Snagged from fellow-skeptic [livejournal.com profile] seachanges: How skeptics know the world is not going to end because of some supposed Mayan calendar in 2012. AKA actual real information on the subject, with primary sources and everything! ♥

I'm sure actual Mayans aren't at all offended by this misuse of their mythology.

Yeeeeeeeah. Oh, people. Why can't they consider the fact that these are real people who probably won't like having their culture co-opted by a bunch of morons to cause havoc and sell idiotic books?

The National Geographic site has a similar debunking. It further goes on to say that the 2012 thing is, in the Mayan calendar, no more monumental than a new year, decade, or century is to any calendar. It's just the start of another time cycle.

People are so dumm.

Exactly. It's the end of a calendar cycle, not the end of the freaking world. Of course, people are too stupid to notice the difference in our calendar system, too - look at the whole ton of people who insisted the world was going to end in 2000. *Sighs*

And add to the double-annoyance of the people who thought we'd end at 2000 was that year 1 itself was pretty much just arbitrary, because nobody really knows when Jesus was born (assuming he actually existed as a historical figure). Does the majority of our species just actively choose to not think, or is just an American/European/Christian thing?
