gravediggers from outer space!
Mar. 19th, 2004 09:13 pmFinally got to see Ed Wood tonight - I've been wanting to see it since the halflings and I watched Plan Nine from Outer Space last year for Halloween, and it's totally fabulous!
Martin Landau is wonderfully tragic as the aging, washed-up Bela Lugosi, Sarah Jessica Parker does a marvelous job as Wood's girlfriend Dolores, and Johnny Depp is just plain spectacular as Ed Wood. He's so goofily earnest and optimistic and just plain... shiny! He's got this puppy-like, glowy, wide-eyed "my dream is coming true" look that just breaks your heart. The man is a genius. And all the kooky, crack-pot crappy-ness of Plan Nine comes shining through in every detail of the moments when he's filming that. My only complaint (if you can call it that) is that I'll never again be able to watch the first part of that dreadful movie without feeling sad - the tragedy of Bela Lugosi's "last movie" really gets to me, now, and that scene with the flower outside the house really seems to capture everything, in a way.
Anyway, next on my list is Edward Scissorhands... although seeing how long it took me to get to this movie, it might take a while.
Happy Spring Equinox tomorrow, everyone - I'm going to go hiking to celebrate the day. ♥
