I survived!
Jan. 4th, 2007 09:59 amI survived the first few days of rush! The kind that comes to the bookstore at the beginning of the quarter, not of the variety that ends with pledging to a sorority, mind. But... I survived! And I even enjoyed parts of it, because, hell, it makes the day go by really fast, and for the most part the students are all really nice and appreciate someone helping them. The worst parts were always the people who either get to the front of the line just to ask "where's (insert subject here)?" Read the sign, people. Or the people who are looking for the class-response clickers? Read the other sign, people. Or, my favorite, "What books are there for X class?" Uh... did you make it out to the subject shelf? "Yeah, and I found (blah)." Okay... d'you s'pose there's a chance that's all the books for that subject? "But I wanted to know if there's a course pack." If there was a course pack (moron!!!) it'd be on the shelf. If it's not on the shelf, we haven't received it yet. If there's no tag for it, we don't know anything about it. Shut up, go away, and let me deal with a customer who has a problem other than not having a brain.
...Okay, so I did get a little bitter at times. But hey, survival! And it was the normal kind of "ohmigod these people are insane!" bitter, not the "I'm going to die of the stress and this job is going to keeeeeeeeelll meeeeeeeeeee" like I used to feel at That Company. Customers I can handle. Even the dumb/annoying/bitchy ones. I have lots of practice. XD
I think I'm definitely building muscle tone from this job. Especially since I keep missing my bus and deciding, screw it, I'm walking to work/home. Muscles. Woo. Seriously, I think I feel biceps coming on. You have no idea how exciting this is for me - my legs are pretty much always strong, but arms... and maybe even some shoulder strength? Gasp!
And! Last night, as a reward for not being so tired that I was going to fall asleep as soon as I walked in the door (as I was on Tuesday night), Kendra and I did some watching of my 1st season Buffy DVDs. Ohmigod everyone is so tiny and cute! Teeny ickle Buffy, Xander and Willow! Adorably over-the-top proper Giles who somehow has not yet figured out how to get into the same camera shot with the girls without looking ever so slightly like he's on the edge of a bad lawsuit! And of course Angel being still skinny and awfully determined to be all meeesteeeeerious. With a Symbolic White Shirt creeping from under his overly shiny jacket. He even has real facial expressions in this season, up til he decides to be all angsty. Of course, the presence of facial expressions other than the eyebrows of doom had me giggling about how he looked like he was letting the evil out to play a little, but still very endearing. And a few days ago (can't remember when) we watched some of Black Adder, which I already knew I liked but which is much more amusing when it includes Miranda Richardson playing a delightfully perky Queen Elizabeth. Yay.
That is your "I'm no longer sick and dead from textbooks" update. I live, I function... I need tea and to get back to my writing.

Date: 2007-01-05 04:04 am (UTC)And oh, I have a friend applying at your old campus place of work, and little things like remembering (and then forgetting people's names) freak her out. Does this description match anyone you worked with, and if so, can you supply a name: Male, shortish, pudgy-ish, black.
Oh, and I meant to say, if for some reason you find you need a place to crash for a bit after working for some random reason (it's raining toads?) and you don't want to do that at work, let me know, and if I'm home, come on up since I'm just across the alley. Yay for working at bookstores. It's still a vague sort of dream of mine.

Date: 2007-01-05 06:42 am (UTC)Older guy? If he's in his forties or so, it's Rod Davis, the main boss guy. If he's younger, it must be someone I don't know, 'cause the only other black guy there I can think of who she'd have interviewed with is quite tall, skinny, and, frankly, gorgeous. He was my direct supervisor for a long time... happy days. *g* I assume she had an interview - tell her good luck with the application!
Awesome - that might be really nice sometime, even just to hang out for a bit before I start the trek home. And it's been one of my dreams for a long time, so I'm glad I get to actually do it. ;)
