sabre-tooth cats, snow, and daleks
Jan. 28th, 2008 01:53 pmAnother would-be blockbuster bound to be ruined by a degree in anthropology and fascination with the realities of prehistory.
Seriously - 10,000 BC? I may or may not end up seeing it purely for the shiny (sabre-tooh cats! mammoths!), but... I might need either a muzzle or an audience willing to put up with a cackling prehistory buff "ruining" all the good parts with her hysterical laughter. Allow me to say that I have no idea what mammoths might have had to do with the building of... pyramids? o_O Um. As much as I love to talk about the brilliance of ancient humans, they weren't that good. We've never managed to domesticate mammoths. As a fantasy, this could be fun.... but it kind of wigs me that it's sort of being billed as at least semi-realistic. Which... just no.
Following the outline provided by my title, I have to say that it's snowing in Seattle today. Again. Our lake was frozen over yesterday, and for the first time in my life I learned that if you throw little rocks out onto an ice-covered lake they make a fantastic chittering noise. It was amazing.
After I finally burned out on writing yesterday (31,000 words and counting on the story!),
maymargaret and I ended up watching my new DVD of "Genesis of the Daleks." How had I forgotten that Harry Sullivan changes his whole outfit almost literally on-screen? No, seriously - I saw elbow, I swear. ♥ When do we get another awesome totally-chilled-out adorable dope of a male companion like him?

As far as dopey male companions, I think it may be a while. We've gone from 'The Doctor as a father/patron' in the old line to 'The Doctor as Single Alien Lookin' fa Luv', and that means your male companions are far more likely to be Captain Jack-like if you get them.

Date: 2008-01-28 10:17 pm (UTC)Yup, you hit the nail on the head. We get two kinds of male companions now - the kind who are entirely there to make the Doctor look good (Adam, Mickey) or the kind who are there... umm... because Russel Davies wanted to use Doctor Who as a launch pad for an original concept of his own. No complaints about Jack, myself, but... I think I preferred the Doctor when he didn't have to pick up companions on the basis of whether or not they'd make a good girlfriend for him. I'm hoping Donna is a sign of changes in that direction.
(And let me be clear - I'm not against there being romantic vibes between the Doctor and his companion. I'm a Doctor/Romana fan, for crying out loud, and I've been known to comment on the cute threesome-ness of Sarah/Doctor/Harry. But I don't like that to be the only thing it's about. That's boring.)

Date: 2008-01-29 01:51 am (UTC)And yeah... Talons is one of those episodes from what I've heard that was probably good in the 70s, but now... not so much. At some point we'll have to show you one of the two I bought on Friday - they're both adorable and very fun.
Thanks, you too! I hear it's supposed to snow more tonight... I hope I get home before it starts!
