joss-stuff? nifty!
Jan. 22nd, 2009 01:26 pmIt is perhaps a bad thing that the instant I hear Joss Whedon is working on a new movie, my first thought is not "gee, I wonder what it's about," but rather "who are Tony Head, Nathan Fillion, Morena Baccarin, and That Guy Who Played Tracey playing?"
I will be genuinely disappointed if there is no one I know and love from Firefly, Buffy, et al in this new movie. I'm already sad that some other middle-aged guys I don't know have been cast. What the hell, Joss? We all trust you to use your same pool of actors over and over and over again! ...And, more importantly, Nathan Fillion relies on you for, y'know, getting a job every now and then!
...Am I the only person who thinks it's possible that Joss somehow accidentally curses all his actors? No? I wish I could say there wasn't evidence...

Date: 2009-01-22 09:54 pm (UTC)So, what you're saying is that I was right to look at the plot description on that one and think "not even Joss Whedon can make that not be a piece of sexist crap." Pity. I was kind of hoping desperately that I was being unfair in dismissing it out of hand...
That said, I was disappointed enough by the sexual politics in "Doctor Horrible" that Whedon's going to have to work pretty hard on his next project to get me un-pissed-off at him. :P I expect that kind of crap out of a lot of writers, but I'd learned to hope for better from Whedon. Too bad he seems to be un-learning that...

Date: 2009-01-22 10:24 pm (UTC)So I'm willing to give Dollhouse one more chance, even though the trailers, promos and leaked scripts that I've seen so far have just left me increasingly disappointed. Add that to my disappointent with Doctor Horrible and especially Season 8 and Joss is gonna have to work real hard to win me over again.

Yeah, that's what's so weird about it - with his race issues he's stuck to repeating the same damn mistakes, but his sexual politics have been actually getting worse.
I remember someone once saying that the problem with Joss is that he's obsessed with misogyny but as a male writer he doesn't realise that by showing it, he's actually adding to the misogynistic content in media. I think that does describe rather well the problem with things like the proposed rape of Inara in Firefly, or Eliza Dushku's character being used as a sexdoll.
