For US folks: Someone I'm not actually familiar with, and their encounter with the Canadian health system following a medical issue at WorldCon. Amazingly, they survived. /sarcasm.
Seriously, people - this nonsense about the "death panels" and all that shit just has to stop. Palin is a moron - if you're listening to her, you just plain need to check yourself into a mental hospital (and good luck with that, by the way). But more than that - these panels are for end of life counseling - helping elders choose how they want to handle all the superbly confusing decisions surrounding an inevitable biological process that has a lot of complexities in modern society. They are not some kind of gas chamber for the inconvenient. Don't let an asshat like Palin trick you - she's just as uneducated and clueless as she ever was, and she's spouting the same kind of idiocy as ever. And so is everyone else who's panicking about how "OH DEAR GOD, if we give healthcare to the poor, then there won't be enough for MEEEEEEEEE." Seriously, people, grow up.
Socialized medicine isn't perfect, but as far as I'm concerned it's vastly preferable to the fucked up system the US has now.

Date: 2009-08-13 11:35 am (UTC)As it is I really wish I could reach across the border and shake some people. REALLY hard. Especially the people acting like "OMG if we go down this road we are lost! Death panels! No one will know what they're doing!"
Because, you know, it's not like the rest of the developed world (Canada, the UK, most of Europe) etc has had government run healthcare for decades or anything like that. *head desk*
But all the misinformation is terrible. We had a similar situation last fall when our minority government was facing a non-confidence vote and the other 3 parties were thinking of forming a coalition government. The party currently in power started a campaign telling everyone how this was "unConstitutional" and "un-Canadian" when in fact it was about as constitutional and democratic a situation as you can get. It was fear-mongering and mis-information plain and simple.
