...And I have one more reason to Hate Dell.

Want to see their computer-marketing website aimed especially at women? No? Well, you should anyway. Because it's appalling.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go bake a pie and finish my boyfriend's laundry before I go to bed early so that I can make breakfast and pack him a healthy lunch. Or just drink a beer and wonder why Dell has to be so god damned stupid.

It was worse - much worse - before they changed the "tips" section and added to it. It's still offensive and talks down to women, but before they added detail, the assumption was that a woman wouldn't know that a smaller laptop would be easier to travel with, period, along with a whole bunch of other insulting insinuations.

Dell is known for marketing differently at different market segments. The best part is you can often just pick whichever marketing you want to deal with and go for it. Want to be a small business? Sure! Just go to the Dell-for-small-businesses website! Of course, then the tricky part is figuring out whether the pricing is better on that site or on the regular consumer website, since they don't actually carry quite the same products. It's what makes dealing with Dell so fun!

And, really, there are people out there (men and women) who really do need some things pointed out to them that we all thing of as obvious.

I'm guessing you're much closer to the target audience for their general consumer site than their for-women site, and that that's true for most of the women either of us know.

(Now, of course, I'm wondering if they'll come out with a "for men" website, rebranding the current one as "for geeks", so they'll be able to also market directly towards technophobic guys. "Keep in mind that the pop-out tray is for CDs; it is not a cup holder.")

You know... I did all of that last night. I mean, after getting home from my full time tech job. Although you'd have to replace "boyfriend" with "our".

I want a pastel netbook.

And I'm still not the target audience.

(On a side note: I actually, I went to the main Dell page and couldn't even find a link to get to the "laptops for women" section after looking around FOR it, so maybe they were smart and buried it.)
