I've only read the first... two? Um. The last one I read was whichever was set in China, how about that? And it was pretty darned good, if slightly slow. But I adored the first book with a flaming passion.
The China one was... a bit weird. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't remotely what I was expecting. The series picks up quite a bit again with the third book, though.
I loved the first one, liked the second well enough, thought the third was boring as hell, and the fourth had me actively banging my head against a wall. I gave up after that and won't read any of the others.
Loved the first one, second was okay, haven't got around to reading any more. Unless the one in China was the third, in which case I've read three. I got a little confused somewhere in there, I think.
Even though I was less than enthused by books after the first, though, I think the movie idea has potential. For one thing, pretty! And for another thing, PJ & Fran & Philippa are good at writing movies. I have a feeling they'd do well at cropping the books down to the good bits. :)
I will be over the freaking moon if it ever gets made, because I adore that series. And please, PJ, please don't cast Russell Crowe as Laurence. There were some rumors to that effect a while back, and I will be fine as long as Crowe isn't Laurence. Or anyone else.
Crowe's too old at this point. I think Lawrence is early thirties or so?
I'm not familiar with a lot of actors, but the first person that came to mind was Jack Davenport (Norrington in the PotC movies). Largely because the role is similar, but that's kind of the point - he's already shown that he's capable of acting within the entire range of Laurence's development over the course of the series...
Crowe is definitely too old. That's part of the reason I don't like the idea of him playing Laurence. The other is that he's already done Master and Commander, and it would just be ridiculous.
Jack Davenport is actually my dream casting. I love him in POTC, obviously, and he was such a dork in Swingtown that I can see him nailing the part of Laurence that freaks out over the women aviators and all the things they encounter in China.
God, yes. Jack Davenport = one of my favorite actors. Love, love, love that man. (Have you seen Ultraviolet? Not the movie (dear god, not the movie) but the British tv show from the 90s, with him and Susannah Harker and Phillip Quast and several other awesome people in it? It's brilliant, and he's such a squishy adorable thing in it. ♥
Ahem. Anyway. He'd be perfect for Laurence.
...And I'm not just saying that because I hate Russell Crowe, either. :P
