Dogma, and I'm sold. He's got that "I'm so cool" kind of attitude that would suit a young Kirk just perfectly.

Funny image, though, isn't it? I don't know, it should be interesting to see who they come up with...

(You wanted a while ago to see a good picture of Ivanova. *Points to icon* It took me forever to get it to work, but there it is.)

That really is a good picture of her!
And yeah, I was thinking of other things he's been in, but when I thought of Dogma, it works.
Can Sean Bean play Spock please? They could dye his hair and he would be sooooo great. I know he could do it.

I think they can get away with another TOS movie if they ham it up, use old school special effects, and a bad immitation of Shatner's... speaking style!

I'm really looking forward to it. I grew up on the original Star Trek, having fond memories of my father cooking up a macaroni & cheese dinner for us and watching it in evening syndication. I then fell in love with the Next Generation in high school (in my opinion still one of the best tv shows of all time in terms of character work, plot and acting).

I thought the franchise got away from itself with the three other series that followed so I'm looking for something to spark it again. I would love for it to go back to the exploration roots the orginal and Next Gen did so well, with a liberated human race doing all it can to better itself. I think it has a shot, too, if it's played straight since the original Star Trek is parody of itself, now. Great acting and direction can do a lot to revive it.

It's funny getting such a different viewpoint on the franchise - I liked the original series okay, had a lot of fondness for the Next Generation, but it was Deep Space Nine that I really loved. Everything after that got a little fuzzier for me - Voyager was okay, but I hated the little bit of Enterprise that I saw. I guess it's all about which one grabs you first.

You're very right about the potential in this new movie, especially about how the original series is a parody of itself now. I really can't wait to see what they can do to bring it back to life!

The way I hear it (and it's all just rumor for now), this isn't even an "Original Series" story, so much as it is a Starfleet Academy story, like how Kirk and Spock met. A prequel to the whole ball of way, with JJ Abrams producing. I have pretty high hopes for it.

As far as actors, I honestly hope they get someone unknown for both Kirk and Spock. If it's going to be really young versions of them (like Wes Crusher's age in TNG), then they should be younger than Matt Damon. I can't think of anyone offhand, but just someone new would make it interesting, I think.

I'm a big DS9 fan myself. I grew up with the original series, hated the first couple seasons of TNG but grew to love it later, and I thought Voyager had a lot of potential but never really realized most of it...but DS9 was the one that really did the most with the whole idea. It could have been lame, and in a lot of ways, it should have been lame, but it turned out really well.

Anyway, yeah...the new movie definitely has me interested.
