"i know what kind of man I am, now..."
Jun. 8th, 2007 02:36 pmSaw the first four episodes of Doctor Who season 2 last night.
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
I adore this series. The Doctor is the cutest thing in the world... and I'm including Ten in that, too. It took me all of... two minutes, I think, to decide that I adore him. He is, if possible, even more manic and adorable than Nine, and a total sweetheart without losing any of the sudden darkness that makes the Doctor so fascinating as a character. Also, I think the casting director has similar aesthetics to mine. I swear, 85% of the men on this show have the sort of aquiline nose that, for reasons unknown, pushes my buttons like nothing else. I was delighted.
Episode 1: The Christmas Invasion: I think I have a new addition to my Christmas traditions. Favorite moments: 1. The Doctor crash-landing the poor TARDIS and then staggering out, insisting that he had something important to tell Jackie and Mickey, and then finally remembering... "Merry Christmas!" And he passes out cold on the cement. 2. The attack-Christmas-tree. ♥ 3. Prime Minister Jones (for the umpteen-billionth time): "Harriet Jones - Prime Minister." Sychorax (same as all the humans): "We know who you are." 4. The Doctor: "And... I'm quoting The Lion King." (Or something like that - I was laughing too hard to actually hear the exact words.) 5. THE TEA. TEA SOLVES EVERYTHING, I TELL YOU. ♥ 6. Everything. Everything. Everything. The housemates and I pretty much spent the whole episode cooing and squealing and shrieking over how wonderful it all was. Oh, and Torchwood! I'm much disturbed by Harriet Jones' decision to blow the Sychorax to kingdom-come. I'm on the Doctor's side - that was totally unnecessary. Beautifully handled.
Episode 2: New Earth: Not a whoooole lot to say except "WE HAVE A BUDGET NOW!!!" And that the first bit with Rose and the Doctor was So. Adorable. Also, Cassandra. Yay.
Episode 3: Tooth and Claw: Why is it that full motion pictures always turn werewolves into stupid chihuahua abominations, but the BBC, on a television budget, gets one almost exactly right? How does that work?! I love it. Also, David Tennant playing the Scottish accent was delightful - I'm guessing that's his native accent? Queen Victoria was very well-played, and I have to admit that I'm completely boggled as to what they're setting up with her exiling Rose and the Doctor. I loved her dubbing the Doctor a knight of Cardiff, though. ♥
Episode 4: School Reunion: Anthony Stewart Head! Eeeeeevil!Giles, with hair that made him look like Hannibal frigging Lecter. I admit, I squealed. But what really made the whole house squeal was Sarah Jane Smith. Particularly the Doctor's expression when he first saw her - he looked like he didn't know whether to burst out laughing with joy or to break down in tears. And K-9. So adorable. Evil-Giles-Headmaster-guy: "Bad dog." K-9: "Affirmative!" My favorite part, though? The Doctor's look of horror when he walked in on Rose and Sarah laughing about him. Ah... every man's nightmare. The whole thing was just sooooo cute.

And the look Doc gave Sarah Jane was really lovely. ♥ Now I want to rewatch all those episodes.

Date: 2007-06-08 10:27 pm (UTC)Yep, it is! And never let it be said that I'd pass up a chance to mention the three-degrees-of-separation that meant I once knew someone who knew him from years back (and refused to give me his phone number, the bitch). Also, on the subject of Scottish things, the 'township of Balamory' he claims to be from is a BBC in-joke: Balamory was a kids' TV show set in a fictional town where everyone, IIRC, sang all the damn time.
Anthony Stewart Head plays evil so very well, doesn't he? I loved that one!

Date: 2007-06-09 07:36 pm (UTC)That's delightful. All the cute little in-jokes... I'm always sad about the ones that hop right over my head.
He does, and it was adorable. We watched it again last night, as well as two (three? can't remember...) more new ones. Would've watched more, but we were all so tired from the week that we couldn't stay up any later.

Date: 2007-06-09 07:39 pm (UTC)That "No second chances," and the bit with Harriet Jones at the end of that episode - both were perfectly creepy and dark in the way I've come to expect from the Doctor. I still think of Dalek as the best moment for that - the scene toward the beginning between him and the captured Dalek is still one of my favorites of the whole series.
Yes! XD

Date: 2007-06-09 07:40 pm (UTC)We're getting some of the older stuff from the library, too - all of it that they have is on order, so hopefully we'll get some good watching out of that.
