doctor who - hungry earth
May. 25th, 2010 08:49 amI was going to say "I promise I'll post something that isn't about the kitty soon!" when I realized that I do have something non-kitty to talk about.
Straight from the get-go, this episode reminded me of one of the Third or maybe Fourth Doctor's adventures - overweening scientists drilling into the earth for no apparent reason ("Infection?" Is that you...?), Doctor and companions splitting up, one of the companions getting captured almost immediately, the other one getting involved with the locals... But of course it's better than that, because it has Meera Syal! Who I know from... something, I cannot remember what, but I have a great deal of affection for her, whatever it was. I get the sense she's in some of the audios I listen to. And her character is quite adorable! Honestly, partway through the episode I started begging Moffat to leave Amy behind and let us take Nasreen instead. Or as well as. Whatever. But I like Nasreen, and I miss having an older woman around whose relationship with the Doctor is not at all romantic and not nearly as awe-filled as Amy's is, and an awesome scientist lady would fill that position nicely.
Anyway.
Amy and Rory have finally gotten past their angsty woe-begotten jealousy over the Doctor stupid issues and have arrived at "cute, charming couple," and I like them, though I would still point out that with all their "We're still together in ten years, gasp!" and "But you like the Doctor better!" and all that, they are clearly not ready for marriage. :P Rory is really growing on me, though, as he begins to... you know... develop a personality apart from "pathetic jealous boyfriend." Thank goodness. And he remembered that he's a nurse in this episode! Yay!
More importantly... Silurians. I have to admit, I squeed a little. The makeup was actually nice, which is something previously unheard-of in New Who (or Old Who, for that matter), and I liked that we pulled out some references to the classic episodes. It reminded me a lot of Five's episode with the Sea Devils after that point - certainly Eleven in a situation like this is more Five than Three. Loved the conversation where Alayah (or however they want to spell it) tries to claim she's the last of her species (apparently that's an accepted move in interrogation situations, good to know - wonder if it will come up later when the Doctor somehow gets captured by some big bad?) and the Doctor smacks her down. Eleven is very good about getting briefly angry or upset about something, and then moving on. Bless Ten, but I could just kiss Eleven for being that way. After four years of Mister WHINE ANGST WHINE ANGST WOE IS ME LISTEN TO ME BITCH ENDLESSLY, it's really nice to have a Doctor who's like "Damn it, I lost Amy! Damn! Damn!!! Okay, let's deal with the situation and get her back." Is it possible the Doctor's actually growing up a little? *Gasp*
Good episode, very classic-inspired, very much a return to roots in all the good ways. And so far they haven't played Kill the Minority Character, or Vilify the Older Woman Character OR the Mother Character! ♥ (If this were still RTD, I would be placing bets that the boy's mother will turn out to be the one to kill someone. Foreshadowing the old guy, and then a last-minute turn around that the woman does it. I hope Moffat has a bit more sense.)

Date: 2010-05-25 09:52 pm (UTC)I don't understand why Amy and Rory absolutely have to get married just yet. I mean, she's 21, for crying out loud; can't they just date for a few more years? I guess it's more of the marriage obsession of New Who writers.
