You did it! I had to laugh at the toilet story - we have the same things in Korea, if the toilet is Western-style, all I can say is do not push the button that looks like a sprayer. It is not the flush button.
You can totally do the money thing. It takes some getting-used-to, but once you get it, you'll be fine. And the pointing-to-things and miming is a perfectly acceptable manner of ordering in a restaurant. Most restaurants in Asia are used to goofy foreigners.
