Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] aris_tgd: Tell us what the name of your computer is (or your hard drive, whichever is more interesting) and how you chose that name.

Old laptop's name is Lennier (sweet, very eager, slightly hapless and ill-starred), which led to me naming my mp3 player Marcus (bright, enthusiastic and cheerful, with a sleek black look), and my work laptop Corwin (functional and hard-working, if occasionally dippy, and doesn't have much of a life outside the office ;) ). And then there's my PC/'main computer' - Susan. I originally meant the name in honor of Susan Ivanova, but it's become a three-way pun of sorts, referring also to Susan Sto Helit, Death's grand-daughter in the Discworld books, and to Susan Foreman, the Doctor's grand-daughter in Doctor Who. The confluence of which brings me to the conclusion that there's something in the name "Susan" that says to writers "I'm very cute, entirely too practical for my own good, I'm more than a bit dangerous, and I could probably kill you. Also, my family is terrifying." Or something like that.

...On this subject, my mp3 player decided this morning that he is feeling ill and doesn't want to work anymore. And no, I haven't hooked him up to my PC, lately. But he won't turn on, won't take a charge, won't recognize being plugged in... *Sigh* Looks like I'll be taking a trip up to Best Buy this weekend to see if my warranty is still good. :(

That's what you get for naming your mp3 player Marcus :)

Y'know, I thought of this when I named him. And then, like an idiot, I thought "nahhhh."

Clearly I need to be more careful about the naming of objects. On the other hand, what's a fictional name that wouldn't land me in some kind of trouble?

*Looks at your icon*

The Doctor - no matter how much trouble he gets in he just keeps coming back. Mind you he does get in a lot of trouble...

*Laughs* I suppose so, it's just the image of a computer that... hmm... jeopardy-friendly.

Of course, for this little mp3 player "Tardis" would be appropriate... tiny little brand with loads of space. ;)

Ooo I like it, I wish I had a tiny one with loads of space, then again I wish I had a TARDIS too ;)

I very much wish I had a Tardis. Particularly if it came with Time Lord included. ;)

Your icon... ah. That's my favorite scene of pretty much anything ever. ♥ Fantastic acting, there, and just so amazing.

Clearly, a great many readers were influenced by reading The Chronicles of Narnia as children. ;)

My computer is named Fawkes. Something about how it rose from the ashes of the old one which died, I don't remember now. It's a bit of a break in tradition, as I always named them things like HAL or AIVAS before. :)

I knew there was another! I missed Narnia for the most part, as a child (and by the time I hit it in my very early teens I was deeply suspicious of allegory... so unfortunately am unlikely to read it), but enough friends read and loved those books that I'm surprised I forgot to include her in my list. Susan is apparently just an awesome name. ;)

Fawkes is a nice name for a computer!

Aww sorry the MP3 is acting up....Marcus probably was a fateful name. You did however buy the 2 year extended warrenty though, so I'm pretty sure you're good to go!
If you'd like a ride, I can take you Sunday.
Just let me know.

It turned out to be fine - I guess the software gets fussy sometimes and needs a hard-restart. I had to get all the way there before it started behaving again, but I had other errands I had to run on Saturday anyway, so it turned out well. Thanks for the offer, though! ♥

While I'm catching up on recent posts and in a commenting mood:

I don't know what mp3 player you have, but I do know on the iPod if you hold menu and play, and then press the middle button, it's a reset command. Maybe there's a similar combination for your player. On the other hand, maybe I'm too late.

I have a Sansa Rhapsody, which somehow managed to reset itself randomly just as I got to the shop. It's got some kind of combination like that, though... I ought to look it up and take note. *g*

What awesome names and reasons!

Oh, the poor, ill-starred Marcus...

Yeah, poor Marcus. *Pouts* My Marcus, at least, is back in the world of the technologically-living, though. Like any piece of technology, all I had to do was take him to the shop and he immediately perked right up. ;)
