perfume review - dee, and the steampunk edition

I have perfume!!!

The order this time was: Antikythera Mechanism, Dee, Belle Epoque, The Robotic Scarab, The Coil, and Violet Ray, and as freebies I got Uruk and Bluebeard.

Full reviews will come in time (assuming I remember) but for the moment I'll say that I love everything, that Bluebeard is weird and wonderful, and that Dee is flat-out unbelievable. I... may never be able to detach my nose from my wrist, now that I've tried it on. It's warm and leathery without being overpoweringly "Hi, I live in a Wilson's Leather store!" like Highwayman did to me, and the pipe tobacco sweetens it up in a really delicious way. I'm not getting much of the tea, but I'm not missing it, either. ;) windrose, when you said it was totally Giles, you were Not Wrong At All. ♥ It's scholarly but sexy, comfy and homey with a good dose of mystery and an almost subliminal hint of danger. I veeeeeeeery much love this one.

On my other wrist (yes, I'm two-timing), I've got Robotic Scarab, and it's definitely winning the "strangely fascinating" award, just like I thought it would. There's a lot of cinnamon, which I wasn't really expecting, and dryness with... kind of a smooth, slightly metallic undertone. Smooth and a bit distant, with a depth that I keep coming back to. If the leather and anise are there, they're delicate, but like how the whole thing comes together.

Looking forward to trying Antikythera Mechanism next - the teakwood and tobacco are really drawing me in, in the bottle. Oh, and The Coil is deliciously minty and complex, and so far Violet Ray is sweet without being cloying like my other violet perfume. All together, this order has very much lived up to my expectations!

I got Dee for a male friend of mine (the scent of leather doesn't do anything for me; Robotic Scarab is the one leather one I have), and he also raved quite a bit about it. Not saying it's a man smell, but it does seem to be a good one :D

Hrm. I need to set up another sale and clear out more imps.

Oh, it's pretty guy-ish, I just... can't resist it. Probably for that very reason, it's so evocative of my fantasy kind of guy. :P It's veeeeeery pretty, too, though.

Uruk is another personal favorite; I have a full 5ml of that one, though it's not going to be to everyone's taste. If you wind up not liking it, I will happily take the imp off your hands in exchange for something else in my collection.

Belle Epoque is a bit more floral and feminine than I usually like, but it smells like a perfume my mother used to wear, so I keep it in her honor.

I haven't tried Uruk on yet, but in the bottle it smells all wonderful and resin-y... can't wait to see how it turns out. But yes, if it turns out badly on me you can certainly have it!

Belle Epoque does have a very classic perfume scent, doesn't it? I wonder if it's the ambergris that gives it that quality... Again, haven't tried it on yet, but I hope it'll work. Most of my girly florals don't have a lot of staying-power, and Belle Epoque seems like it might be strong enough to break that trend.

Uruk is wonderful. On me, it smells like a hot desert night, full of incense and night-blooming flowers.

I hope you have luck with Belle Epoque. I find it very soft and delicate, but my skin tends to devour certain scents. I read these stories about blends that have a powerful throw and last for hours, but then when I try them, they just go POUF! Gotta love body chemistry!
