and for tonight's entertainment...
Aug. 9th, 2009 09:55 pmThis evening, my fish tank broke.
Everybody (by which I mean not only the fish and the snails, but also the rest of the Boy, the cats, me, and the apartment) is fine, but it was really sort of scary. We're sitting there on the couch, about halfway through an episode of Buffy and a little dinner, and we hear a weird sort of "crack!" noise. We both look around. Nothing obvious seems to have fallen, hit anything, or done anything at all, so we shrug and return to dinner. A minute later the Boy glances in the direction of the fish-tank again and says something to the effect of "okay, that's bad." Which it was - there was water dripping (quite quickly, actually!) down the bookshelf that the tank is on top of.
Cue panic. We get a bucket under the leak, then a towel around the leak, then start siphoning the water out of the tank while I get the plastic plants and all out into our biggest saucepan. Once we have half the water out, I dunk the fish out with a cup and put them in the bucket, and the bucket in the bathtub, and shut the door. Drain the rest of the tank, get the rocks out (and the snails into the bucket with the fish), set up the filter in the bucket so that fishies will be okay until tomorrow evening because hey! it's a Sunday, and the pet stores all close early on Sundays, so we won't have a new tank until tomorrow night. But it'll be okay. We just, y'know, have to remember to keep the bathroom door closed until then. :P
(I wrote that, and immediately got up and made sure I'd closed the door behind me. Because, well, cats.)
Anyway, crisis averted... I'm just really glad that happened while we were home, and right there to see it. There must have been a really tiny crack, maybe from when we moved the tank and I put the rocks back in, and... I guess it just... grew? Suddenly? All very weird, anyway. Not the most relaxing end to the weekend, either.

Date: 2009-08-10 06:03 am (UTC)So yeah, mostly counting myself lucky right now. Also pleased that I don't have a bigger tank, 'cause that took a bit of work getting it drained fast like that.

Sorry about the panicked end to weekend though.
Have you heard from K?
That typhoon was pretty awful.
I sent her an e-mail through facebook.

Date: 2009-08-10 02:25 pm (UTC)Yeah, we talked on Friday night our time (Saturday her time) and she was mostly amused - she loves storms, like us. Plus, you know, pleased that her work was canceled.
