For US folks: Someone I'm not actually familiar with, and their encounter with the Canadian health system following a medical issue at WorldCon. Amazingly, they survived. /sarcasm.

Seriously, people - this nonsense about the "death panels" and all that shit just has to stop. Palin is a moron - if you're listening to her, you just plain need to check yourself into a mental hospital (and good luck with that, by the way). But more than that - these panels are for end of life counseling - helping elders choose how they want to handle all the superbly confusing decisions surrounding an inevitable biological process that has a lot of complexities in modern society. They are not some kind of gas chamber for the inconvenient. Don't let an asshat like Palin trick you - she's just as uneducated and clueless as she ever was, and she's spouting the same kind of idiocy as ever. And so is everyone else who's panicking about how "OH DEAR GOD, if we give healthcare to the poor, then there won't be enough for MEEEEEEEEE." Seriously, people, grow up.

Socialized medicine isn't perfect, but as far as I'm concerned it's vastly preferable to the fucked up system the US has now.

These recent discussions I've seen on the topic have pretty much left me... O_O ...at a lack of words. Our new government has been driving down our socialiced health care for the past few years, and I want nothing better than to have it all back.

If it weren't health care (and thus, you know, peoples' quality of life) that was the issue watching all the screaming and yelling and the sheer WTF-ness of what some people (like Palin) are saying would be really funny.

As it is I really wish I could reach across the border and shake some people. REALLY hard. Especially the people acting like "OMG if we go down this road we are lost! Death panels! No one will know what they're doing!"

Because, you know, it's not like the rest of the developed world (Canada, the UK, most of Europe) etc has had government run healthcare for decades or anything like that. *head desk*

But all the misinformation is terrible. We had a similar situation last fall when our minority government was facing a non-confidence vote and the other 3 parties were thinking of forming a coalition government. The party currently in power started a campaign telling everyone how this was "unConstitutional" and "un-Canadian" when in fact it was about as constitutional and democratic a situation as you can get. It was fear-mongering and mis-information plain and simple.

It's beyond absurd the way things are being twisted. My favorite is still the editorial stating that if Stephen Hawking were subject to the NHS, he would have been left to die. Um, fact-checking much? Also, it's the reason he's around. My friend who's a UK med student is boiling over the stuff being said about the NHS, even more than the rest of my UK friends.

BTW, I posted about all the health care crazy on my political filter a day or so back. If you want me to add you to the filter, just shout! No pressure either way :)

Yeah, that whole thing just kills me. It's so stupid! It's just a lot of idiotic fear-mongering, but the fact that it works on some people around here just makes me want to cry.

Please do! I can't promise I'll reply a lot, because oftentimes I just get so upset with politics that I stop being able to comment coherently, but I do like to keep up on things, and read what other people have to say about it.

No worries. Participation not required--and if you get tired of my rantings ramblings for whatever reason, just say the word and I'll take you off the filter. :)

Oh, God, all this "death panel" business is making me violently ill. I'm a Canadian, and, look, our system isn't perfect, we'd all be the first to pipe up and admit it, but am I, and is my country, a hell of a lot better off for it? Good God: yep.
