I have my new computer! She was waiting in the living room in her box when I got home... with Theo lounging on top of her, of course. So now she's all out-of-the-box and (presumably) happy. She's... very sleek and shiny, unnervingly silver compared to my old black Dell box and... oh, yeah. She's noisy. Noisiest fan on any computer that I ever have heard. It's highly disconcerting.

I appreciate the whole "not dying of computer heat-stroke" aspect of this, but at the same time... dear gods that's going to take some getting used to. Also, takes getting used to the fact that I don't have all my usual settings, files, etc. installed. I had a near panic-attack when I realized that I had to actually download Firefox and Winamp again. ;)

So, long story short... relatively happy. I'm sure I'll get used to the noisiness in time. At the moment, it just makes me sort of twitchy.

...Incidentally, I've been feeling the itch for a new layout, so here you have it - another of the "style contest" layouts. Brighter and more summery than my old one, which was exactly the change I felt like I needed. One of these days I'll figure out how to make real LJ layouts all on my own. But for now, I'm focusing on normal HTML in my computer-hobby lessons.

That's sort of my feeling!

(Although I do wish she'd do so a bit more quietly...)

I wonder if that's a feature on many new computers. I've had my mac laptop for about four years (okay, so she's not exactly *new*), and she has the loudest fan I've ever heard. It doesn't run constantly, but when it does, it can even drown out my music or the tv.

Yeeeeeeeah. So far, Susan pretty much runs all the time - she gets quieter when I'm not actively opening a page or something, sometimes, but... for the most part, just plain noisy.

...I would blame this on her name, but given that it started right away I suspect it doesn't matter. ;)

eesh - I know what you mean about load fans mine is awful, I have to turn everything way up to hear it and I can't leave it on over night because I can't sleep through the noise.

Not haveing the right settings sucks, after my computer crashed and died it was so horrible putting everything back how I like it. Hope you get it right again soon :)

Yeah, I have a pretty strong feeling this computer is going to get turned off at night. She's just soooo noisy! And it kind of freaks me out 'cause on my old computer noisy fan was the first sign of impending doom (ie, running out of RAM for whatever I was trying to get her to do). But I'll get used to it eventually.

Thanks! I'm getting things worked out slowly but surely. ;)

Think of her as having a meditative hum (that's how I view my ickle laptops surprisingly loud fan). And isn't it freaky when you go to open your favourite application and it just ISN'T THERE. Freaked the hell out of me when I reimaged my drive.

*Laughs* That's a nice way to look at it! My laptop does the same thing, but he only does it when he's thinking very hard. Poor squishy. Susan just... she's high-energy, I guess. :P

And gods yes. I don't have Word, or Rough Draft, or GIMP... so many things to install. Yikes.

Congratulations on the new computer! That's always exciting. (Maybe music will overcome the sound of the fan? I listen to music pretty much constantly while on the computer.) The new LJ layout is pretty--I think it definitely gives that summery feel you wanted.

Thanks! I'm feeling a little bit cranky about her right now, since I'm currently hooked into my old computer (needed some graphics stuff that hadn't been transferred yet), and she's behaving perfectly now that she's plugged into the new keyboard... but whatever. Argh. Just... whatever.

Music is definitely the answer, but believe it or not, the fan is actually loud enough that it makes even music kind of difficult.

And my old computer is soooo quiet... *Sighs*

Thanks! I get antsy after the same layout for a few months - always nice to have a change. ;)

congratulations on the new computer. My older Dell had a loud fan (I thought), but my new (last year) XPS - which is a larger computer actually, barely makes any noise at all. I never hear a fan and it never overheats. So I'm pretty happy with it.

What kind of computer did you get this time? I learned the hard way to make a cd of stuff (winzip, Quicktime player, Java, etc) and then when something happens or you have a new computer, just pop it in and copy files to the new computer. And - ta da- there you are and you're not hunting up and downloading stuff again.

See, that's the funny thing. My six year old Dell, the old computer, is blissfully quiet. But the brand-new Dell (an E510)? Noisy as all get-out. *Grumbles*

Yeeeeah, I really ought to do something like that, but I'm always too busy moving files to worry about the programs that I could just hunt down easily.

Yeah... I'm feeling a little cranky about her right now, because I have Claire (the old one) booted up and hooked into everything and dear lord, she's so much quieter than the new one. And... seems to be working fine now that she's plugged into the new-new keyboard. Which gives me this really unpleasant feeling that it was just the stupid new keyboard giving me all that trouble, not the computer herself.

Not like I didn't more or less need a new computer eventually anyway, but... argh. And I'm really getting ticked about how noisy the new one is. I soooo don't have time for multiple hours on the phone with Dell this 'weekend' trying to get them to tell me what might cause such excessive fan noise. And if it's not something wrong, I'm in for a world of never leaving the computer on over night, and generally getting irritable at it all the time because of how frigging loud it is.

...Sorry about the rant. I'm just kind of in "BLAH, WORLD!!!" kind of mode right now. :P

Yay new computer! I hope it lasts you a good long while.

Did you end up with an extra LCD monitor or not? (I might have a use for one.)

I hope it does, too!

I didn't. I've got a hulking big standard monitor spare if you think you could use that, but I know nobody's particularly excited by those anymore.

no, the point of grabbing a spare LCD that became available would be to get rid of my hulking big standard monitor.

Oh well.
